  • Regrow New Onions From Another Onion? Well, let's find out. In this video, we revisit the experiment from last summer where we sliced off the root end of a regular yellow onion, suspended it in water until it rooted, then planted it. Apparently that wasn't good enough and the naysayers said that a true onion will never form again from that sliced end.
    Well, ok then. Let's find out.

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms brown onion is the one that I got sets from. The red and brown onion went to seed too. I think I know why I got seeds with some and sets with some. It depends when you plant them. Some I planted later in the year and some before winter and during winter. I started them inside though in a plate of water to get the roots started. Pre sure onions need that cold spell of winter to split and grow more onions. I may be wrong but I’m growing more this year and just planted more. I’m going to do a heap more this year and i will plant them throughout the whole year so I know what works best.

    Question. Dixon. Dale says when you get the onion plants do not soak in water. Or place in soil before planting. They also say wait until you have at least a week of temps above freezing before planting. Why wouldn’t it help to get the roots growing before setting the plants out? Wouldn’t that give the onions a quicker start ?

  • @alrinaleroux9229
    @alrinaleroux9229 3 роки тому +1

    Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with.
    During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly.
    Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized.
    Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit.
    It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be.
    It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed.
    Wishing you all the best!!

      @alrinaleroux9229 Рік тому

      @@mayhemschild Thank you, I appreciate this tip! I saw on a UA-cam video just now that onion juice isn't really a rooting hormone, but it can be called a rooting agent: "Onion due to its antimicrobial properties when mixed along with other stuff will certain improve the results of rooting your plant cuttings. To prepare this: Take 1/4 Onion, add 1/2 cup of Fresh Aloe Vera Juice extracted from a leaf; add some Cinnamon of Willow bark into this (it's better to have presoaked it in a cup of water for about 24 hours); then add this cup of water into the blender and make it into a fine paste or solution; then strain out this liquid to use it as a rooting agent. Just dip the cuttings into this solution or apply it with your finger and plant the cuttings."

      They get harvested the same way as if you were growing them from seed or set. You can move some of the soil away to peek at the bulb, like you would with garlic. The stuff growing at the tip could indeed be a flower head. Unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere, now isn't the time for bulb harvesting. Wow , I just bought 150 onion starters, from hoss tools they also have a Channel, they will b delivering here in Montgomery County, Texas after November 1st , I've been getting my land tilled, this forsure would save me money!! Thank you , also I messed up a tote full of fingerlings I thought were determinate, well not ...I have to either let them just make what I've covered with about 8inches dirt or stop it now & use for broccoli, garlic etc .
    Went to home depot for like something to put in tote 38 inch diameter, but the greens grew a good 12 inches ,while I was away camping in My RV , stupid , the Gentlemen at home depot said maybe put 4 posts in then like thin wood or ? Hammer or Staple, the wood to posta all 4 sides an I could add more dirt ..
    So glad got 4 above ground 4×8 beds for my bday & a 2x6 standing one with a Shelf for my deck...
    So frustrated , didn't realize they were indeterminate potatoes, but learning is Helpful , thank you Josette Tharp
    Montgomery County, Texas 👍👍👍👍👍

    cutting onions off at the three quarter point make them turn into four onions and then sixteen onion and after that is just gets to big. it would be a big show man. please try it and remember all you have to do it top them and then add compost to the row around it.

    Hi. I have an onion ready with a lots of new roots but no shoots to plant. The question is that when is the right time for planting? ! Can I plant it now beginning of fall ,outside?

      Hey fery, it depends on how cold your fall is. Onions aren't like garlic where they need an over-wintering period. Ideally this is all done in the spring.
