You can probably use kids pointed party hats as a base structure and leave it there (unlike cones) and wrap the yarn around it. The hats can be painted and punched in with holes to let light peak through.
I don't think the glue was the problem ❤I've made yarn trees using about 90% glue with 10% water and it turned out great! They do take 3 days to fully dry though. BUT I do prefer mod podge instead of Elmer's because it dries completely solid. The Elmer's glue works okay, but the trees are slightly pliable; if I stepped on it I would squish the shape and not crack the tree. My trees felt dry after 24 hrs, but if you wait until the yarn is hard enough where you can literally drop the trees on the ground and they hold their shape they look best.. I took one off the mold after a day and it didn't keep it's perfect cone shape.
Yes, it was your ratio of glue to water. I use almost pure glue with a splash of water. But I like the idea of using the dollar tree cones as a form. 😀
@@StephanieGraska, I always add the corn starch in when I stiffen my crochet projects. I’m not sure what it does exactly but I do know it definitely makes a much stiffer final project
Yeah I was going to say the same thing, I wondered if wallpaper paste would do the same? We used to use that for paper mache when I was a kid and that was seriously solid!
One of your main issues is you’re using a washable glue, which when diluted with too much water loses all stickiness. Try four parts glue to one part water, or even slightly less water, and you’ll see much better results. Or a stronger glue. Haha
Hi Drew, I am 76 years old and I love all your films! I live in England and am always envious about your amazing thrift stores! I made these christmas trees with yarn last year and I have a much simpler way: Brush the cone with PVA glue then wrap the yarn and cover it in glue again. Let dry and take it off! So no messy hands! Happy Christmas!
Try this again, but use more school glue less water. It’s such a cute idea. I am have been making wreaths for my elderly neighbors and needed something to do with the shopping bag filled with pine cones my Grandnieces have collected. Definitely making the pine cones wreath.
I'm always so impressed to see how many affordable ideas and options Drew shows us. Like it's not just a once in a blue moon thing- there's regular content that is so helpful for people who don't have a lot of money. AND IT'S ALL ACTUALLY FRIKKIN CUTE!!! 💕
That pine cone wreath and tree pillow are to diiiiieee for! I love how a lot of your holiday stuff can work after the holidays! You could even get some felt and cut out anything else and make whatever pillow your heart desires!
Love the pine cone wreath! I also appreciate that you included the yarn trees that did not turn out quite how you were hoping. It is admirable that you are willing to share a project that didn't turn out as you'd planned. Thank you for your courage and sharing your creativity and art with us.
Love these!! For the Christmas trees, my grandma was literally just today telling me about this old fashioned ornament trick where people would crochet ornaments and then sip or coat them in starch, which would stiffen them and allow them to hold their shape- so that might be worth a try! :)
Yes, I crocheted snowflakes for my tree and then dipped them in starch. They held up for about 25 years before I had to starch them again! And I still have them.
Love these DIYs. I can't wait to make the pine cone wreath, it came out SO good! Regarding your trees thank you so much for sharing your fail. Glad to know that even you have DIY fails. I agree mixing up the material to something for firm as well as using a better glue should work better. I did something similar a few years ago using a wire and the tree came out so beautiful but it didn't like sitting straight so having a good base is important. Also, it seems like there were thin areas where the yarn didn't overlap as much as others which caused it to fall over. Maybe try having the trees more full to give it structure. If you want to have sparse yarn areas you could give it a wire base to give it the structure it needs. Once you add the light you will still see the holes even if they are small, I can't wait to try this DIY though I feel like the idea is solid.
So I think your issue with the third project would be the “school” glue as school glue is made to wash away with water for children doing crafts. Mixing it with water wil likely not create a strong bond.
I made a yarn cone tree using a children's party hat that I painted white so those bright colors didnt show through and hot glue. I wrapped the cone hat in a fuzzy white yarn and using hot glue as needed to hold on first layer of wrapping and then did a second and third layer to make mine thicker and then using a spray adhesive I sprayed my tree and poured glitter over it. Turned out beautiful and plenty firm because of the support of that party hat. I also made another one and after finishing the yarn wrapping added party beads I clipped apart as ornaments and then frosted with spray adhesive and a light layer of fake snow. Love both!
Love your videos! Tip for the string lantern: people typically paint a layer of that glue mixture on top of the string shape once it's been wrapped around the object, in addition to dipping it in glue prior to wrapping. So two rounds of glue. It just cements the strings together on top of each other better. Also, it may be worth it to have more rounds of string at the bottom for a stronger base. Also, as you suggested a better glue or thicker consistency may help. Thanks for sharing Lone Fox!
I loved that you still included the project that didn't work out, it just makes it so much more real and fun to watch honestly! Thank you for sharing :)
The Holiday DIYs are my fav! Yes, you're right this is your jam! I saw your vision with the string. I think you're right with the glue. Maybe mix the glue with laundry starch?
Great ideas!! I use the Mod Podge hard coat, in the purple bottle, to stiffen my yarns and such. I do not dilute it. I'm going to try those string trees with that method bc I think those are so cute and have so many possibilities!! I just adore u Drew! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
When using resin you should always use gloves and a respirator. You can develop allergies super fast from resin. Your projects did turn out lovely, except for the trees. 😞 I think you're right about the glue.
Yes! Everyone is allergic to it. As soon as you have a reaction, you will be super sensitive to it. (IIRC it's cumulative as well & that your very first exposure may mean you have a sensitive reaction in the future) You need ventilation, a respirator, gloves, goggles, sleeves, minimum skin contact, etc. Even "Non-toxic" resin just means non-toxic AFTER it's cured, but sanding or heating cured resin is dangerous too.
In Germany we use wallpaper paste for things like your failed projects! In kindergarten we used to plaster balloons with newspaper lol. Don’t even know why. But it works
Love ALL of these DIYs!! I’m here for the ornaments and pillows!!! For the trees- it isn’t the glue, it was the water amount! I would do a 90/10% or 80/20% ratio where the water is smallest number. Also coat the trees with the mixture after finished and dry for like FOREVER!
I just loved the yarn part, especially since nowadays there are so many people out there that only show things that are always perfect Instagram-Pinterest like, when in real life it is not, and it is important to show this part too, especially to the youngest who attach so much importance to everything they see on the internet and assume a virtual reality that does not fit in with their lives in reality and become depressed. So thank you very much for your honesty and humility, I really appreciate that you didn't remove that part of the video. Merry Christmas!
Honestly you make some of the most polished-looking yet accessivle diys I have seen on UA-cam. I’m always amazed by how stylish and professional your projects look in the end. Great job!
For the yarn tree, I think it could have done with some support. Coiling it around the cone kind of gives it a slinky effect without the cones. Maybe laying a first layer with a vertical yarn base, or even using some popsicle/skewer sticks for support underneath might help, as well as stronger glue. Awesome DIY video, as usual! Love that you include the “fails.” That’s how we learn, after all :)
This is why I love you, you show the DIY fails. Not everything is going to come out perfect every time ☺️ I attempted to do some resin coasters and my first try was not so great...I attempted it again and they came out beautifully❣️❣️❣️
for the yarn project i recommend using starch. i have never used starch before so i have no idea how to use it, but my mum always uses it for hardening crocheted angels, stars and other decor for decorating our christmas tree.

My daughter did a similar project at school and recommends using water, flour and glue for the yarn trees. It will add the stiffness needed to keep their form.
These were so cute!! I really thought the pillow was going to look tacky but it ended up being the perfect amount of a cozy handmade feel. I think spray starch would help with the tree diy - I’ve used it to make crocheted ornaments stiff.
Love that you shared your fail instead of pretending everything always works out perfectly! I suggest trying different base such as an ice cream cone or a cardboard cone. Also, I would try a stronger glue and try letting it dry longer!

You have such a great holiday aesthetic.......mod podge instead of glue...if your yarn is polyester....change to wool so that it soaks in the liquid...polyester yarn repels liquid glue. You can also make mod podge yarn over small balloons to create tree ornaments.
The epoxy decorations, wow beautiful. The wreath is so much more than it cost you to make, looks way more expensive. Love it The cushion is fresh fun a nd super cute.
The pinecone wreath is lovely...very classic Christmas. DIY-ing a wreath like this would be very cost effective, I could easily forage the pinecones when I go for a walk. :) I also love the resin ornaments and stocking hanger...both materials I have not used before in crafting (resin and concrete) but I think that is going to change this year! I came here from Emily Faith's video btw.
I recommend liquid starch!!! You can buy it at Walmart in a big jug. I’ve made similar trees over foam cones but with embroidery floss so it’s not to heavy.
I would try wallpaper paste for the yarn trees, that usually hardens pretty well. You can create lampshades out of yarn with it, so I think it should work on the trees as well.
I think more glue than water might help the trees too, to maybe give them a little more stability once they’re off the cone. Love these ideas, especially that little fox stocking holder!! So stinking cute!!
Love that you included the project that didn’t turn out perfectly, we can all learn from mistakes!
Right? I love that. Otherwise I think: Why I‘m the only one with fails?

I would try wallpaper paste for the yarn trees, that usually hardens pretty well. You can create lampshades out of yarn with it, so I think it should work on the trees as well.
