- Thank you for watching my video on vauxhall / alfa romeo M23 gearbox common fault, where you have a loud whine in 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th gears.
here is links to your repair options but i would recommend a gearbox specialist

Fair enough shown the end case off but more than just bearing
This is all I hat time to do sorry
Great video. Subbed because if it. Did it cure his problem fully or did he still have a whine after from another bearing. Thanks
No whine by replacing this, it fixed the fault. Thank you for your support.
my old combo van had developed a whine when revved, regardless if clutch pressed or in gear driving. hoping its just the alternator.
Try removing the belt and running to see if the noise goes. I hope this helps
@@Martysworkshop it sound like 1 of those electric polish car buffers atm
Great video pal, do you think this is my issue? I was driving along and smelt burning nothing else no grinding etc and the looked under to see a hole in the sump and oil leaking out
When you say the sump do you mean the engine sump or transmission casting?
Thanks for the reply, I mean the outer casing I'll link a vid.

I see what you mean, behind that cover is the differential so not the shafts but what can happen is as it is the lowest point of the gearbox anything that is adrift in the gearbox can fall to that point and if it is big enough the crown wheel on the diff can push it through that cover, i would remove that cover and see if it is damaged from the inside or out, if the vehicle drives fine then i would say that i doubt it is one of these bearings as you would have a driving issue, if there is no clear damage on the inside then just replace or get it welded, refit with new sealant and replace oil. If there is damage the investigation inside the gearbox is needed. I hope this helps
@@Martysworkshop Thanks alot for that buddy, really helpful will take the cover off and have a look when i can.
Just go to royce transmissions of harlow they have all gearbox bearings fit new bearings it will be good as new😊
Thank you for your input
I'm going to be replacing the end bearings and fitting new modified bearings and case can this be done in situ and how do I work out what shims I use if at all
To do it properly the gearbox should be removed but i do know specialists that can do it in place, I'm unsure how you would shim it if I'm honest, thank you for watching
I have a 1.9 cdti 120bhp. Stiff gear change but it's exactly the same with the engine off. Is this likely to be the box or the linkages
Could be ether you would need to disconnect the cables/ rods at the gearbox and you would be able to feel witch is stiff, hope this helps
Thanks pro
Thank you for watching
Hi mate, cheers for the video.
How many hours did it take to do the job?
Not long i has it striped in less than an hour, all in all i would say about 3-4 hours depending how careful you are cutting the old bearing off, thank you for watching
How did you manage to put back the end case in Situ?
Do all the shafts and gears mesh together for the end case to fit back on?
The shafts stay in place to replace these bearings so no need to re mech
Cheers thanks 👍🏻
I have an insignia 2014 diesel, slight whine in 2nd and 4th and really tight to engage 2nd when cold could this be a similar issue? The whine is mainly decelerating when completely off the throttle
Possibly, this vehicle did it in 1st 2nd 5th and 6th so I'm not sure if you have the same fault sorry, thank you for watching
How did you removed the Allen key bolt on the shaft?
Hello matt, I only replaced the lower bering witch I believe the alen key bolt is on the input shift, but I wound hold the cluster with a rag and use my rattle gun to remove, hope this helps.
My astra h VXR is making a whining noise only when releasing the clutch in 1st gear and also sometimes it gets stuck and doesn’t go into 1st and 2nd gear fully in which case I have to put it back into neutral and try putting it in gear again( most times it goes into gear after).
I put in a new clutch kit about a year and half ago because the clutch was slipping. The mechanic did tell me that my flywheel needed to be changed also but I didn’t change it at the time.
So, I was wondering whether the whining noise I’m getting when I’m releasing the clutch in first gear is it the flywheel or is it the gearbox.
I have had multiple mechanic look at the car and some are saying it is the synchro and needs a gearbox rebuild however some are saying it could be just the flywheel.
Do you have any idea on what it could?
Hello, my honest opinion is that i have never had a flywheel cause a whine usually the flywheel goes off balance due to excessive wear causing a vibration or possible knocking noise, the fact that you have a gear engagement fault tells me you have an internal gearbox fault so i would point you towards that I'm afraid hope this helps
My vauxhall vectra has the F17 gearbox do they suffer with same issue
Not sure. Sorry, I only saw it with this one. Thank you for watching.
How much would it be to have this done do you think
I'm not sure sorry,
Thanks for a great video. My problem is that I can not put in gear number five and six in my Zafira 1,9 CDTI. What could the problem be??
Thank you for your comment, well does it grind or does the stick just stop dead???
@@Martysworkshop Thanks for reply :) Well, I can move the stick all the way to the right, but then it is impossible to move it up to five or down to six gear, it is stuck. All other gears are working ok. I had a shop looking at it, but they just sad "you need to buy a new gear box"...
Its sounds to me like a selector issue as 5th and 6th gears use the same selector inside the gearbox, i would take it to a gearbox specialist as they shuld be able the remove the selector with the gearbox in place and repair, as you can see with the casing removed you can see all the selectors.
@@Martysworkshop Many, many thanks for your good advise. I will post you an update :) Best regards//Magnus
Yes please update me i would love to find out how you get on, thank you for sharing
Gearbox crunches changing gear gearstick has movement lifting the clutch and the gearstick moves back and forth on the power . I also get a whirring whining sound in 5th gear any ideas gear cables and gear oil where changed last year
Cheak engine Mount's, but if gearbox is whineing, then may need a rebuild.
I have an insigna 1.8 petrol and it is grinding when trying to get it into 3rd, and then when you slow down it will jump out of 3rd. I'm now driving the car basically from 2nd to 4th skipping 3rd it's that bad! What do you think is the issue?
It's a 10 plate, with the 6 speed box.
Your fault sounds like the 3rd gear synchro has failed and caused wear on the dog teeth witch would explain why it is grinding and jumping out of gear, gearbox needs to be striped I'm afraid. Thank you for watching
@@Martysworkshop nightmare! Thanks for the response though. Do you think it's a full gearbox off job or could it be done in situ by just taking the end casing off?
I'm not sure but this is a gearbox that has a lot of common faults so give your local gearbox centre a call and they should know.
Hi mate I have a vouxhall insignia petrol and the problem I have is when I put it in gear and start to drive the gear lever moves back and forwards is manual gear box. Do u know what that is?
Does it go forward and back as you press then release the throttle?
@@Martysworkshop yes or when I release the clutch when 8ts get to bitting point it does to but when I release the clutch very gently it doesent do it to much
Have you checked the engine mounts
@@Martysworkshop I have not checked all but I replaced the gear box mount and the problem still there . Do u think is a good chance for it to be engine mount?? Not the gear box it self.?? Thx for ur reply mate.??
Cheak the lower engine mount, thats the one that usually goes, it will be under the car connecting the gearbox/ engine to the subframe
Mines opposite. 3rd and 4th.
Probably find the other countershaft bearing has gone in that case. Thank you for watching.
Hi
Did you manage to change the bearings described in the video with the gearbox in place ?
Kind regards
Andrew
Yes I cut the inner race off the shaft and removed the outer race out of the casing
@@Martysworkshop hi mate wondering if you could give a little info, can you use a bearing puller to get the bearing off the shafts in situ and what's the best way to get the races out of the casing? Tool recommended?
Well the bearing race broke in the one I did so came out easy, I would use a small heal bar if it was tight, and as for the bearing, I bought a puller but couldn't get it to grip to it so cut it off.
@@Martysworkshop my son in laws 08 astra is making a racket in 6th but he don't have the money for a recon so I'm going down this route first, am I right thinking the Allen bolt on the end of the shafts is on the inside of the gearbox and there's no bolt on the ends of the 3 shafts seen in your video? And would you recommend flushing the box after with some cheap oil then filling up with something better ? Thanks for the replys, also if I wanted to drop the box out completely would just undoing the one side of the sub frame give me enough room to get it out or does the whole frame need to be dropped?
I'm not sure sorry as it has been a while since I did a clutch on an astra, altho this is a large box so probably need to remove sub frame tbh, and yes lower shaft bearing comes straight off but if your removeing the gearbox you can lie it on the bell houseing side and strip it alot easier tbh you might need to remove the other 2 shafts tho hold them to remove the alen bolts.
Forgot to add there is a constant noise from the gearbox that go's away when the clutch is pressed
replied
Got a Vauxhall Astra j 2.0 Sri Cdti gearbox just shit it’s self will this be same issue
Do you have the symptoms explained in the video??
@@Martysworkshop thanks for the reply tba it’s been driving fine until my missis herd a grinding noise next thing you know we are losing gearbox oil we had lots of metal shards and chunks on drip try took it to a garage told me it was £800 not including parts needed was going to scrap it but I’d sooner try getting case off just to look but it’s ether f-40 or m32 gearbox on there
When this bearing collapses it doesent usually puncture the casing but it is possible, you would need to see the hole is to determine weather it is or not. Was the garage you took it to a gearbox specialist? As in my experience normal garages don't want the hassle so tend to overprice the job.
Hi mate, just came across your video now, my m32 gearbox is jumping out of 4th gear, it only jumps out when I accelerate, there is no gearstick movement in any gear or any whining noises, do I need bearings or something else ?
I would say it is your syncro hub dog teeth, as if it was the bearing the gearstick would be sloppy in at least 2 gears.
@@Martysworkshop thanks for replying mate, is that an easier repair than the bearings?
Its a full strip down I'm afraid and it would be better to remove the gearbox to strip down
Mine not whines, but 6th gear pops out very easy, you can see the 5th engaged and the knob moves a lot, but in 6th I can't keep it engaged more than 5 seconds, if I try to keep it engaged pushing with my hand the knob u can feel a knock knock... Full gearbox replacement then ?
Thank you for watching, If its just jumping out of gear then your selector hub or the gear dog teeth are probably gone so you will need the shafts removed and striped, a rebuild would be pricy so cheaper to just get a replacement box
@@Martysworkshop thank you from spain for your recommendations!
I was able to do the same thing on my 2013 chevrolet cruze but i want to know, how did you remove the old and installed the new bearing? Did you have to remove the whole shaft or you were able "in situ" too?
Just to add, i have the upgraded casing and bearings on it and i seem to have the same problem, distinctive whine in 5th and 6th gear. Problem started at about 80000km...
Hello and thank you for watching, i actually bought a puller to clamp and remove the bearing inner race of the shaft in situ but it kept slipping off so i had to use a 1mm cutting disk on a grinder to cut a flat on the race as close as i could to the shaft then i split the race with a sharp chisel. Had your bearing collapsed then?
@@Martysworkshop not yet, still "solid" with some wear marks but I'm no expert. Maybe the culprit is the bearing at the other end of the shaft since I have the upgraded casing? Check this ua-cam.com/video/NSp8v6s0Y4g/v-deo.html
Yes quite possibly the other bearing, that looks ok in the video usually the outer race is where you should see the signs of wear though.
How difficult is it to replace end case bearing in situ...guessing need puller for bearing removal and u big socket to install new bearings...my car isnt worth spending vast amounts of money on but if i can do a cheapish fix to get another year out car will be happy
I bought a bearing puller and it was a wast of time as there is no lip for the puller to grab to pull it off, so i cut through the bearing race on the shift to remove, and used a small heal bar to remove the race in the casing. Then taped the new bearing into Place with a small punch. Thank you for watching
@@Martysworkshop thanks for info mate
hi just a quick one my zafira has the same issue how did you remove the bearing its self did you have to take the shaft out hoping to give it a shot myself as it only just started a few days ago.thanks
I replaced the bearing with the shafts in place, i just cut the inner race off the shaft and knocked the bearing on in place. i have put a link to the bearings in the description for this video hope thus helps
@@Martysworkshop ok great.thanks for the fast reply
@@tom_ov_duki i did not need to remove the shafts end bolt as i only replaced the lower bearing as this is the bearing that suffers with this comon fault, i believe there is a clip then you can cut the bearing race off
@@Martysworkshop hi pal i finally got round to doing my bearing i have got the old bearing off but i am having trouble getting the new one on could you tell me what you used to knock the new bearing on cheers for your help
I'm sure i just taped it on with a socket or a punch, it was a while ago but belive it wasn't too difficult to do in my memory just make sure you hold pressure on the gear cluster to hold it all the way in
@martysworkshop would it be cheaper to replace box or get the bearing bud?
Depends, a new gearbox would cost more than this car is worth, and a second had gearbox could drop the same bearing 6 months down the road so replacing the bearings is the cheapest and most practical way forward in my opinion. Thank you for your quietion
Thank you for your comment
Have gear stick movement in 1st when pulling off and gear stick movement in 3rd and 4th gear the car was crashed before I had to replace radiator and front crash bar I had a look at one engine mount on top and one underneath seems to be okay I can't see the other engine mount under the battery until I get the tools to remove a few bits that's the side that got the bang, I'm wondering if the top engine mount if it's damaged would put pressure on the linkages and cause the gear stick to move when driving I'm not a mechanic just looking for some advice 2010 zafira 1.7 cdti
If the noise from the gearbox is a chatter then it is a clutch release bearing not the actual gearbox, know as for the gear stick moving does your vehicle have gear cables or a mechanical linkage because if you have gear cables you shouldn't get any movement through the stick even if the mounts are worn, if you have this type of gearbox i would strongly recomend you drop the gearbox oil and check for meatal filings as this is a really common fault and you might catch it early if it is your problem, thank you for your feedback and i hope i helped
@@Martysworkshop thanks Marty,it's like a constant whine rather than a chatter which go's away when the clutch is pressed I'm not sure about the linkage I will have a look tomorrow thanks again mate
Is the whine when you are in motion or moving along the road?
@@Martysworkshop thanks mart no whine when driving just a constant sound from the gearbox I know this might sound stupid but it's like white noise you know like the sound from your t.v. when your setting it up for the first searching for channels
Does the noise change pitch as you change gears or does it get louder as the speed of the vehicle increases?
