Did the same idea with a 30 gallon barrel and used it at the garden shed to water the garden. Made a fertilizer mix with some fresh cow manure in a burlap bag in the barrel. Added a spigot at the side of the barrel and hooked up a soaker hose to feed the garden. Added a piece of sewer and drain pipe which I attached to inside the top for the gutter downspout Added a tee at the top for overflow and put a 4 inch plastic ball in the pipe to use as a stopper so the barrel would not leak out the top. Once it floated to the top it sent the flow out the overflow pipe without letting any of the manure tea out. Went out three times a week to soak the garden. Great garden for the last 6 years.

Awesome info Don!! I ordered my water barrels from Sportsman's Guide. They are used Pickel Barrels so they have a slight smell. I also have several of the food grade removable top barrels, but they get used for silo corn purchases. A couple of things, and I think you mentioned it, are the overflow pvc can be run into a second or even third barrel placed next to the original giving more than 100 gallons of water catchment. The other thing is that my father ran a pvc pipe off of his central air conditioner outside unit and down hill to a fifty gallon catchment and it stays full of clean, pulled out of the air, water. He just uses it for watering the plants, but it can be used in an emergency if needed. Personally, I need to capture the water from my dehumidifier I have in my out building. Again, clean water from the air. Thanks for the info and how too.
You would be surprised how dirty the condensate water is from air conditioner units. It is condensate from the air and the evaporator coil, but hvac condensate pans usually have that nasty pinkish colored slime. Nasty stuff.
I purchased a 50 gallon rain barrel from amazon. It comes with the top filter (30 second assembly required) and the spigot. I also pruchased a screen to cover the top and sides. As a extra safety measure I purchased mosquito screen mesh and covered the top of the barrel (2 layers of protection). Then I cut smaller pieces of the mosquito mesh and placed it over the top and end of the drainage pipe. I will pre-treat this water and use a life straw to drink it with.
Have 2 rain collection systems, by the house with a rainwater diverter. By the garden hooked to the downspout. Put them in for watering plants, but nice having the extra water for emergencies. Thanks for sharing!
gravity feed is good. However, you can also add in a small submersible pump powered by a 12 volt battery (recommend solar rechargeable for sustainability) this will also enable you to connect longer hoses to it if you want to move water to places like your garden. you wont get high pressure but its effective for this purpose.
Suggestion: flex gutter extensions- allows for you to set downspout to the side for the first few minutes of rain (let debris runoff to the side) , then put downspout on intake screen
I install irrigation systems for a living. You cannot have pressure going two different directions in the same pipe It’s amazing how much better it works after he hooks the pump up
Love this. It's simple enough. Ty! *If I'm going to drink it, I think I'd like it coming off a steel roof though, to avoid chemicals from other roofing materials.
Good advice on never drinking that water without extreme filtering and treatment. Birds and other animals poop on the roof and all that stuff filters down with that water. Also bacteria, protozoa, and larvae will start growing in that water. Filter and treat it if you have to use it. Also make sure it is sealed from mosquitos so you don't create a larva pit.
Exactly. Bird poo is one thing, and microorganisms will breed in that water. But there are other problems. Roofs are made of different materials, and every roof is in a different stage of decomposition. Thus, microscopic roof particles will also end in that water. Furthermore, some people regularly treat their roof with chemicals to prolong its lifespan. Home water filters are not designed for water like that. The filter will be contaminated and clogged with microorganisms and other particles. Microorganisms will keep on multiplying in the filter, some may pass through it or their by products. I recommend gloves when cutting sheet metal. One inopportune slip and instead of working on rain catchment, you're sitting in an ER waiting for stitches.
How about adding a hose to spigot and running the hose into the house and then add a small pump to be able to fill bottles inside dwelling? If so, what kind of pump would you suggest?
Sadly their website says the barrel superstore is closed due to the recession. There are other options for parts. Rural King has used food grade barrels if you're in driving distance to one of those stores. I'm trying to figure out how best to get water off a shed.
When that fills up the water will then just pour down into the foundation of the building? You need a diverter to switch over to a corrugated pipe or downspout and get that water out away from the building. Is there a basement here? Do you have a sump pump? It’s gonna be working overtime to evacuate that ground water.
Good to know. I wasnt aware of that. The chemicals already in our drinking water are not good either. May be worse than the chemicals from a roof.....🤔 Will only use it for drinking water in extreme situations and I will add some holy water.

Make sure the flow rate from the spigot is decent. Some pre made store brand barrels dribble.
Great video! Thanks for the information.
Nice, I Like To Buy Two Barrels.
raise the barrel up on cinder blocks...would be much easier to get the water to flow out...
Drop a (real) silver dollar in the barrel. It'll prevent bacterial growth.
Even if birds poop in it?
I recommend gloves when cutting sheet metal. One inopportune slip and instead of working on rain catchment, you're sitting in an ER waiting for stitches.
It would be better if the barrel was up on blocks so it makes it easier to put buckets under spout
He said that if you payed attention
Great information ❤
Great video! Thank you!!!
Hello from bradley s.c. thanks for the info
My ultimate goal is to have a multi barrel system set up to run into the house through a filter system and then into the house/water heater.
Thanks Don!
Sad to find “Barrel Superstore” shut down !!!
You can also use 35 gal. trash cans, cut out the middle of the lid and attach screens to it.
Yes for a lot more money. Most these barrels are $10 and under. A 35 gallon trash can runs around ~$25+
Have one that size as a first flush before it goes into a 300 gallon tote.
What can you do in a massive rainstorm where the barrel overflows and you want to divert water from the house?
Teflon tape is the tape used ; available @ any hardware store in the plumbing section.
How about adding a hose to spigot and running the hose into the house and then add a small pump to be able to fill bottles inside dwelling?
If so, what kind of pump would you suggest?
Or for off grid living
Very good information
Awesome, Don!
What do you treat the water with once the rain water is stored and how?
Good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Thanks Michael! God bless you and yours
Thanks
What do you put in the water to make it safe drinking water if you don't have a Berklee?
Thanks for the info
Berkey does say their filters don’t filter chemicals from rain running off an asphalt shingle roof - just FYI.
Good to know. I wasnt aware of that. The chemicals already in our drinking water are not good either. May be worse than the chemicals from a roof.....🤔 Will only use it for drinking water in extreme situations and I will add some holy water.
Great video god bless you
I have a 250 gallon tank. I need to find out if itswater safe. Those drums are good because you can move them
Great video. I live in Spartanburg and have bought from barrel superstore a couple of times in the past. Good people. Where is the Tropicana plant? I didn't know it existed.
Barrels that freeze will crack.
A drop of dish soap keeps the Mosquitoes away
Thanks. Any tips on helping prevent freezing?
Thanks.
I know I’m late to this but I just have a question. My roof is shingle roof when it rains here the roof materials end up at the bottom of the barrel especially when it rains in the summer time, what can I do to make it safe to drank?
I just thought to set one these up last week. Great detailed video. Thanks so much 😁
