"Here's what I love about Dylan: He was exactly as you'd expect he would be. He wouldn't come to the rehearsal; usually, all these guys are practicing before the set in the evening. He didn't want to take a picture with me; usually all the talent is dying to take a picture with me and Michelle before the show, but he didn't show up to that. He came in and played 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' A beautiful rendition. The guy is so steeped in this stuff that he can just come up with some new arrangement, and the song sounds completely different. Finishes the song, steps off the stage - I'm sitting right in the front row - comes up, shakes my hand, sort of tips his head, gives me just a little grin, and then leaves. And that was it - then he left. That was our only interaction with him. And I thought: That's how you want Bob Dylan, right? You don't want him to be all cheesin' and grinnin' with you. You want him to be a little skeptical about the whole enterprise. So that was a real treat."- Obama
Joseph Gent One thing perhaps if not many , Obama and Dylan have in common is their deportment . Dylan has own propriety as does Obama , neither will tarnish their own . This is just what you’d expect from Bob , he doesn’t try to oversell himself to anyone , president or not. I guess when you’re Bob Dylan you don’t need to try to impress . Bob knows who owns his soul , no need of pretence ☮️😎
Great contribution, Joseph. Its what they they like to call it authenticity, which would be a curious appellation to attach to Bob, given the tension between that and the ever evolving cinematic experience that is Robert Zimmerman. He is more than a song and dance man - that's for sure. I'm glad I have followed him without pause from 1965, like some kind of admiring, aural stalker. I have no doubt that he is the greatest and most important cultural force of our times and it will take decades to unpack his contribution.
Just astounding to me how he is able to turn this most strident of protest songs into a tender meditation on aging, without compromising the moral tone. And how the piano arrangement gives if this very American Coplandesque sound, in keeping with the venue and the occasion. My God, the man is just incredible.
Best performance I´ve heard from Dylan since the 90´s.. Apparently he Can singI Very beautiful indeed.. Great arrangement! He should do it like this on Tour.
Just listen to him sing his "Lay Lady Lay"......also his Album with Johnny Cash....he sings very good along with Johnny, or on his own parts.....He can sing when he wants to, and very good too......He just seems to like to keep that Dylan Reputation going....with the crazy nasal voice....
+Ray R He would not be Bob Dylan if he sang any other way, all sweet and with vibrato. His voice is derived from the great American folk music style of singing along with his own unique way of vocalising. We love all of his work and his distinctive singing voice because it all blends together seamlessly into a totally special and unmatchable product from a multi-talented genius, which appeals to billions of people, worldwide, whether or not English is their first language, or all ages. Beat that.
Amen, Janet. He is a jerk on tour, doing totally nonsensical versions of his songs. This proves, like you say, he CAN sing very beautiful when he decides he wants to.
I am 77 years of age, I have followed Mr Dylan,/Bob/ from the age of 16/17, respect of him I can not use, he is far greater than that word, respect, he is untouchable regards any bad comments, his words and music are the WORLD for ever. Truley the man is unbievable, no 1 guy of the world,,,,,,,best regards Bob,,,,,,
I saw the D Man at Mudcats Stadium outside Raleigh NC in the hottest most humid day EVER I was already 1 12 pack of Heineken in when I got there with Neil D Blues Man and his lovely wife Doreen whos approval I needed b 4 Neil would agree to take me to the show.. after 20 min it was too hot for more ales and I switched to water. Only disappointment is Bob was on Keys the entire show,
What a fantastic performance in an unusual line-up! Bob with his rough voice really touches our heart with an old song that still is of relevance today. And Tony Garnier on double bass is a wonderful musician. Really GREAT ! Perhaps the best thing that ever happened in the White House. ;)
This song will be actual forever. It won't get old. Those lyrics, this prestation, this creator of sweet words and quiet music oceans...that makes of this song one of the greatest ballads I ever heard. Bob, don't leave us, keep singing and creating, let our hearts between your words.
Its rare to see Mr. Zimmerman sing with his eyes closed... He still has the love for it. This is an amazing performance!! Thanks for posting this video, and Thanks Bob for the 1000s of hours we have listened to you and you brilliant bands!
i just love this relaxed slow rendition. bob dylan has done so many great versions of this great historic song, and how appropriate to do it at the white house.
Bob is and will always be a hero to me. It was he who instilled in me the need to write and play and perform. I love that he still inspires me after fifty years of listening.
Your listening to a music genius that was here before your father for most of you. Still bringing it at this age is truly inspiring, This guy has the 1,000 mile stare he has seen shit. People name their children "Dylan". You don't have to like him, but respect him,
"So thank you for writing the best songs, Thank you for righting a few wrongs You're a savage gift on a wayward bus, But you stepped down and you sang to us" -- J. Baez
Yes, he does the song brilliantly, but did you catch the "18th century way" he combed his hair and cut the fashion of that time too, tie, vest and coat. Brilliant, classic Dylan subtlety. Profound.
What an amazing song. Every word ever so true, and prophetic, and profound, and apt for all times. The singing, majestic like only Bob Dylan could. What an artist, what an era, quite simply magical.
I do, too! Do I have the right? I don't know him! This guy makes us love him for better or worse though! And he certainly payed the price for that, unfortunately. But I can't help it!
I just adore him...His lyrics and songs have always touched me deeply... He's a genius of course...Sure you have the right to love him...lol. I'm not sure what you mean though that he "has paid a price for that." I'm sure life hasn't always been easy for him, but I'm not sure what you mean...
@@goddesoflibraries It's like the Beatles said "Boy, you're going to carry that weight, carry that weight, for a long time." I think this is the best he's sounded doing this song. His voice is so rich and emotive. The raspiness really adds to the effect and he hits the notes about as close as he should without sounding ever sounding weak or innefectual. Thanks for the upload!
Why should anybody be arguing on a beautiful Bob Dylan video regardless of who is in power or what is going on we can all appreciate the lyrics and remember president, monarch, or singer, there is not one person in the world or our USA that can change anything without the masses trying to make a difference.
The voice of Bob Dylan singing out his exquisite poetry, Anarchy, society, philosophy. He is among the few elite artists in world history to express his times so beautifully and creatively. His voice is the only voice it could be. Singing this song of warning at the White House was a great choice........................ "The order is rapidly fading"
If all he did was come out on stage and stand there I would still be in awe, no lyrics ever written are as poetic and untimely as Bob Dylans. And just think we have a president that agrees- wow.
I watch this often just for the reason that it's professionally recorded and filmed, I like his hoarse voice a lot better than his voice in the eighties, and I think he still stands tall for not taking the critisism from the people that don't understand.
Bob is, as always his usual amazing self of course. Each time I hear this performance I neglect (til now!) to mention this pianist and how in tune he is, the way I hear it! So now I've said it & will likely listen to this many more times.
I can't believe I'm going to see this man live in about a month. I can't wait. I'm a teen and I've been a big fan of Mr. Dylan for three years now. He hadn't come to my area of the US in years and I'm so glad he's coming back. This man is the greatest musician and artist who has ever lived.
I've just watched Joan Baez and now Bob Dylan performing in the White House. Yes, the times they ARE a changing.....bloody slowly but change they do. I clearly prefer the session with all thoses bluesmen plus Jeff Beck and Jagger with a great interpretation of Sweet Home Chicago.
Yep. I agree wholeheartedly. 12 years later and he's better than ever. Just saw him twice last month. Love that Bob!
Age 71 & he still puts out albums that hit the Top Ten...amazing!

I was noticing that too. He's old and a little croaky in the voice but he's still all there. He's a universal symbol.
well less IS more .
Every time I hear Bob Dylan singing, I feel different. I feel something running through my veins.
