TINTIN: 9 Tiny Books in a Tiny Box of Facsimiles!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- I recently found a box set of Tintin albums in a most unusual format - tiny, pocket-sized facsimile editions of the original nine Tintin adventures by Herge. These black-and-white, hardcover, French-language books, and the lovely longcase they're housed in, is explored in this video, which really works as an unboxing too. But first I regale you with how and why I almost didn't buy this set, as well as the stunning logic I used to change my own mind. I hope you enjoy this ramble through a box that I hope doesn't start a new trend in my collecting!

I appreciate to see a Tintin "Franco-Belge" comic-book fan in a US Comics part :-)
I like your videos because I success to understand you even if my English is not perfect, and you propose a really interesting not common comic book: foreign comic-book.
Tintin is our cult comic, it's too bad that you don't read French, the CAPITAINE HADDOCK dialogue are the must :-)
Bonne continuation !
Thank you so much! I’m going to be on the lookout for some original Haddock vocabulary in these editions now! 😀
I love the old tintin books
Nice! I've been reading Tintin for over 50 years, and I've never seen these.
Thank you!
Do you know the the full size facsimiles with English translations? Here's the mini playlist of the ones I have spotlighted: ua-cam.com/play/PLf2B7UoR9NKWyI-w-6f2ifLKMNsDbTGsx.html if you're interested!
Wow this is gorgeous. It has somewhat of a collector's item vibe to it or would even make for a great gift item. Those small books are very cute.
Yes I can quite imagine this being marketed as a collector’s item. For me, it presented a surprisingly affordable and creative way to finally read all of the original black and white stories.
Quality videos man! Keep doing it for the love of comics and this channel will continue to grow!!
Thanks so much! 😀
Glad you are back ! I was missing the usual style and break down that your regular videos provide!
Thank you, and it’s good to be back. While I liked trying some new things and styles of video while on holiday, I like digging into things and my setup at home lets me do that more easily. The only downside is the heat in the room where I shoot (no AC!) 😕
Pure form Tintin is a must.
I didn't always feel that way - when I was young and foolish, I thought the idea of non-smooth, polished and colour Tintins were of no interest to me. Luckily, I wised up! =)
Loved the video ! Great to have tintin real fan all around the world
Thank you! And yes, Tintin is beloved all over the world, quite remarkable for something as 'old' as it is.
i love the way you use your words.. its so direct and specific ;)
Thank you, I try 😁! Glad you liked this video and hope you enjoy more here on this channel !
I had no idea that this box set existed till I came across your channel. Since that day I felt like I must get myself this box set, being a huge huge fan of Tintin. Today finally I got it , thanks to my brother in law who was travelling to Kolkata from US. Thanks for letting us know about this beauty. As without your post , I doubt I would have even known about this box set.
That's great to hear! It really is a little treasure for Tintin fans, even more so if you read French! 😁
Nice to see again!!! And pleasantly surprised to see a non-english boxset of Tintin. Not that actually, I wouldn't like to see that particular edition in english or my native language, but definitely a must to own. I've some of them in the original format, but unfortunately I've wasn't able to complete the b&W editions. A nice addition to your collection. And hoping to see other videos of your recent acquisitions as soon as possible
Thank you! And yes, I found this set too charming to resist! 😀 , not to mention it was the only way I could see myself completing the B&W collection. New videos coming soon!
Love your videos, man! Keep 'em coming.
Thank you, that’s much appreciated. I absolutely plan to keep the videos coming! 😀
I love TinTin. As a child I used to chamfer babies rattles before they went to the church to be sworn in. I did all this dressed as TinTin but with massive clown shoes and a motorised bow tie.
How absolutely lovely!
At last somebody in India who has come upon something like this like comics channels in UA-cam, which we used to see only in US or other country , i really appreciate your approach in UA-cam and lots lots of congratulations to you, like u i am also a big fan tintin and other comics. Now its seems that there are more crazy people in India like me who really love comics, once again congratulations, hope your and our journey towards comics will be pleasent and enjoyable in future. To my another crazy friend who loves comics like me, cheers and kudos
Thank you so very much for your enthusiastic and heartwarming support! There are many of us united by our love of comics here in India and across the world and I'm thrilled that this channel helps, in some tiny way, connecting some of us. Welcome to the channel and I hope you find a lot to enjoy!
@@ftloc yes i am happy to join, and do give some reviews to some great comics artist like will eisner, herge, andre franquine, gosciny uderzo, Jaques tardi, jack Kirby, john buscema, neal adams, gil kane, sr john romita, john byrne, steve ditko, wally wood, alex nino, bernie wrighston, joe kubert, AL williamson, hal foster, sergio toppi, sean murphy, skottie young are some of them who are best in there field and also gave best and extraordinary artwork in comics
My favourite was red rackms treasure and affair culis
Damn it!!...you find the best Tintin collections!... Glad the wavy hands in front of bookshelves is back.😂😜
Got to give the audience what they want! 😀
Isn’t this set a beauty? Now to see if I can compare some editions!
Love your videos...Keep posting❤
Thank you! Will do!😁
Loved the video
Thank you! And re: the French, it’s not that hard. Especially if you have an English translation right next to it! 😀
Like Spanish, there’s the logical idea of putting nouns before adjectives, and more...
@@ftloc Oh would you look at that, and now I'm learning French!

C'était le destin!
In the background on your shelf I see complete peanuts ( Sunday ) 1950s and 1960s!
Good eye! Unfortunately, that's the 50s and the *70s* box sets because I was unable to get the 60s one. I talk about that a little bit in this 'new acquisitions' video: ua-cam.com/video/3sV0I2akLMY/v-deo.html , in case you're interested! Cheers!
I didn’t know that Thanks 👍
Cool video. I had no idea Tin Tin was originally published in Black and White...that must have made for a very different experience, give the line art style.
Yes, the first nine adventures were originally published in black and white. As Herge's style evolved, the earliest books were later redrawn (often by collaborators under Herge's supervision as part of his Studio) and shortened and coloured. The books also switched to a 64 page format, so the earlier ones were also 'shortened' in different ways. All in all, they represent quite striking variations on the more popular and common editions.
great video. need to grab this!
It's such a great little set, I hope you get to snag a copy! 😁
Woow, these bring back a lot of childhood memories, even I have the French version of the Tintin Au Congo, which was apparently banned due to being racist.
Appreciate your dedication to collecting the French versions 😍
This was supposed to be an exception because they were hard to resist, but the more French editions I see, the more I am tempted! 😁
What a beautiful edition! I love the bigger books, but these mini volumes look absolutely stunning! Great talk on this, I can listen for hours as you propound and praise our beloved medium of comics. I have one question, though. What else do read, other than comics? You seem very well read and are very cultured in your mannerisms and explanations. Ok, cheers from Vancouver, Canada.
Haha thank you for the high (and undeserved) praise! I too love these little editions in spite of thinking the full sized albums (or even larger!) are usually the way to go. As for what else I read, I generally read prose fiction and nonfiction as well. I used to read a lot more prose fiction - these days it seems that most of my prose reading is nonfiction/reportage/analysis whereas most of my fiction reading is in comics. There's some longer answers buried in my Q and A videos I think, so I'll spare you the rambling discussion on why over here! 😁
@@ftloc Thx, good sir! I will check out the Q and A vids..I've already watched a few. Cheers and take care.
Excellent as always. Out of curiosity, do these tiny versions have those 1 page color illustrations like the 'big' version of them?
Sorry I'm only seeing this now - for some reason it got buried in my notifications!
Unfortunately, no, these do not contain those full page colour plates.
Either that was a production/cost choice (to keep it entirely black and white) or those plates were not part of the original French albums these are facsimiles of.
I should try and find out more now that you've brought this up!
I learn Spanish - I want to learn French as well, because I have a Tintin in the Congo in French (from the Hergé museum in France).
NIce job! Yes, this is a great way to learn a new language
Hello, I want to say something please don't mind... "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" has its own coloured version. It was actually done by Moulinsart, although Casterman did an individual coloured version of it. Casterman's version is not very popular and there is only French version of it while there are English and French coloured versions done by Moulinsart and are also probably available in other languages as well.
Ah, I knew of the French one but not the English one. Is that a new edition or has it been around for a while?
@@ftloc ua-cam.com/video/KZmXqHZho-s/v-deo.html The English version was probably released in 2017-2018.
Very nice set, I can't read French, but could very well imagine picking up this set as a collector's item. You think there will be more books in additional sets released?
I think this particular type of set will be the only one of its kind because it was the first 9 books, collected here, that were originally published in black and white. The others were also not redrawn by collaborators as heavily. Still, if we stray into French language publications, Casterman often has great facsimiles of different kinds, so their web site should always be worth a visit! So glad you liked the video! 😁
Have you done the comparisons for the last 4 yet? If not, really looking forward to it! :)
Not yet, but they will inevitably happen. I like to spread out my Tintin edition comparison videos because what will I do once I'm done with them? 😋
Damn it, this is beautiful! Me wants. Non, J'en ai besoin!!
I love your vocab.
Thank you! 😁
Have been looking to get tintin and I see the red hardcover is going for 3999 on FK is it worth or get the tin tin on moon any print differences?
Which red hardcover do you mean? Have you checked out this video on the moon bindup? ua-cam.com/video/wgIFpZ1WdsE/v-deo.html
That seems like a high price for the bindup, check on Bookswagon or amazon.?
Wow, those are tiny. Definitely not the best choice if you're reading Tintin for the first time (whether you know French or not), but makes for a neat collectors' item.
Oh yes, I doubt this would make a great first time read, but I’ll give it a test to see how bad (or not bad) it actually is! 😀
I really need to get into TinTin
Give it a shot and see what you think. There's definitely a lot of nostalgia attached for someone like me, but I have found it to hold up as a series of adventures quite well!
If you want to go with a chronological read, skip the first 3 and start with Cigars of the Pharoah.
@@kurtosis4573 Thx for tip!
Woah, it's pretty priceless for me. Wish i could pick up something like this in India. It's certainly worth buying imo but i might be baised since I'm a huge Tintin nerd. I am looking forward for comparison videos. Also, there is a coloured version of Soviets in French. It's available in digital format in English via Tintin app. There is also a version of Land of the black gold which was published after black island and abandoned when WW2 started. There is quite a few difference between that and the Land of black gold we know. Also, have you read other Herge works such as Jo Zette and Jocko or Quick and Flupke?
Thanks and I think I agree - this is a great little box and I am glad I picked it up! 😀.
I’d love to take a look at the ‘original’ Land of Black Gold as well as the colour Soviets! Is the Land of Black Gold also available through the app?
For the Love of Comics I don't think the Original land of black gold is available through the app. It was only ever published in news paper. It was set in British Palestine which was later changed to Khemed in the newer version. I have only seen web articles about it with some scans of it in French.
Also, if you have an ipad or an iPhone, the app also contains free supplimentary material for each book which contains lot of history and context with great illustrations from book. It contains travel dairies, some dossiers and other supplimentary materials if you download the sample of each book.
Would love to get one of these but apparently they are all sold out on Amazon DE, do you btw have the adventures of Joe, Zette and Jocko. There is a dual edition adventure that is only available in German published by carlsen called "die Manitoba antwortet nicht" and "Der ausbruch des Karamako"
Oh, yet another edition I would love to have an English version of. The world seems to be full of those! 😋
For the Love of Comics yes but I think these may not be so politically correct in the eyes of a 21st century reader. The storyline is pretty good a shame they never translated this to English
Where can you get the tiny tintin box set?
I found this used on eBay but I also saw it is available on Amazon US. I’m sure it’s easier to find in Europe?
Thanks! 😀
Do these mini books have the full page colour plates? Like in L'ile Noire?
No, these ones don't include those plates, but the larger full-size facsimile editions (like the copy of Tintin in America I show here: ua-cam.com/video/pvHlRu4yI2Q/v-deo.html ) do!
@@ftloc Thanks a lot 🙂
If the newer version have many scene censored, I would prefer this version. I happened to learn french as my fourth language, I could read it 75 percent.
There are things changed - not necessarily censored, although one or two things may be adjusted. There are also many things added. If you haven't, check out my edition comparisons for _The Black Island_ , _Tintin in America_ , and _The Cigars of the Pharaoh_ , all in this mini playlist:
ua-cam.com/play/PLf2B7UoR9NKWyI-w-6f2ifLKMNsDbTGsx.html
Cheers!
Those mini-books are mad! I saw a British shrunk-down version yesterday (to approximately A5) and I could barely read them! Sweet as they are, they're pretty useless as books :)
They’re certainly lovely, now to test if my ‘readability’ assumptions were accurate or not! 😀
I absolutely LOVE your reviews!
Thank you so much! Long may that continue 😁!
Love the video, but just thought you should know that the "H" in Herge is silent
Ah yes, there was a very informative discussion on that in one of the other video’s comments, but I guess after a lifetime of mispronunciation, it’ll take me a while to get used to it! 😋
Glad you enjoyed the video!
7:31 it's not a colour difference! Notice the colour one has the first 20 pages from the original 1939 one but herge has added a few new backgrounds! And page 21-62 were all redrawn in 1947 or 1948 I believe!
Ah I meant the colour facsimile I have seems almost exactly like the most modern version other than a difference in colours. I need to do a closer comparison between all three editions (two colour editions and one black and white) now to understand fully what's up! Thanks for the notes! 😁
Okay
Thanks! 👍👍👍👍
@@ftloc One of the big changes there is the more accurate redesign of Balkan uniforms for the guards, in the modern editions.
@@abhishekjamalabad5950 oh yess I do remember that
Ah, the book of books (no, not refering to the Bible...). Actually this edition has been around for quite sometime. I’ve always seen these as quind of gimmicky but, nevertheless, a good introduction to the early versions of Hergé work. As far as i know these were never published in english (not in this format anyway..), so to find them in the US is kind of a suprise.
Yes, I have been surprised by the presence of foreign language prints in the US as well - all of Casterman Editions that weren’t found in India came from the US as well!
Is the tintin in congo fascimile version rare?
I don't think so, but I don't know a lot about rarity and collectability outside of anecdotal experience. It is available in both black and white and colour editions, and since there was no redrawing of the original pages like there was for many others, a facsimile would not really be that different from what we have, I would think?
@@ftloc thanks a lot for the reply and also for the clarification...I'm an admirer of your work and collection...kudos
Sir I watched your video today for the first time, and it's very good. So please if you have time ,can you make a video about "Attack on Titan" manga?
I definitely plan to, I was just waiting until I finished the whole series first! 🙂
@@ftloc Thank you sir for your reply ♥️
I’m reading blue lotus
First time? Or is it a reread?
First time
Let me know what you think! Is this also your first Tintin?
No I’ve read about nine
Sir, why was only Land of Soviets always printed in it's original form?
It's because there is no other form for it - I don't think Herge liked it very much (since he was more or less forced to do it by the magazine publisher) and he never redrew it the way he did his other books.
Oh! So that's why we can see a difference in the sketch of Soviets. Thank You Sir for the info!😄 Much Love❤️
Why is everything regarding Tintin so underrated?
Is it? I've always found it to be incredibly popular and beloved, and a global phenomenon. Even by my own tiny channel standards, no other videos of mine get the kind of attention that my Tintin videos do 😋
No I want it like Marvel. As I don't like Marvel. The only favourites are Tintin and Star Wars.
Possibly because Franco-Belgian comics, especially Tintin, never made it big in American comic circles, and the latter dominated the global comic scene in many ways?
too much talk.
Haha, indeed! First time here? This is a talk channel! 😁
