This scanner does do pretty good color scans. The 320 uses a different scan method and does look a bit better depending on what you are scanning. They are both good color scanners.
Helpful review, thank you!!! Considering buying this to scan old newspaper comics from my collection - going back and forth on whether to get this because all my comics are in color!! Thanks again, best review on UA-cam!!
Glad it help, if you are going to scan color they do offer a color scanner but it's a couple hundred dollars more. It'll be perfectly fine for black and whites/gray scale though.
Hey Elden, I know this is a pretty old video, but could you maybe upload a highdef image of the color illustration you scanned? You are pretty much the only person supplying a nice review of this scanner, and seeing the results of your scans would be incredibly helpful!
Really appreciate the video as this was the only review I was able to find for this scanner. I took a couple of screenshots and messed around with the hue in Photoshop and it actually looks good. I'll be pulling the trigger on this one but I'm not expecting Photoshop to be able to save the day every time I'm going with color. I'm mainly getting it for the A3 format and for grayscale art.
Thank you Elden for this review. As others have said, this is the only one for the Plustek 1180. I appreciate the "real world" applications. You did good for me !! I like the comments on the UI !! hahahahahahaha.
@@EldenDraws , I bought my scanner the day after my review. It is late compared to your review, but it is NEW to me within one day of my purchase. Thank you again. Your review was right on.
I wish this review would have included a closer zoom showing the image quality of scanning. I ordered the plustek opticslim for scanning black and white line art and textures, but the quality is deplorable: the image has tiny stripes going throughout and if you are scanning a paper or surface that is even slightly not flat (for example watercolour original art), the image will be very blurry and messy on the parts that are not in direct contact with the scanner glass surface. For artwork that you want to use in digital mediums you might be fine with this quality, but if you want to scan line art for working with print, I would definitely not recommend this scanner. Maybe there has been a quality drop since this video was posted, but I returned mine.
Sorry to hear that you had issues with the scanner, I am not a representative of this brand so I don't know the ins and outs of the product entirely. But it might have been QC (Quality Control) issue. I still have the images scanned from back then and I do not see any stripes or sorts from the scanned pictures (when zoomed in). I even scanned one recently and didn't have that issue (with the settings I have). The only striations that are visible, are the bleeding the ink did to the paper. Which was scanned as is (I don't know of you were referring to that or something entirely different). I haven't used any other medium for this scanner other than a flat-ish imagine. Around 14:50 , I do state that it is good for "my personal needs for scanning and editing digitally". Which does cosign your ending statement. For the most part the quality you get from the scanner is fairly decent or good, it really depends on certain settings you use. Hopefully people find your experience helpful for their decision, while making a purchase. Again my perspective is from someone that is using it to scan images and editing or cleaning them up digitally.
i got this scanner a few months ago just decided to mess with it thanks for the tutorial. had to install files from online since i did not have a disk drive. your right the preview sucks balls. but man the scanner scans really good!!! excellent for comics. and i agree 300 bucks should of gotten a better UI, none the less. this is a great scanner! thanks for the tutorial
I know i can trust people when they have the minecraft icon on their desktop!!thanks a lot! That video will probably help me for my comic book artist career!
Hey man, do you know the name of the Plustek color scanner? For my art I don’t want to do black and white so the one you’re using wouldn’t be a good option, I assume the program for scanning on the color model is the same as this one though so thanks for the tutorial!
It scans color. But its CIS. The A320L uses CCD same as camera. plustek.com/newmea/products/flatbed-scanners/opticslim-1180/spec.php 48-bit input , 24-bit output
Hello! Can you please tell me the dimensions of a scanned image / file (in pixels) ?? I am considering of buying it but I would like to know first the dimensions - pixels of A3. Thank you!
Those are true statements to have, but even the manufacturer/ seller states that the colors are off when scanning colored images. Due to the scanner mainly being focused on black and white / gray scale images. And if someone wanted a better quality or truer color tone scanner then they offer a different scanner that does just that.
Hey, nice video! You mentioned that they have another scanner for color, is it also for A3? Can you give me the name of that scanner? You would really help me out. Thanks :)
Is the scanner you were talking about for the color scans the Plustek OpticPro A320L Tabloid Flatbed Scanner? If so I’ll probably buy that one even if it’s a bit more expensive, if you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it!
Yes the A320L is what plustek recommends of you are scanning colored images. Now fair warning, I have NOT used this product it is just what the company recommends for color scans. So I don't know how the images actually turn out after you scan said images. If you don't mind tweaking the colors in photo shop you can still use the scanner I reviewed and save a couple hundred dollars. But if you want to most accurate color spectrum they offer then you can try the A320L.
EldenDraws thanks for the info, I’ll probably buy the A320L and hopefully it has the features I’d like but if not I could always return it, I was going to buy the epson expression 12000 XL Graphics Art scanner because I read online that was the best scanner for art only downside is it’s 3 fucking grand haha
Anytime, and yea man you can always return it. And 3 grand is a shit tone of money imo unless your roi is able to come back to you within a year. Hopefully the scanner works out for you. Cause I know the pain of looking for one that does what you specifically want it to.
EldenDraws it’s been tough trying to find a decent scanner I had an HP officejet pro 7740 but as you pointed out in the video and what I’ve come to realize is HP products are complete shit the colors were pretty bad and then I was scanning my art on it at 1000 dpi and I was given the option to manually crop the image to the exact size then the final image that was saved to my photos was a cropped 1/4 sedition of the drawing and it kept doing this which was pretty annoying, that model was an all in one printer/scanner so it wasn’t made specially for scanning but of all the HP scanners the all in ones have the biggest flatbed which is pretty lame that they wouldn’t create a stand alone wide format scanner with the A3 12x17 size

Yea it is really good for the price, plus it's an A3 size scanner. Making it really good for the price, even if it is lacking in some aspects.

Glad you found that bit enjoyable 😉.
@@EldenDraws Hihi I do. I like your personality. So free and nice.

Thanks for reviewing this im thinking about getting one.
Anytime, it's an affordable scanner. But just remember it isn't the best for colored images.

Currently illustrating my manga. I dont really have color but its a compromise Im willing to make. Should I purchase this?
It works perfectly for me even now. So I would recommend it. Only for black and white through if you do tones by hand I'd try another scanner.
Cool review man thank you!!! Are you still using this scanner from the time of this review?
I still have it, but I don't do traditional art all that much anymore. Just digital atm. But it is still within reach if I ever do.
BEFORE talking about colors you should take care of your lightning environment (constant with D65 light) and calibrate your monitor.

it's possible to scan a framed prints with this scanner?
I am not entirely sure it would depend on the glass that it is framed with. If there will be a reflection.
This hanstgot a ccdchip right?
I'ma be honest I don't know what that is.
