Ben seems like a good man who thinks he has to shoulder the burden all alone. He's going to end up working himself to death if he doesn't step back and ask for help. Pride is a awful thing sometimes

I mean thing is, its not really pride. Both OP and Ben’s younger sibling are busy with school. Also it is an objective fact that by mixing work and school one of the two will surfer. So it makes sense that Ben shoulders the burden alone.

@@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd No it doesn't make sense for one person to shoulder the burden of three. People work and attend school all the time without a problem. Yes, they probably shouldn't get full-time jobs if they're serious abou their education, but there are a number of part-time jobs they can get.

@@magic8ball1982 You are right people go part time and even I have seen this and I can tell you that people who have gone to school and done work have lower grades then those that can somehow afford to solely focus on schools.
So given OP is in a master’s program (which are extremely strict) and Ben’s brother has a full ride (which are also strict) it makes sense why Ben is taking the burden.
Now I do not agree that is how things should be. However, that is more pointing to the issue within the higher education system and less on Ben himself. All Ben is doing is making sure his brother and GF can finish their respective programs

I can relate to Ben. We men have been told from birth we are to man up and take care of everything. If a man shows any feeling that aren't "manly" we're treated less than a human. We can not brake, show weakness or cry. It sucks but as a man myself I want to say I'm here for all the "Bens" out there. We can do this together.

Sorry you feel that way. My experience has been that the women in my life have been the biggest advocates for my mental health, both offering support directly, and encouraging professional treatment. What I hear from my sisters, ex-girlfriends, and many women friends (and so many women on the internet its basically a meme at this point) is that they emphatically, desperately even, want men to go to therapy, address trauma, anxiety, depression etc..., and develop healthy coping and communication skills. Modern women seem to emphatically want us to be emotionally open and pursuing mental wellness, to the point where I see it noted in dating profiles.
The "men suffering in silence" thing is something largely self-imposed these days in the West, and only other men have ever made me feel less-than for talking about my feelings or seeking help. There are a bunch of shifts in society men are dealing with that lead us to be more isolated and have thinner support networks, accompanied by, and sometimes resulting from, economic displacement and stagnation-this is a really serious issue we have to tackle at a society level. That said, we men have to recognize our own part in perpetuating "boys don't cry", not seeking treatment, and not nurturing deeper supportive relationships with other men (as women do with their friends).
Go ahead, cry, it's fine. Then man up and go to therapy or your pastor or your brother or bar tender or partner, and talk it out.

@xiahoupaul19 see here's my view: I absolutely want a leader and a provider for me and my family. That is 100% what I want and what I have. The thing is, we also have mutual respect for each other. He listens to me and I him. We talk to each other and love each other. He is my soulmate and I'll follow where he leads, and I'll do my best to love and protect him from his demons.
A man with high emotional intelligence is very sexy to me, and a man that trusts me so much to feel safe enough to cry or be vulnerable, I'm honored. I know how men are treated. I love him, why would I leave just because he chose to show me that side of himself? It made him more beautiful. He literally cried with me when my mom died. Just held me and cried. I've never felt so safe and loved in my entire life. I hope those women pull their heads out of their ass cause once a good man shows you this, and you love him and accept him, he'll stay with you. Note: I said GOOD man.

As for the second story: I know a friend who is similar to Ben he's not at all good looking or doesn't have any impressive talent but he's a super sweet guy. The kinda guy who would say sorry even if it wasn't his fault just to de-escalate the situation!
And as a friend who knows him from KG.. the reason for him being like this was the fact that he was mostly a lonely person! He wasn't terrible at studies but wasn't exactly a genius, wasn't physically strong, didn't have a good sense of humour... So he never made friends ever.. i even remember him telling me how he sat alone during recess and eating his own food watching the trees move with the wind out of his school window!
His parents were both working but dad was alcoholic and egoistic and only earned for himself soo most of the time he was alone in his home and never had much of a family time either! His mom used to work 10-12 hour shifts excluding 2hrs of commute time... So whenever she came home from work she would be in a bad mood and would burst out her anger on him and he couldn't say a word because he understood that opening up means escalating the situation further! There was no way he could ever win an argument with his mom, dad or his uncles and aunts!
This kinda life made him the person similar to Ben and he did for exhausted to a point he passed out and was hospitalized for a week!
Because he actually dropped out of college after just 1 semester without telling anyone but me and started working a job to save enough to move out!
I know all this because of some voice notes and typed notes he had in his phone which i accidentally came across when he was hospitalized.
So i think ben must have had similar experiences in his childhood!

I think the same thing happened to me as OP in story 1. My mom left when i was 2 & my dad raised me. My mom was only in my life here & there but after she was in an almost fatal accident & went on disability after, once or twice at a younger age, she had me sign checks. I was too young to understand. Years later as i was older & had a child i got called about a bank account i nevrr knew i had. Upon asking her about it, she claimed she used to have an account under my name but never mentioned why. As i got older & thought about it, I'm pretty sure i was also getting checks under her disability & she never told me & kept it. I think she was probably getting them direct deposited so she didn't have to have my signature & probably had herself on the account as well. It's just a theory but by all the other things she did to me as a child i believe I'm right. Examples are when i was very young, she'd have a day on a weekend set up to come & get me for the night & never showed. I remember my dad dressing me up, putting pigtails in my hair, the whole 9 yards. I found out later that she had been at a bar all night instead. When i was a teenager & she'd promise to come get me for a weekend, she'd call at the last minute to cancel aith some excuse about being stuck out of town. I'd later that night see her driving down the road snd at bars, many other things. Thank god my dad loved me so much. Anyways, I'm pretty sure she did that to me for years. I've never confronted her about it & we barely speak now.

Edit: I forgot to mention about how I came to this conclusion. I never knew much about disability until not too long ago, my husband passed away in a motorcycle accident. He had 2 children from before that were under 18. This is when I learned more about disability & learned about dependants disability. I wish it wasn't so many years ago & I also wonder if there's any way I can find out the truth. It was her disability, but if I did receive some kind of dependent money, would I be able to find that out?

Story 2: why it's toxic masculinity when he is literally carrying to full grown adults. He's taking care of everything and wonder why he's acting like he is. Y'all need to grow up and get a job. It's pathetic to try and be mean him for going above and beyond.😤

Story 2 I'm pretty sure OP is in a job unless they haven't mentioned anything about quitting, or being let go from, the job because of the pandemic. so there is a chance that her boyfriend is using both paychecks of hos jobs and her job. as for her boyfriend's brother yes he would need to get a job.

Second sorry I get where she’s coming from but I don’t like how she said toxic masculinity. Makes it seem like she’s tryna find an excuse to be mad at him, but With what he’s going through can’t be expressed by words atm to him. That’s basically asking an animal how there feeling you not finna get a response. He himself just can’t physically talk about it specially when he’s not trying to get anyone involved or to worried

How did we survive with daycare assistance the only form of welfare I received as a single teen mom? They hand it out so easily that a mom and an adult daughter can fight over it. Wow. No wonder the country is in massive debt and is going down the shtter.

Story 1: The mother was a physically, emotionally, and financially abusive bitch.
Story 2: Ben is being, well, a man. He needs to find a way (possibly a manly way) to relieve his strength. Because sooner or later they will in the worse way possible.
