    There's a nice story about this in Springsteen's autobiography. After the show Dylan thanked him for performing and told Springsteen to let him know if there was ever anything he could do for him. All Springsteen could say was, "It's already been done."

      I am not so sure there would be no Bruce Springsteen without Bob Dylan. I know that Bruce Springsteen is a very talented songwriter/singer/guitarist in his own right, and for that reason alone he has emerged in popular music and consequently gets the public recognition he truly deserves.

    Passing the torch. As a huge Springsteen fan, I am so proud that a man so in important to United States history, Bob Dylan, was early Springsteen fan. He saw himself in him, but also recognized that The Boss had his own things to say. That's passing the torch.

    If Dylan wasn't accepting the social and political impact of his songs, he never would have accepted this honor. At the end he gives Bruce some hard applause, not just a pitter-patter golf clap.
    Dylan started out his career being labeled the "new Woody Guthrie" so he knew what it was like spending your career in comparison to somebody else. I think by the 90s he and Bruce had come to a mutual understanding and Dylan took it as real respect.

    Lots of you that hate this are just taking it too seriously. None of you ever sang along to Dylan while trying to sound like him? Sure you did. I think that is why they call it entertainment. It's not as if a musical tribute should be on par with ones relationship with God, and such to be considered sacred. It's just life my friends, and enjoy the moments it allows us. I liked his version here.

    • @anthonysalvati5868
      @anthonysalvati5868 10 років тому +10

      I love Dylan and I love Bruce, and I agree with you completely, I'm sure that's exactly what Dylan was thinking, his look says it all. But that is more Dylan's problem than it is Bruce. Dylan has always fiercely divorced himself from the political and social implications of his songs, and always downplayed the notion that he was a spokesman for a generation through his songs. But, you can't write songs like The Times They are a Changin, Masters of War, Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, or The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, and then be divorce yourself from what those lyrics will mean to fans. Dylan knew exactly what is was doing when he wrote those songs, and knew they were politically charged lyrically. His reaction to those implications is just Dylan being Dylan.

    • @RoyPortel
      @RoyPortel 10 років тому +3

      Anthony Salvati Absolutely. Still, Bruce was being a little cocky, too, but I guess that's just Bruce being Bruce too, haha!

    • @anthonysalvati5868
      @anthonysalvati5868 10 років тому +2

      Roy de Smet Yeah as much as I love Bruce, I agree with you that his tone in that introduction was a little cocky, on the other hand Bruce historically has always treated his musical heroes with great deference, and Dylan is absolutely one of his musical heroes.

    • @davidcappel8292
      @davidcappel8292 10 років тому +1

      Anthony Salvati I always liked the line "beautiful call to arms" in his intro and don't thick that's cocky - but that's probably a label easily attached to anyone daring to take Dylan's lyrics verbatim? This stripped-down performance came at a time when Springsteen had toured extensively with his album "The ghost of Tom Joad" - album and tour showed that and how the times actually had changed.

    • @anthonysalvati5868
      @anthonysalvati5868 10 років тому +2

      David Cappel Exactly right David, I loved that line as well. I love the rocking Bruce but for me, The Tom Joad tour and the Devils and Dust tour captured Bruce at his best, just the way he auditioned for John Hammond, a guitar, his voice and his lyrics. Pure Bruce

    I like listening to Bruce's work. He made James Taylor's Millworker into something way more than anybody else did, and never tried to sound like anybody but himself.
    It must be something to do with Bob Dylan's status, but it seems to me that Bruce, as good as he is, puts way more effort into sounding like Bob Dylan than Bob ever tried to. I don't think I have heard Bob sing the same song the same way as he ever did before.

    Come gather 'round people
    Wherever you roam
    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown
    And accept it that soon
    You'll be drenched to the bone.
    If your time to you
    Is worth savin'
    Then you better start swimmin'
    Or you'll sink like a stone
    For the times they are a-changin'.
    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won't come again
    And don't speak too soon
    For the wheel's still in spin
    And there's no tellin' who
    That it's namin'.
    For the loser now
    Will be later to win
    For the times they are a-changin'.
    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don't stand in the doorway
    Don't block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
    Will be he who has stalled
    There's a battle outside ragin'.
    It'll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
    For the times they are a-changin'.
    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don't criticize
    What you can't understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
    Your old road is
    Rapidly agin'.
    Please get out of the new one
    If you can't lend your hand
    For the times they are a-changin'.
    The line it is drawn
    The curse it is cast
    The slow one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is
    Rapidly fadin'.
    And the first one now
    Will later be last
    For the times they are a-changin'.

    Springsteen is one of the few Dylan imitators to actually succeed. Neil Young is another.

      +Randy Bailin Sorry but Springsteen does not even come close. It's nowhere near the feeling and does not capture the meaning of Dylan. Truth be told it's laughable. He sounds like a constipated beagle,

      +Ulysses432 no he is right, springsteen is not a folk singer, his lyrics are good but not poems, Dylan and springsteen are different, neil young is nothing compared to dylan, (and so bruce).the only singers you study in school are Dylan, and an italian guy(fabrizio de andrè). If you listen the words of their songs you just get wrecked by the haviness of their thoughts. springsteen was a rocker not a poet, neil young was a folk singer, nothing more

      +fourever Airrival I'm not going to disagree with you, two different singers but you can see from the face Springsteen has something that he relates to this song and he sings it his way, i love Springsteen i love the original bob dylan. but i love the passion each has and each has their own memory to this song.

      +fourever Airrival Well, I would consider Springsteen folk albums poem. His lyrics are often just getting lost in the crowd of his shows.

    The press began calling Bruce "the new Bob Dylan" when the "old Bob Dylan" was like 32.

    I didn't anyone's performance could suck more than Dylan himself, but Bruce actually makes Bob sound like Pavarotti.

    Reading the comments on here remind me of another Dylan line "Everybody's shouting which side are you on?"

      I thought it was pretty darn good. Bruce likes to sing with that twang sometimes. Ever hear Bruce do the acoustic rendition of Born in the U.S.A.? Even his guitar was twangy in that one.
