    Any chance a wheel bearing replacement video might happen in the future? Your videos are practical examples and easy to follow. Admittedly it's a selfish request because I need to do mine before next season, Michigan winter is here!

      Yep I I'm going to be replacing wheel bearings on a up coming project but can't give a time frame yet. There easy to do. I believe it will be before the spring up there. Thanks for watching

    A little update with my Main Drive Gear outer bearing and seal. I cut a piece of pipe, ground down the threads and cut to an inch and a half length. This pipe fits in the 5th gear opening, and slides over the mainshaft. I slipped that to the bearing, put the belt sprocket nut on, slipped the sleeve on from the race installation tool. I put an 8 inch 3 jaw puller with the 3 jaws on the belt sprocket nut, and the thrust part on washers at the end of the race installation tool. I tightened the tool, pulling against the belt sprocket nut, that pushed the bearing into the main drive gear. That gave me clearance to install the oil seal. I used the race installation tool and tapped the seal lightly into place.
    Maybe the bearing will walk out again, we'll see. But everything turns smoothly.

    Hey there!! I hope all is well by you!! I have my 85 FXRS all apart (well inner primary off!) Tapered and keyed mainshaft. I am trying to get my 5th gear seal in. It looks like there is not enough room in the recess to seat the 5th gear seal. I did that trick you showed loosening the nut on the other side of the shaft and tapping it to be able to put the race puller on the race. Tightened it hand tight, I know it gets torqued 27-33 foot pounds, tapped the shaft back. My problem is I can't get the 5th gear seal to seat. Just checking, the seal seats with the metal side out ? Is there a chance the bearing walked out to take away room for the 5th gear seal? Is there a way to tap them back or the shaft to get more room in there? The old seal was just hanging when I removed the race. Thanks !

      Sorry to hear your having a problem, removing and replacing the 5th gear seal on the bike is a giant pain in the ass. If the old 5th gear seal was hanging out when you took it apart chances are the bearing itself is not seated and has walked out and pushed the 5th gear seal out. If this is the case the bearing is shot and needs to be replaced. There is no way to seat the bearing while the gear set is in the trans. This is a very unusual condition. This usually only happens when the bearings have been replaced and haven't been properly installed.
      But from what you've told me that's what it sounds like. I wish I had something more positive to tell you, but that's the only time I've seen this happen. Hope this helps.

    Jackshaft large bering /coupling c clip facing in to starter or out to primary cover

    • @tinkeringwithharleys
      @tinkeringwithharleys  Рік тому

      Thanks for the question, I'm guessing you're asking about the c clip behind the drive gear. If this is the case the large coupler goes over the jackshaft, than retaining ring than the spring than pinion gear. All face the primary. If you're talking about the long coupler the retaining ring faces the starter. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    I suspect my 5th gear seal is leaking 😢 I've completely rebuilt the entire transmission and the seals and put about 1000 leak free miles on it then out of the blue i had a small leak and was dripping on top on my rear shock. Luckily I run Red line shockproof gear oil so I know for certain it's from my transmission (it's red). So.. I replaced the Main shaft seal and quad last month and rode it for about a month and was leak free. Today I saw another leak. What a PITA job... This time I wanna replace the 5th gear seal just for peace of mind which I should have done last time but didn't only because it's the most challenging one to change.

    • @tinkeringwithharleys
      @tinkeringwithharleys  Рік тому +1

      That it is. The last couple I did the trans was outa the bike, so I just slipped the gear set out and put the 5th gear seal in with that tool I have.

    I'm going to hook a barb to my transmission vent hose and pressurize my transmission with very low pressure air and spray the 2 seals with some dawn soap to eliminate which seal is leaking.

      @tinkeringwithharleys  Рік тому +1

      Good idea that will tell you wether it's the 5th gear seal or not.

    I need to invest in a larger pair of snap ring pliers for that large final drive bearing. PITA to get out without having the proper size pair of pliers. Using a screwdriver to assist in its removal works but still...

    • @tinkeringwithharleys
      @tinkeringwithharleys  Рік тому +2

      Yep that snap ring is a pain to get in and out without a snap ring plier. The one I use is made by Channel Loc it's 8 or 9 inch handle and has interchangeable ends so you can use it on almost any snap rings except the small ones like the pawl shifter snap ring. I could it on Amazon and it was a pretty reasonable price. They work great.

      Have you noticed how much Cycle Electric wants for their 3 phase charging systems nowadays? Absolutely ridiculous....
      I understand that they're the best in the industry but come on man! I just opted for a new regulator in lieu of an upgraded charging system. I can't afford a $600 system

    • @tinkeringwithharleys
      @tinkeringwithharleys  Рік тому +1

      Yep the more bikes depend on computerized electronics the more expensive it gets. The sad thing about the technical age is it eliminates true mechanics over time. Everything plugs into a computer to diagnose engine problems. The Harley dealer here won't take in carbureted bikes anymore cause nobody knows how to work on them. The new bikes are over priced rolling computers. I truly miss the old days with old prices

      I have 2 projects that I'm gonna be doing here shortly, my son's 08 Fatboy he wants to turn into a bagger which will be a first for me. Gonna strip it down to the frame and build it from there. The 2nd I have a 91 Evo motor that I'm gonna build a bike around it. Gonna keep it old school and use it for my show off bike when it's done. I gotta do it before I get to old that I can't do this anymore.
