No, but it's bad that what they show here is NOT an accurate representation of prison food. For breakfast where I was we got 1 hot hardboiled egg, half a canned pear, and 2 pieces of white bread (every day). For lunch 2 pieces of bread with 1 piece of bologna (every day). Dinner was always some mixed slop of "meat" with pasta half a pear and 2 pieces of bread. What they showed was some kids school lunch not prison food.
And that isn't a VEGAN option. You don't get options unless it's a religious problem. Like a lot of school lunches fish is substituted with a soy product that is supposed to taste the same. It's the easiest way to get around allergies. So when they say "fish or soy" it means you get one or the other not an option to pick.
This is not even close to the meals served in Ohio prison system. I have 17 years as CO. Ohio food service in the prison system is ran by a private company. Needless to say the food is so nasty. High carbs lots of rice, peanut butter and different kinds of beans. Most of the inmates survive on commissary.

There was half of an orange that had started going bad and the main course was this white sauce that literally looked like semen and had chunks of some mystery meat. I was in the army in Korea in 1950 and 51 and while we got more each meal, it was about the same quality. At least it's hot where we had to eat cold C rations out of cans.

To me it doesn't even look nice, forget about trying. This is a horrible food without much nutrition value. If you don't get enough nutrition, for enough time, your body and mind will start to not work properly and you may end up doing wrong things
My father has been to prison. He said the worst thing he has there was a bologna sandwich. My school lunch is worse than prison food. I had raw chicken nuggets. I have been sick so often from their food!
I do now, before we were poor and my parents worked 24/7. I was little and there was nothing i could do about it. I was given free school lunch, but it was bad enough that i would have preferred not to eat.
That IS decent food. If it was a mushy stew of everything on the plates, then that would be cause to be upset. But this is food that some people would be glad and grateful to accept.

As somebody who just did 5 years in prison, I can tell you that these meals are very similar except the portions. The meals in this video are probably 50% more food than regular prison meals.

Yes there are people like that. And there are people in prison who have done some horrible horrible things. But there are a few in there that went in there falsely or made one bad choice and got stuck in there. Not every circumstance is the same. Not every person in prison is bad. Like not every person on the outside is good.

You're right, I myself went to prison for something I didn't do. So I had a girlfriend, we were both in the same job. And she started to get jealous because I was doing better at the job than she was. Then one day she had enough, and she told the manager a made up story that I abused her. And then I was sent to court, she had fake witnesses, and they sentenced me to 6 years in prison.

I don't think anyone can really judge prison food and prison life until they've lived it. I get that "these are prisoners and they deserve it" and I know they shouldn't be given 5-star meals but if you treat someone less than human for YEARS, how are they going to be able to function in society when released? There are many prisons in Europe that are realizing the inhumane, brutal methods simply are not working. There is actually a lot of studies done which find that the better you treat a prisoner and work WITH THEM to resolve their underlining issues, the less chance they have of reoffending upon release. Does everyone deserve special treatment? Hell no, there are some people who deserve to rot in prison. BUT, there are people who WILL be released and NEED to learn how to be an educated, well mannered, member of society. I'm not too concerned with how they're treated in prison, I'm concerned with how they will act upon being released so that more people do not get hurt or suffer due to an inadequate justice system.

Dropping the soap is a myth. I've been in prison and I've never seen someone get raped for dropping the soap. Instead the other inmates make fun of them, for example: "You dropped the soap!!! You gonna pick it up? Do you know how much sperm is in the floor" is what I've heard.
You know what, Im jealous their able to eat this. After all my bills, im surviving on about 9 dollars a day. The laptop I use is covered on the left side by green and black marks because of the pixels dying. even my vacuum recently broke so I cant even properly clean my apartment. but hey im living and happy. At university cafeterias in Bulgaria you get less than this. A bowl of soup of your choie (you have 3-4 options for the soup anyway), a main meal of your choice (another 3-4 options), a bun, and a dessert (it's either an apple or some gooey sweet cream). This costs 1 euro

If the food is terrible it is indeed cruel to force people to eat it constantly and just inhumane, so of course that's not ok. Gregory Everson Also, I think prison also has to scare people. You need to be conscious that if you commit a time, you will have a hard time. Not torture or anything like that, it's not a dungeon. Your time there shouldn't be painful but it should be unpleasent enough to make you actively avoid it. GalacticKutie but most of those ppl still have a record now for a petty crime or spent "a month" in jail for doing nothing. that record makes it hard to impossible to get a job let alone a reasonably paying job. so they end up back in jail either for doing another petty crime like stealing food. i'm from Chicago and the homeless here will commit petty crimes in the winter so they have a place to stay.
noelle livingston they don't always stay in prison for a "month" you don't send people to prison for a "month" that's why we have county jails. People are sent to prison for years for petty crimes. Marijuana is a huge cause ! If I'm correct than Marijuana is considered a class two drug but it's hardly any study's to prove it hinders a person as much as alcohol but we allow drunks to walk around with slaps on the wrist. Lastly prison are just a way to get free labor. That's why we have so many prisoners, not because we have so many awful people in the world. Our prison inmate rate rivals more in numbers than other countries because of this.
Technically, most of the people that are in jail for drug related crimes are not just there for that one thing. Most also have a robbery/burglary charge as well. They would go out and steal and rob people to feed their habits. They chose to do the crime, they do the time.
I'm an African who actually lives in Africa (which is NOT a country btw). I go out all the time just to find children begging for that sweet potato and those collard greens, and they haven't done anything wrong. This is ridiculous.

yeah, people really don't seem to understand that the point of prison isn't to punish people, it's to rehabilitate them. If all you do is punish them then they will still commit even more crimes when they are released. I don't remember the exact number right now, but the number of people who go back to prison after being released in the US is quite high compared to countries that focus more on rehabilitation than punishment.
usa has the highest incarceration rate AND return re-offending rate. in europe its rehabilitation and we have less prisoners and they dont return. scandinavia is running out of prisoners and crime, so theyre closing prisons.

The government has to provide food, jobs, shelter, staff, and other things prisoners don't pay for or don't pay all of. There's a very good reason the US which has less than 5% of the worlds population holds 23% of the worlds prison population.

No, but it's bad that what they show here is NOT an accurate representation of prison food. For breakfast where I was we got 1 hot hardboiled egg, half a canned pear, and 2 pieces of white bread (every day). For lunch 2 pieces of bread with 1 piece of bologna (every day). Dinner was always some mixed slop of "meat" with pasta half a pear and 2 pieces of bread. What they showed was some kids school lunch not prison food.
And that isn't a VEGAN option. You don't get options unless it's a religious problem. Like a lot of school lunches fish is substituted with a soy product that is supposed to taste the same. It's the easiest way to get around allergies. So when they say "fish or soy" it means you get one or the other not an option to pick.
This is not even close to the meals served in Ohio prison system. I have 17 years as CO. Ohio food service in the prison system is ran by a private company. Needless to say the food is so nasty. High carbs lots of rice, peanut butter and different kinds of beans. Most of the inmates survive on commissary.

There was half of an orange that had started going bad and the main course was this white sauce that literally looked like semen and had chunks of some mystery meat. As somebody who just did 5 years in prison, I can tell you that these meals are very similar except the portions. The meals in this video are probably 50% more food than regular prison meals.

You're right, I myself went to prison for something I didn't do. So I had a girlfriend, we were both in the same job. And she started to get jealous because I was doing better at the job than she was. Then one day she had enough, and she told the manager a made up story that I abused her. And then I was sent to court, she had fake witnesses, and they sentenced me to 6 years in prison.

I don't think anyone can really judge prison food and prison life until they've lived it. I get that "these are prisoners and they deserve it" and I know they shouldn't be given 5-star meals but if you treat someone less than human for YEARS, how are they going to be able to function in society when released? There are many prisons in Europe that are realizing the inhumane, brutal methods simply are not working. There is actually a lot of studies done which find that the better you treat a prisoner and work WITH THEM to resolve their underlining issues, the less chance they have of reoffending upon release.
Does everyone deserve special treatment? Hell no, there are some people who deserve to rot in prison. BUT, there are people who WILL be released and NEED to learn how to be an educated, well mannered, member of society. I'm not too concerned with how they're treated in prison, I'm concerned with how they will act upon being released so that more people do not get hurt or suffer due to an inadequate justice system.

Prison is not meant to rehabilitate and it never was. Getting locked up as a punishment for your crime. That's why it's called the penal system from the word penalty. It's not supposed to be like a mental insane asylum, even though that's exactly what it's become. Prison is nothing more than a kennel for humans. If you had any level of real life experience then you’d know that not everyone thats currently in prison or has been to prison can be considered criminals, and you’d also know that a lot of ex convicts are good people.

Just a fan fact: You know they actually used to give prisoners lobster? Lobster wasnt always a good meal, it was considered bad food, so they gave it to the prisoners. I personally think its nasty too.

Oh yes, lets serve these people the shitiest food ever made, that will definitely aid in changing their ways and help with mass rehabilitation. If you treatment them like animals their gonna come back into society even worse people. Prison should be incentive-based were they can get the chance to eat and live decent if they show true progress, don't gangbang, have weapons etc. You need to give them at least a hope with light at the end of the tunnel, only if they work for it, if you actually want them to change their behavior.

They're not there to be punished, or ridiculed, that would only separate them more from society and cause a lot of problems.. They're still human after all, no matter what they did, they made a mistake and for preventing another one from happening, they send the inmate to prison, so he can't commit another crime, and with time (not with punishment), people will learn, if no one tells them differently,

..... They're prisoners. In prison for a crime of some sort. Tax payers are paying to provide them with basic needs. They're lucky to get food and health care and shelter. Homeless people get less and they did nothing wrong. I personally don"t feel bad for them having food like this. It's they're fault they"re in there.....

xVAC4NTx trust me, I'm not the one who's paying the internet access. And trust me when I tell you that my lunch money is the equivalent of three dollars, that includes transport and whatever school supply the school needs.
Dropping the soap is a myth. I've been in prison and I've never seen someone get raped for dropping the soap. Instead the other inmates make fun of them, for example: "You dropped the soap!!! You gonna pick it up? Do you know how much sperm is in the floor" is what I've heard.

The laptop I use is covered on the left side by green and black marks because of the pixels dying. even my vacuum recently broke so I cant even properly clean my apartment. but hey im living and happy. I wish I could eat meals like that. everything I have in my life, im appreciative. Maybe these kids in this video could learn a lesson or two

That's pretty much what we get to eat at school. Except the prison food is better because they get a fruit drink but we get milk (10% milk, 90% water to water down the milk)
At university cafeterias in Bulgaria you get less than this. A bowl of soup of your choie (you have 3-4 options for the soup anyway), a main meal of your choice (another 3-4 options), a bun, and a dessert (it's either an apple or some gooey sweet cream). This costs 1 euro

girl ya need to calm down. I never said not a single innocent person went to jail and I never said they should be treated like slaves. I never even said i have never done anything wrong. The point is the percentage of innocent people in jail is actaully very low and having a 5 star meal just cause the possibility that one maybe one of them is innocent sounds ridiculous, You have to remember when you make a mistake clearly its wrong and there will be consequences to learn from that mistake. Not oh well all is okay it was an accident. Cause in the end they will do it again. You have to learn. Prison has food and a roof and a bed and toilet for you. If the food is terrible it is indeed cruel to force people to eat it constantly and just inhumane, so of course that's not ok. I was just talking about the food in the video which seems alright, i mean it may not taste great but it definitely isn't nasty(that's just my opinion, which may be wrong, i haven't actually tasted it, i only judged it by the way it looks)
Gregory Everson Also, I think prison also has to scare people. You need to be conscious that if you commit a time, you will have a hard time. Not torture or anything like that, it's not a dungeon. Your time there shouldn't be painful but it should be unpleasent enough to make you actively avoid it.

GalacticKutie but most of those ppl still have a record now for a petty crime or spent "a month" in jail for doing nothing. that record makes it hard to impossible to get a job let alone a reasonably paying job. so they end up back in jail either for doing another petty crime like stealing food. i'm from Chicago and the homeless here will commit petty crimes in the winter so they have a place to stay.
noelle livingston they don't always stay in prison for a "month" you don't send people to prison for a "month" that's why we have county jails. People are sent to prison for years for petty crimes. Marijuana is a huge cause ! If I'm correct than Marijuana is considered a class two drug but it's hardly any study's to prove it hinders a person as much as alcohol but we allow drunks to walk around with slaps on the wrist. Lastly prison are just a way to get free labor. That's why we have so many prisoners, not because we have so many awful people in the world. Our prison inmate rate rivals more in numbers than other countries because of this.

Technically, most of the people that are in jail for drug related crimes are not just there for that one thing. Most also have a robbery/burglary charge as well. They would go out and steal and rob people to feed their habits. They chose to do the crime, they do the time.

yeah, people really don't seem to understand that the point of prison isn't to punish people, it's to rehabilitate them. If all you do is punish them then they will still commit even more crimes when they are released. I don't remember the exact number right now, but the number of people who go back to prison after being released in the US is quite high compared to countries that focus more on rehabilitation than punishment.
usa has the highest incarceration rate AND return re-offending rate. in europe its rehabilitation and we have less prisoners and they dont return. scandinavia is running out of prisoners and crime, so theyre closing prisons.

The government has to provide food, jobs, shelter, staff, and other things prisoners don't pay for or don't pay all of. Less than $2.50 is expensive for a prison meal, if it's $1.00, that's 3 dollars a day for let's say 500 prisoners, $1,500 down the drain in ONE DAY!!! FOR ONE PRISON!!!
You are aware that practically EVERY federal and state prison is now privatelly owned in the US, and that they ALL turn incredible profits since @30% of ALL American made goods are either partially or completely manufactured by prison laborers? Over 70% of state inmates are incarcerated for possession or distribution of narcotics. Very few prisoners are murderers or rapists.
