On ebay when selling second hand items, placing a stock image or another sellers image from their listing it gives the buyer too much opportunity to claim "not as described / pictured" and you are in to the demands for a discount / the threat of NEGATIVE FEEDBACK or paying for the cost of return postage and giving a full refund. Similarly won't buy from Magpie as the books purchased have never been to the standard of the photo used and felt let down by the item delivered.

A while ago, I bought a DVD boxed set from Magpie and when it was delivered the cover was in a dreadful state so I complained. They refunded me the full cost and I got to keep the set.

Just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I have been watching for about a year. I moved back from Las Vegas to South Wales back in December and needed to set something new up. I sold jewellery in America and made a good income but I cant find a reliable steady supply of quality items at anything like the prices I was able to pay in the US. I have been watching you turn 50p items into £20 sales for a year now and figured I would give it a try. I went to a local auction and paid a few pounds for some lots of china/porcelain and some knick-knacks. I have been listing like crazy. I have already hit a profit after just a week and have £2k listed inventory and about that much again that I have not listed yet. Just wanted to say thank you for being inspiration for this and being so genuine with your videos. I have some family members that are naysayers and worry I am wasting my time, I just show them your eBay shop sold section and your videos and it soon has them changing their tune .All the best

It used to be against ebay rules but seems you can use now. But why should others be able to get away with not doing the work when we have. Also i think if its used it should be individual photo's for each thing. No 2 things are identical. I dont like using stock photo's either. Taking photo's can take a while when done properly why should other people be able to use them. Just my opinion on the subject. ☺

It's funny you should mention this.
just this week we received a cheeky offer on a vintage Subuteo floodlight set.
Before declining, I checked what else was available and saw that another seller had used our listing to list his own set.
I have no problem with 'Sell similar' and the seller did use his own photo's
However, he had undercut our price by almost half (Which just drives prices down) and copied our description word for word.
It's juts lazy listing because I had to message the fella to inform him of a mistake.
He had included a fault on the item concerning the batteries in the description that did not apply to his listing.
if you use 'Sell Similar' to list, at least have the decency to accurately describe your own item.
He mentioned in his reply that the market will dictate prices on ebay but that's not true, people do.
If you need stuff shifting, just match the cheapest price, don't drive prices down please re-sellers.

I've seen my pics used by other ebayers and it does boil your piss when you take the time and effort to take a good photo and someone uses yours...alongside this is putting the condition as used when used does not describe the condition or sold as seen and one photo or listing the item as new when it obviously isn't.

I always take my own photos. I have used a stock image occasionally when I'm selling something new & sealed.

i go out and source, when i get home i always grab everything new and sealed that i bought that day and list using stock images or google images making sure its identical, it is so quick to get those listed, then for everything that is clearly not new, i take my own photos with my tag underneath, the tag is not to stop other people using the images, its simply so that the buyer understands what they see in the picture is the exact item they are getting on purchase.

Somebody used my pictures once, had my family photo's in the background, so knew they were mine. Told ebay, they said it is against copyright rules and took the listing down.

We have seen our photos used by other sellers one even had my hubbys hand holding a glass in the picture never knew he lived in Australia 😅 but don’t agree with sellers using other people’s photos as it can be an items not as described and above all it is sheer laziness

A lot of what I sell are new items so if I've bought an item in a supermarket sale I will use their own stock photo but I've never ever pinched photos from other eBay sellers when selling used items, even though my own photos are not the best.

I mostly take my own photos, but I must admit I have occasionally used someone else's photos in my listing if I think the photo is better than I can manage. I would take it as a compliment if someone used my photos.

If its a very common mass produced item (book, CD, DVD, games) in standard quality stock photos are ok as long as you make it clear its a stock photo - otherwise individual items should be photos of the actual item - in my opinion anyway

I sell antiques, art and glass and spend a lot of time taking pictures to accurately show any wear, scratches or damage so that my buyers are fully aware of the condition. I would not use pictures from a similar item as the items are used and will not be the same as the picture I have copied. I also don’t agree with anyone else using my pictures!
If I buy a dress from Next, I know it’s not that dress that I will receive but I know it will be identical in condition & colour because it’s brand new

The only time I would use someone else's picture is if it was a brand new and sealed item and I would use the stock photo. Apart from that I take my own pictures so I can show my own personal item that is for sale. I don't think using pics other people have taken is fair and would also be wary about mis-representing the item and having a potential SNAD case opened against me.

really annoying getting pictures stolen if its an individual specific item ...ie i had hand made items fitted to MY car .....the item got copied but the seller didnt have the unique picture of it fitted so stole mine

I think the rules on eBay regarding using other sellers photos changed a few years ago. Previously you couldn't use other's photos but now you can. Personally, I don't do this and prefer to take photos of the actual item I'm selling. Having said that, I do have some listings with the stock photo for books, but these listings are old, and I don't do it now.

I don't mind if people use my pictures however I'd never use anyone else's, I think you should always show the ACTUAL pictures of the item you will post, as a buyer I
Like to see the actual item,

  • @stevirobbo

Right I don't know where to start with this one as it's actually against the law to use other peoples pictures whether you feel it's the same item or not. Fraudsters are copying peoples original pictures of original items and using them to sell illegal or counterfeit goods, which is illegal and if you got something through the post that was counterfeit that you thought was real you would be saying to ebay or the police depending on how expensive it was " well it looked real in the pictures"!, which brings us to the pictures the ones that are copyrighted material and belong to the person who took the photo whether you believe it's just a picture or not, the picture can be traced back to the originator who took the picture through the pictures properties which leads me back to the counterfeiting at the beginning of my essay haha they will come to you first when any investigations start as "it"s your picture!!" So it is better to not copy pictures and just take them yourself, some companys like magpie etc don't even know what they are selling and most items get sent back to them because of poor quality or wrong item or missing stuff and they just use the same stock photos for every item they sell. So whatever you buy from them is guarenteed to be something other than what you viewed. Now you might think i'm just overaecting on the subject but i've bought an item that was expensive for a special occasion and when it arrive was just a cheap knockoff nothing like the picture and I never got my money back because it was China and where it was in china didn't come under our regulations even when I went through trading standards and ebay so i'm hoping with all this AI technology coming in they will be able to identify immediately when someone is using someone elses material and block them. Then all the companys will have to snap shot their own items properly and stop using stock photos of items they don't carry. It is so frustrating trying to collect something when every time I buy a game that is sopposed to be a Pal UK game it turns out to be a Pal European title because they constantly copy the games picture and it's not the game they are selling and it's happening so frequently that I'm thinking of buying elsewhere than ebay. Or I will text them and say what colour is the triangle on spine for identification because most have not put the side view of the game on, and they say ...if they can be bothered to answer lately... "What do you mean? " They are selling items they nothing about or are just plain ignorant, if you are selling an item at least have the decency to show the entire item and put a full description and you will sell the item more easily because I've started to skip any itema not properly photographed and a full description. It's lazy selling and it causes you to lose potential buyers. I'll get off my soapbox now but know I don't agree with anything to do with copying for selling 😊

I put in a lot of effort to take and post decent pictures. IMO this can be a clear differentiator where other competing listing pictures are blurred or dark and just not clear as to condition of item. So not keen on others being able to use. In the day I have reported the other seller and they have taken down my pictures. Not seen it for a long time maybe because I now tend to use a specific backdrop which is easy to ID. Re use of manufacturer stock pictures, typically might use if what I am selling is brand new and sealed in its original retail packaging especially if multiple parts and in a box.

I don't care what people do. If they want to run the risk of someone using my images for an item that isn't exactly the same as theirs and may have flaws, then that's on them. I dont care about the legalities. Personally, unless it's a boxed and unopened item and BNIB then it's okay to use. But if it's a used product - it's disingenuous to prospective buyers as my items may differ slightly to those ones whose photos I've used.

You upload to eBay, rights of use pass over to eBay. They can use (catalogue/Google ads etc.) and to the point of your video - also any eBay customer can use it, this is per 'eBay's image, video and text policy'.
