In this mini podcast whilst Mark and I were in Amsterdam we had to visit Stephen & Penelope in Amsterdam - and wow what a shop, home of @StephenWest!

If I ever visit Stephen & Penelope and a store assistant came up to me and asked "Is there anything I can help you with" , I fear that my reply would be "Yes ... I'll have one of everything!!!" 🤣 Those yarns look absolutly beautiful, I can see how easy it would be to have decision issues.

I have never been to Amsterdam and have always wanted to go, so thanks for the tour! Great seeing inside the S&P mothership as well! This may have also inspired me to buy some tulips! 🌷

Such a beautiful city! I can't believe that you can take fresh flowers on the plane! So cool! It was nice that you turned off the camera & focused on Mark for his birthday! Much as you love us, you love him more!
watching the pod I was thinking how many bikes were everywhere all over the place and then you cut to the sign over Stephen and Penelope's door ... the penny dropped ... this is why the walk wool has bicycles on the label . Thank you for that lovely trip to Amsterdam. Flowers and yarn, what more could you ask. Mark you are such a patient co-shopper. My goodness the cost of that yarn was astonishing. The exchange rate for the Australian dollar puts that beautiful yarn way out of my reach. Thanks again ❤️❤️❤️ to you both.
Stephen and Penelope’s prices are a lot higher. I have found that you can go direct to the dyers and save money but they are hand dyed and that does come at a premium.
@@maricami62 thanks Marian. I really admire and appreciate the work of the hand dyers. It is just our Australian dollar does not buy many Euros, Pounds or US dollars.
I was at Stephen and Penelope just after you were there. Sorry I missed meeting you two! Thanks for this lovely podette as it will remind me of the great time I had shopping for all that lovely yarn. You’re right, the store is awesome and the staff was so very helpful. Lovely place!
Thank you for taking me to Amsterdam; it is on my travel list. The street scenes were lovely, but the flower market! I don’t know how Mark was able to select just one bouquet. I would want them all. Your visit to Stephen and Penelope’s was wonderful, and your purchases were lovely. I love both your colors, especially the turquoise and gray. Martin, since I was just in Amsterdam 10 days ago, I loved seeing all the places you went! I was in most of the same places, including Stephen and Penelope. Thank you for that podcast. It brought me so much joy and happy memories.

Loki would be a nice cowl. I never get tired of seeing Stephen & Penelope. The tulips are gorgeous and it sounds like you had the most relaxing vacation. All good things.
Thank you so much for taking us along on your trip! I might have been able to spend as long in the flower market as I would have at Stephen & Penelope’s. I’ve never seen so many bulbs in one shop before.
Glad you got to visit S & P. My friend bought me 3 skeins of yarn there in November. He actually got to meet Stephen (he is not a knitter so it was mostly wasted but he did get a photo with Stephen & the yarn he bought) and Stephen picked out one of the skeins my friend bought for me. 😍
Also have a Punk Rock Unicorn kit that has a skein of Loki in it. I am making a Shawlography with it.
Oh Martyn and Mark this video couldn't have come at a better time. We(my brother and i) were going through some of the photos from my late mother's', and surprisingly a photo of my mom and her great uncle Pierre taken in front of the building that houses Stephen and Penelope was shown to me. It was taken just before my mother and here family immigrated to Canada when she was 9 in the 50s. Had to rewind you video a few times to make sure..

funny to see a tour trip in amsterdam through your eyes as a Dutch. I've never been to Amsterdam myself. Stephen and Penalope are on my wish list to go there someday. it's just a bit inconvenient for me because I can't walk far and it's difficult or impossible to get into the city itself with a car in amsterdam because they are forbidden there. you made a good purchase on the tulips they were cheap here in the city you pay 5 euros for 10 tulips at least.Was nice to see a piece of amsterdam through your eyes

Honestly, I think I would have expected it to be more of a superstore also, happy to hear it's cozy.
I was also happy to see "essence of autumn" there, she's a Canadian dyer that I follow on UA-cam.... She's amazing!

You lucky lucky pair! I’ve been to Amsterdam twice , quite some years ago. We got the train to I think it was Haarlem and there is a yarn shop there. Did you go in the double decker trains? Fabulous! Love the yarn you got , I bet you were drooling walking round the shop but OMG! The prices! Yes I know it was euros but cricket…a sweater’s worth at €36/100gms..you’d need a small mortgage! Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you do with them all.
Gorgeous, gorgeous yarns. The yellow is fabulous, will work beautifully with the Spectra.
I've just cast on my fourth pair of socks this year. Another set for husband. I'm still tweaking the pattern for the best fit. Last pair I went up a needle size, but just a tad to big, so come down to a 3mm 9" circular needle and 68 st from 72.
He's a UK size 12 foot so takes a lot of yarn?
Amsterdam looked amazing. I'll go one day.

Thanks for taking us on your trip! Loved seeing the sights and S&P; the shop makes me realize how good I have it here in lil' ol' Fort Wayne IN. I can get Qing, Hedgehog, LITLG, ALL the Mad Tosh, Rowan, Ikigai, Isager, etc. all sorts of name brands within 7 miles from home. I'd still like to get to Amsterdam sometime 🎉❤

I've been to Amsterdam, but that was before I really digged into knitting so I did not know about S&P back then at all.
I don't think I accidentially walked by the shop.

You may not want to read this, but I think Loki would make an excellent CC for the Spectra. Spectra was actually my very first westknits piece. I used some grey sock yarn as MC and a rainbowy skein of Noro Kureyon Sock. Super lovely to look at, but quite scratchy to wear 🙈
Regarding plans: will you do the - yet unknown - Toft easter CAL? I'm sure I can do it form stash like last year 😅won't be able to finish my Cozy Corner Shawl before, but I'm now at over 80% at least I guess, so good progress made.

Ouff, très belle boutique..!! Merci pour ce reportage.. On constate bien les prix inflationnistes.. 35 euros pour un écheveau de laine.. une certaine catégorie de population ne peut pas s'offrir celà à un tel tarif.. Mais avoir du succès "relatif" permet de profiter à la société "mode-consommation".. Vive les "Pays-Bas" et leurs agriculteurs complètement noyés-faillite dans les décisions Européennes.. Des belles laines à des tarifs disuasifs... Reportage sympas néanmoins ... ça glisse et on passe aux priorités essentielles .. où quand même le beau ne vous créé plus aucune sensation "bonheur"
The person who helped me at the store mentioned that Dashing Sassy is an exclusive base to their shop, so of course I had to get a couple of skeins while I was there!

Didnt get to see Amsterdam during the day. Everything was closed. How long has Stephen & Penelope been open? Those skeins of yarn are a bit expensive @ A$48. We arnt allowed to take flowers or fruit and vegies to other states here in Australia.

Thank you Martin for this absolutely lovely podcast. I too visited the flower market and S&P last summer and needless to say I would have bought so much more than my credit card allowed me to. BTW I still haven't found the 'rigth' pattern for the yarn I purchased.😂🌷🚴🛍🇳🇱🧶
