Rivals Workshop Contest: Winner Revealed!

- Last year we kicked off a contest for players to create their own original characters for the Rivals 1 Workshop, with the winner being chosen to eventually become a full-fledged character in Rivals 2. Today, on the one year anniversary of the contest, we're revealing the winner and 4 runner-ups!
We were incredibly impressed with the over 80 submissions we received featuring creators' own fun and well-thought-out characters. We could clearly see the love that went into them and want to thank everyone who entered. Make sure to try them yourself by downloading them for free on Steam: steamcommunity...

Let's not forget about the other creators who did an amazing job with their characters. If a single winner was hard to pick, this is probably also true for "only 4" honorable mentions.
Big shoutout to the workshop community and every single contestant, you guys are the best
And by the way, know that the door will always be open if you want to add Helios to the official Aether universe at any point in the future, that old man isn't going anywhere ;p

big grappler winning in another fighting game genuinely makes me so concerned for the future of this community. who are we anymore? what do we really represent? how am i supposed to exist in a game where someone can win neutral once and win the entire game? how is that fun? there is like zero counterplay to it and in everyone way that matters, it ruins the game.

@@DaPurpleSharpiegrapplers tend to be the worst archetype in a fighting game, now imagine them in a platform fighter game. Their whole point is working their way trough to land big damage on you, literally the counterplay to them is to keep them away from you
I played this character and thought there was no way she get added. She has like 7 command grabs.
I suppose maybe they'd have to be less commandy
Tbh she's cool but I liked every other charachter in the honorable mentions over her she's really grabby and the chair barely gets function, her off stage stage creation is cool tho
They'll probably tweak the moveset, but Rivals 2 is pretty moveset heavy anyway.
Not only that, but she's broken. Can't wait for La Reina vs. La Reina in GF
@@unlimited3680I honestly wanted to see the other character that uses a chair and actually uses it in the moveset a bit. Would've needed a lot of limitations to what he could do though, because I have seen an intended way to instakill as him.

im on pretty good terms with the winning entrant's developers. they are some of the sweetest people youll ever speak with and i think they deserve this so much. im so happy for them!

FUCKING SAME. I AM SO BEYOND HYPED DUDE. it sounds really stupid but my usual criteria for if im interested in a platform fighter is "is there someone who plays like incineroar"? and unfortunately the answer is usually no. BUT RIVALS 2 HAS FUCKING PULLED THROUGH BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Because of 3d models generally being harder than 2d sprites, the modding scene for roa1 will probably always be bigger than roa2. I'm hoping I wrong, but that's my guess

@@azeTrom17 AI still struggles to put together 2d pixels on a stationary canvas. Look at any 2d animation and you will be horrified by the results. Now increase that horror to a third dimension.
Gotta say, it's cool when a game company actually cares about their community to the point that they will add their community's characters into their games. This is only possible with indie companies.

I was planning to join this contest withan OC I worked on a while back who just so happens to be another luchador grappler (Avuelo). Seeing La Reina made me realize this is the character I wanted to win. So glad for it! Congrats!
Hopefully Helios and Awatsu get reconsidered because I think they fit the style so well.

La Reina was definitely my favorite, such a unique style of grappling moves not often seen in platform fighters

She's both an ant (an underrepresented anthro species) AND a grappler (an underrepresented archetype in platform fighters). So it's a double win for me! We desperately need more grapplers in Platform Fighters, so it's great to see more!
She looks like she would easily fit in Bug Fables and I love that.

wow this looks sick. i was already hyped for this game. but to see this roster fill out is just adding to the excitement. and i love fan made characters. i hope this game gets a few more swordie style characters and i hope those honorable mentions become characters one day as well. they looked very impressive. and i could see myself playing some of those. especially that staff weilder and the dudes who looks like he belongs with maypul

Knowing the trend of grapplers in fighting games, she'll be incredibly fun to play as, her personality will be very sweet and lovely, the people who play as her will all be very lovely and everybody else will hate them.
As an Incineroar player, I can relate (nobody really hates me but when we play I see their sould leaving their eyes every time they get alolan whipped)

La Reina is super fun! If anyone's not tried her out from the workshop, go do so! She plays alot like Beowulf from Skullgirls, meaning she doesn't have to wait her turn to kill you.

Glub was my pick (I'm a sucker for funny little guys and I loved his moveset) but congratulations to the winner! I'll have to try out La Reina on the workshop because I'm a sucker for grapplers, if she's anything like Incineroar then I know I'll have a great time. Very excited to see her in Rivals 2; I love the character's design, the prospect of a grappling female luchador ant is sick!
Man I was so hyped when I saw the Kragg trailer because I LOVE Grappler-style combat and it was so cool to see Kragg get some grappling moves, now I'll have ANOTHER character to play as! And SHE gets to throw a CHAIR!!!

I doubt I'll ever pick this game up, I'm not huge on more competitive platform fighters like this, but I was very disappointed when I saw that I could have played as a mailman. But then I saw who we got and I'm like "Yeah, this works too."

His rail grinding gimmick is much better than half the gimmicks in base Rivals characters. (Foresburn/Eliana steam smoke boring af imo)
I'm a King main since Tekken 3. So I'm exstatic to see a real honest to god grappler in a fighting game. And chair movement makes her so fucking fun to get in. But I hope Bhadra makes it in somehow, he was my second pick.
Maybe Dan will incorperate his rail grinding into his own character. I'd be satisfied with that.
