EGR/VVT Smog Check Fail - 2000 Mazda Miata - Fixed

- This car failed its annual state inspection. I replaced the EGR valve after some diagnostic work and resolved an internal smog check failure. The car also had an offensive exhaust smell that seems to have been resolved as well.
Inside the air intake you have a route for the EGR to send those hot gases back into air intake and in the engine. It is recommended to also clean that route and, if possible, the intake for the best result. Ideal is to clean everything if you want the car to function perfectly, including the valves. 🤷♂️
This is what I did on mine. I cleaned (not replaced) the EGR valve, the air intake and the valves. It was like brand new.
Regarding the VVT, you should replace the o rings.
These cars are getting old and the o rings rubber became old.
Also change the o rings of the injectors. They are cheap and make a lot of difference.

@@dirtyshirtinfo well… back then I didn’t have an Mx-5 :). Now, since I have one, I start rebuilding it and took out piece by piece and analize it. And what I told you is what I discovered.
Anyway, it is good from time to time to clean the intake manifold. :)
Only 2001+ nb miatas have vvti.
Needs a Ford V8 swap. I told Scott Williams that I would have a great time hanging out with Jeff for a few hours. 👍

What is the red tool you used on the socket to take off the egr ?
I don’t want to go searching through the video but I think you’re talking about a socket spinner. That one is way old school, vintage early ‘80s from the Cornwall tool truck. There are updates versions. Google socket spinner.
