    Just finished a four tote system for my suburban home. Your videos made the build out go very smooth. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time.

    I'm watching these videos again because I am getting ready to work on my rain collection system and I wanted to steal your second flush idea. I am blown away by how much your yard has changed in less than a year. Remember when you were thinking about getting a pool? I think you made the right choice. Your garden looks great now and will feed your family forever. P.S. L.O.C. ROCKS!!!!!! I have never found a better organic cleaner.

    Thanks for the info on all of your topics. I used your set up as guideline for mine as many people have done. I still have a filter problem to work out as my tanks are about 2 inches below the gutter line. I do have the first flush installed too. I have my two tanks stacked in my garage and have had them full for months with no issues. Thank you again for the time and effort you put into sharing this.

    i live in southern WV, we get cold (-25) nights in Jan but normally around 0-20 most winter nights, i have not have my bust, the water does freeze inside of them, also make sure they are in direct sunlight during most of the day. I hope that helps! cheers -SirJustyn

    Thanks LDS Prepper. My entertainment during the winter was to scour youtube for rainwater reclamation systems. Your 8 part video really got me started. We just installed our first two IBC's this afternoon...on our way to six. Your tip about stretching the black plastic around the top opening is very cool. Thanks again. I have found every one of your posts (I have watched) to be helpful and encouraging.

    Actually, here in Texas, you paint them a dark color to block out the sun, then paint them white again to keep the water cool. You don't want 100+ degree water sprayed on you plants.

    Thanks for this video series!! I just completed a 2 container setup very similar to yours, but just used one three inch flush tube. I have a T above that flush tube, and have window screen keeping any junk from getting in the containers, so it falls into the flush tube. I would not have been able to complete this project without your instructions here!! Here is a link to pictures of my setup. Hopefully this will save on our water bill which has been 100 per month lately.

    Love your channel and ALL your videos!! You have inspired me to start the MGM and also install a RCS below my deck this summer during a replacement. My question deal with capacity and how many IBCs I should design for. We are a family of 6 so I plan for a gallon/person a day for preparedness, but I am not sure how many gallons per day are needed per 4x20 grow box if I am using the same source for collection and irrigation. Thanks again and KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING!!!

    LDSPrepper, thanks for your videos. I've learned a lot and they are great because I can re-play them to recall what I've forgotten.
    I was looking through the comments to see what you and others were saying about the possibility of freezing and PVC pipes bursting, etc. because I live in Northern Utah. Seems like it would be a pain to have to drain/disconnect each fall. Now that you have been at it for awhile, do you or others have further thoughts on the "freezing" issue? Is it even an issue?
    Please respond soon!

    Could you do a vid on how to open the bottom valve on the tote? After having purchased one to start my water collection system, I don't want to destroy the valve trying to remove the small metal plate under the plastic cover. I don't know if it pops , pryes, or unscrews off of there. I think the tote was emptied with a pump from the top with the valve never opened and it held cooking oil. There is approx 2 gal oil left in the tote and I need to get the valve open before the rainy season ends.

    LDS Prepper, I love you Rainwater Collection System. I was wondering if there is any triangle with a number inside it on them anywhere to signify if the plastic is BPA Free. Hoping it has one of those on it somewhere and it's a safe plastic that won't leach chemicals into the water. Thanks! Great ideas! We are going to be ordering our Berkey Water System in a few days. Thanks to your comparison water filtration systems video as that made the decision easy on which system to buy. We had well water and our city just decided to chlorinate and I can smell and taste the chlorine. No way do we want to drink it! I am thinking we should get the 6 gallon Berkey, as we'll probably use that much in cooking and drinking for a family of 4, but I am concerned about size. Which size Berkey do you have?

  • @LDSPrepper
    @LDSPrepper  12 років тому

    If that is the case with the totes you have I'd use different ones. All the totes I have seen are made to stack three high while full. It is a lot of weight but they are designed to hold that weight so it is no problem.

  • @LDSPrepper
    @LDSPrepper  13 років тому

    @pkbjorn35 Great question. You can store water in the sun as long as the sun doesn't get into the water. That will cause algae. By covering it with black plastic we avoid that problem.

    Yes, some states do regulate rainwater capture. I just read an article last week where a man is spending a few months in jail for that in Utah. My totes are out of site from the street so it doesn't look like I'm storing chemicals.

    Hi LDSPrepper, thank you for your fantastic videos. I have two questions for you...all the way around my house is roughly 57 inches from the house to the fence. Given that the totes are 48 inches in depth, do you think it can work? After watching your videos, I think it will, but I haven’t seen them placed in front of the wall. Can two people lift them up? How much do they weigh when empty ? 275 gallon? 330 gallon?

    I installed your system 2+ years ago. Posted on various FB pages. Thought I'd ask.
    RAINWATER ... and parasites. How to treat? Flush? .... I found two (2) short (1/2-inch), active, RED-dish worms in a rainwater collection system. Didn't take a picture but they look more or less like below but were shorter, possibly indicating a new infestation. It is summer so hotter. Still, have never noticed before.
    I installed the system in 2019 and have never flushed it. These are 2X 275 gal IBC's wrapped in black plastic. There are 2 unconnected sets like this. (550x2) In 2019-2020 I used the water for cooking for an entire year, no problems.
    I've been watering animals from this system for several years, and I look each day when flushing out a 5 gal food-grade bucket to water animals. I've never before seen the worms but have never seen any ill effects. Today I flushed the bucket 2X and still found parasites each time. I watered using city tap water today.
    QUESTIONS:
    1) Do I dump and treat the whole every 6 months?
    2) Do I take out 5, 10, or 50 gals, treat and then consume for a day, or week, keeping several systems, one treated, one being treated?

  • @Chimonger1
    @Chimonger1 4 роки тому

    How many totes can stack vertically?
    Seems like it would be wise to put even the totes, up on blocks or a concrete pad, as a footing, because the concentrated weight of a stack of totes full of water, can sink into the ground unevenly, destabilizing the stack, and possibly make the bottom spigot unusable, over time.

  • @LDSPrepper
    @LDSPrepper  12 років тому

    I guess it depends on how much water you start with and how much you can capture when it rains. Typically it rains 4" a month here in Houston. In the drought it rained on average 1" a month. I can capture over 1,600 gallons of water with just 1" of rain. We never ran out of water during the drought using this system.

    @moparmanpete Almost a ton a piece. I was very aware of the weight issue when I first started researching. I have seen many stacked tote videos and they all work great. I am putting mine on cinder blocks to disperse the weight on the ground.

After watching these videos we found someone selling the tanks and bought two to start, then talked to a friend and found out in our state (UT) they made it Legal to harvest rainwater in 2010, but restricted it to only two 100 gallon above ground storage containers (and one 2500 below ground storage).

    If you are in a drought, then you don't have rain water enough to fill much. I know because I was raised in Nebraska & South Dakota where we had cysterns and water must be hauled in to fill them much of the time. And water has to be hauled in even when rainfall is normal.
