    They all sound nice but I am looking for a unique voiced flute. So many sound a lot alike. I like the Island bamboo flute the best I think. It has a refreshing haunting voice. But I love to hike so the plastic would be good to take along. The pine flute sounds pretty too. Its mellow and warm and has a voice that sings security, balance, and peace.

    Great job Jonny! It is ear opening to hear the flutes side by side and back to back at the end. Thanks for all you are doing for flute community. I am especially moved by the work you are doing that is getting Native American style flutes into kids hands. I am honored to be a part of helping to make this happen. That is where my heart is too. And of course into the hands of those who are kids at heart, like me. ;-)

      @@JonnyLipford I'm sure I will enjoy it. The only caveat is that when I listen to all you youtubers demoing flutes, you make them sound quite a bit better than us newbies can. If only because you use quite a bit of vibrato, which is not a beginner thing.

    Interesting! I enjoyed the Plastic one quite a bit and the JP Gomez. I think I like rooting for underdogs like plastic, because it’s pretty normal to enter into it with some bias that “no way, plastic can’t sound good”, but if you were to ask the audience to listen blindfolded, you couldn’t “hear plastic”, you just hear a unique voice. Plus, the durability for travel etc is appealing.

    Thoroughly enjoyed the comparison. For my taste, hands down, the best tone came from the JP Gomez flute, due to the flutemaker and the clear rich sound of walnut. Second choice was the Island Bamboo flute. I was surprised at the richness of sound it offered. Thank you for doing this and I look forward to more of these videos!

    I can't really say which one I like the best, Jonny - they all had their distinctive sounds and virtues. Of the five, I think that three of them - the plastic flute, the bamboo flute and the ceramic flute - all were very good. I have a piece of bamboo that I would like to make an A flute out of. The problem is that it is from Tonkin Bamboo, which is just about the hardest and densest species of bamboo out there - the thing has a brittle, metallic sound, due to its extreme hardness, and I don't know how to mellow it out.

    I can't believe I liked the plastic maybe the best... it's a toss up between that and the last one (Walnut). The bamboo one however was weird to listen to-- it made me feel short of breath!

    Nice comparison. The only "negative", I feel, was the lower tuning on the Jonah Thompson flute. It was a pretty noticeable difference when played back-to-back toward the end here. Almost like it was a 432hz tuned flute when heard in the middle of the others. I would also suggest that an accomplished player as yourself can manipulate your breath and playing "input" to make every flute rise to its optimal potential. Something that takes a newer player a while to find in their playing abilities. You make them all sound great Jonny! Again, a well done comparison, my friend.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  4 роки тому

      Indeed, the Jonah Thompson flute has a "different" voice and breath is definitely part of the input for each flute to achieve its optimal voice. Thanks for watching!

      Brent, I have to agree with your assertion on this particular flute. I have a Jonah Thompson A, and this made me pull it out and play it along with the video. It is definitely not in tune with this one, which I thought of as being "flat". I also agree with Brent that professionals have the ability to make all of these flutes sound great. That is why I prefer to buy flutes in person rather than hearing a pro play it in a clip. They have abilities that I don't. They have breath control and many ways to make a flute truly "sing" its best that I lack. But it does give me a chance to hear what a flute can and should sound like at its optimum, thus a goal to achieve. Thanks Jonny!

    Nice comparison.
    The plastic sounds better than expected, nice and deep, but a little thin and too precise.
    The bamboo is a little reminiscent of a shakuhachi.
    The ceramic reminds me of an ocarina in texture.
    I have two Jonah Tomsons, both in A-minor and both Ponderosa Pine. One sounds just like yours, mellow and a little flat of concert reference pitch. The other is bright, crisp, grainy, and right on 440 Hz.
    The walnut is very clear. Not my preference.

    I am new to flute playing and love watching your videos to learn and also listen for relaxation too. For the question: for my ear, I loved the last flute the best because it seemed to have both roundness? in the deeper tones and sweetness in the upper tones if that makes any sense? I was very surprised at how well the plastic flute played. I just ordered an Aeolian flute from Singing Tree Flutes (Black Limba) in the key of G.

    Hi! I have a question. I recently bought the transverse bamboo flute (fkey) from your website. In the website, it said that it could play sharp’s and flats with the one octave range. However, I cannot find a fingering chart anywhere. Do you have any recommendations? Also, can the music you wrote for Native American flutes he played on those bamboo flutes?

  • @naiman4535
    @naiman4535 4 роки тому +2

    The Jonah Tompson flute was a little lower in pitch than the others, and the upper notes in the octave were quite flat. Nothing that a rat tail file couldn't fix to bring it back into tune!

      @@JonnyLipford I have some Jonah Thompson flutes in my collection, and to be perfectly honest, they are better tuned in the upper notes than that one. It seems like A is the key that Jonah Thompson prefers. Some have called Jonah Thompson flutes "the most flute for your money". I would probably agree. I suppose that many have gotten into flute making by first doing re-tunings and adjustments on flutes they bought.
