    I got a five hole flute and struggled to play the notes written on paper, but found I could play effortlessly the songs I could hear in my mind. I have not been able to do this with other instruments. Thanks for all the tips you freely share Jonny.

      You can learn to adapt standard flute diagrams to a five hole flute, but it will take some practice. But improvising is a wonderful way to enjoy this instrument too.

    Just a short while ago, the flute I got was decided for me by what I found pre-owned. A High Spirits F# in walnut that I could get in my country (fortunately in a near new condition, only the rubber band had turned into goo 😂).
    Thank you for the video. 🙂

    I'm so excited. I have been drawn to the native American flute sounds. Just this morning I had a thought that I wanted to learn a musical instrument. I have tried the piano and the guitar and the ukulele and nothing has stuck or felt right. I knew this morning that the native American flute was the right one for me. I'm really looking forward to your videos and learning more. This video really helped me understand the sounds and where I want to start and just some of the basics. Thank you thank you thank you

    I love this video I have one suggestion to add! When you are talking about fingerings, you rightly talk about the pinky fingers. It's so important (as you say) to not curl your pinky fingers. This will tighten up the rest of the fingers. Mu suggestion is:
    Rest your pinky fingers on the flute. This will give you leverage, especially when playing an all holes open note.. In the right hand, this will come naturally to those who have studied western concert flute.
    If the pinky fingers are resting on the flute, all the other fingers will be less tense.

    My first time out of the gate i thought something is wrong with my flute, it won't make sounds lol.
    I gave up on it.
    Fast forward a few years, I found the flute, picked it up and blew and discovered that the flute was fine.
    So I bought books, looked at tab and wasn't very good. When I don't think about it at all and just improvise, it sounds great. Very intuitive instrument indeed.

    Delighted to find you! I just bought 3 flutes second hand for Euros 130. One high spirits mid range A 432 hz, one large f ancient territories @432 hz and a cheaper plastic f# from muzikkon. With loads of books. I’m creating meditative music and sounds for a palliative care research project where we are going to use nature based virtual reality experiences to hopefully remove the symptom burden often experienced toward end of life. I played the recorder years ago and have basics but I think once I’ve played around a bit I will definitely pick up one of your courses. I am starting to save $$ to buy some instruments to play for my volunteer hospice/bedridden patients and so far have 2 tongue drums, and just bought two Native American flutes (on EBay.) 😮 🤓 Yes, it was a crapshoot, but … If you think you can’t play a flute like he has - think twice. I am watching videos and sound amazing after just 10 days! (I do recommend buying his flutes, or something reliable and not eBay. 😢) One of my flutes from EBay sounds like a cat being baptized. 😝
    Thank you for mentioning the different places to give back to society. I was like, “Yea…that’s what I do!!” 🥳🥳🥳 #PayItForward #Volunteer #GiveCaregiversABreak

    Very informative! As a saxophone player it there are some things that are similar. So from a Mid C flute to a lower C flute the lower the note the bigger the instrument and vice versa? I have always loved the sound of the native flute and now I will be considering getting one soon.

    • @JonnyLipford
      @JonnyLipford  5 місяців тому +1

      Correct. Just like Saxophones, the bigger the flute the lower the tone, for the most part. There are some unusual exceptions from some creative flutemakers.

    What company/ies would you recommend for a bass flute (I'm not a beginner)? I'd love to have a Jonah Thompson (I have his Gm one and it sends shivers down my spine), but he seems to be concentrating on the mid-range size. I can't afford four figures, but surely there's something more affordable. Living in Navajo country, I prefer to patronize area artisans, but that doesn't seem possible in this case!
