  • Destination Moon (1953) and Explorers on the Moon (1954) are two fan-favourite Tintin adventures (or one two-part adventure), and this new two-in-one hardcover edition from Egmont celebrates the 50th anniversary of the moon landing (the one by Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins). Here's a quick look at this new English language edition that contains no special features or extras, but may still be special for some.

    My favorite Tin Tin is “The Shooting Star.” While I haven’t read a lot of Tin Tin, only 2 stories, I fell in love with them instantly. They have a quality that makes me feel like a 12 year old when I read them and the great race aspect of shooting star further drove that feeling. I can’t wait to read the moon stories.

    • @ftloc

      The Shooting Star is another one of those that doesn't get enough love. I , too, love the race aspect of it, but also the really dark start of the story, which (as you will find out) is not really typical. I am sure you will enjoy all the other adventures as well and I wish you luck!

    I just purchased Tintin On The Moon. I started reading Tintin since I was 6. Destination Moon is the second book I read, and I absolutely loved it. I immediately bought Explorers On The Moon shortly after. These two books are why I decided to become an astronomer. 15 years later, I am one year away from graduating with degrees in physics and astrophysics.
    Herge had impeccable imagination to write a book like this before the first satellite was launched!

    My favourite Tintin book is Tintin in America. It was a gift from my mother. I didn't like it at first, because I was used to the more direct and slapstick comedy of Lucky Luke (and asterix), so I couldn't help but compare the two with a slight bias to the more familiar lonely cowboy. Luckily as I grew up it also grew on me along with the other tintin stories.
    Congratulations on your 2K subs. Excellent video as always.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you! And what a cool insight into coming into Tintin in America from the POV of Lucky Luke! I read America after many other Tintins, so I couldn't quite attach myself to the older, looser art style or the more rambling story at first. Although I ALWAYS loved the western stuff in it, and the machine that turned cows into sausages!

    • @dimitrisbakallis1508
      @dimitrisbakallis1508 4 роки тому +1

      @@ftloc I was in a sort of similar position. At times it got really boring for me and felt like it dragged on forever, especially compared to other comic books like lycky, asterix and disney's duck books, but there was always that endearing charm that had me coming back to it every so often. Though, I never really saw it as a western. It had clear depictions of modern cities/clothes/vehicles and the natives' lands transformed into buildings and banks within hours, so the cowboy dress up and the chase in the wild west felt more like an act. Not genuine like in Lycku Luke. That really put me off at first, but now that I now a bit more about history and have grown as a person it makes more sense and I can finally truly appreciate the story.

    The Tintin I'm most interested in is actually Explorers on the Moon! I'm a huge fan of space exploration and the Apollo moon missions in particular. First Man and the Apollo 11 documentary made 2019 a great space year in cinema! I've been meaning to read Tintin for a while - it's a revered classic. Oddly enough I never even read any as a kid, though I was a big fan of Asterix before I really knew what comics were. Great video as always!

      @ftloc  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you! And 'before I really knew what comics were' is such a great way to put it. I do believe that when I started reading Tintin, I didn't quite realise they were 'drawn' by someone. I don;t know what I thought, that they just spontaneously appeared or something?

    ‘Destination moon’ was the first comic I ever read, having had my dad read it to me at the age of 3 or 4 so as a result, it will always have a special place in my heart. I could never decide whether or not I enjoyed it more than the culturally rich and factually heavy ‘the Blue Lotus’ though 🤔

To be honest these are maybe my two least favourite Tintin adventures as I'm not interested in space and I also feel that Explorers on the Moon is a bit too dark as a result of Frank Wolff's fate. But it seems like a lovely edition and will fit nicely into my collection! 😊

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 роки тому +1

      I have to say that I felt the same way when I was younger - in particular Explorers didn't seem to have the charm of the other stories (although at the time I think I failed to see the darkness in Wolf's decision, even at that age I think the redemption sacrifice was a thing I had seen used in movies liberally.) But I have grown to really love the designs and artwork specifically, and Calculus' apoplectic fury is one of the memorable sequences of the series for me now 😁

    Ah, Tintin. My favorite has to be Prisoners of The Sun. Absolutely amazing stories. Memories of me reading this and loving them. I also urge you to also cover Jo, Zette and Jocko and the valley of cobras. very close to Tintin and perhaps for a more younger reader.

    • @ftloc

      I have a bunch of Tintin videos because that is such a formative and favourite series of comics for me too! I talk about my favourites in an older video, but honestly they're all such wonderful books.
      I've read the Valley of the Cobras when I was young, but that (or any other Jo, Zette and Jocko books) seem to be very hard to get one's hands on these days, for some reason. Very aggravating!

    The Tintin I am most interested is... The series of Tintin on the moon. Not because I want to win the giveaway. But after the recent expedition of Chandrayaan 2 of India, I am quite intrigued to read how Herge portrayed the journey to Moon, even before someone did it in reality.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 роки тому

      It''s a great ride, very cleverly alternating between high drama and small time domestic hi-jinks. It doesn't shortchange you on the length of the journey itself either. As i mentioned in the video, the fact that it still holds up is really something remarkable. Also, if you are interested in primitive space exploration stories and don;t mind having your heart broken into thousands of pieces, I highly recommend Laika, about the first dog in space.

    Coming to the topic, the moon adventures aren't my favorites although i enjoy them. My brother loves them though.
    I really love explorers on the moon. I love the art details in destination moon but there is a lot of text involved which can be boring if you are not in the mood to hear scientific lectures.

      It helps when Calculus flies off the handle, but even when there's a pageload of explanation going on, my wife recently pointed out how Haddock is always commenting away with things like 'Yes, yes I was very concerned about that too...', almost representing the everyday reader in his being lost. So comedy gold is mined from there too, which I think is a very imitated technique nowadays.

    I wonder what avid Tintin fans think of the 1950's movie DESTINATION MOON which fairly obviously was an inspiration for these 2 Herge books? (I book them myself way back in the early 60's as an addition to my film-related files and very much enjoyed them.They were my first exposure to Tintin in the US, though, even as a very young kid I had always been at least dimly aware of his existence. Our American equivalent to those books were the Carl Barks tales of Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck and his nephews going on outrageous adventures.)

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  3 роки тому +1

      Aha, I didn't know of that movie but will definitely look it up now! Herge drew inspiration from a lot of sources, but I wish this edition had some extras or historical information about these particular stories.
      And yes, the Barks Duck stories, with their globe-trotting adventures that sometimes incorporated the science fictional or the supernatural, definitely mirror the adventures of Tintin; they both have that vibe that the Indiana Jones movies also tapped into!

    • @RSEFX
      @RSEFX 3 роки тому

      @@ftloc The movie DESTINATION MOON is generally available on YT, if you care to check it out. It's not nearly as much fun as the Tintin books, but it was a very influential film at the time that (along with a smaller film called ROCKETSHIP X-M) really launched---kind of a pun there----the whole giant sci-fi movie craze of the 50's. It was considered very accurate for its time, and had major input from scientists and rocket engineers throughout its production. But, it is kinda "dry", and could've used some of the Herge charm!

    I'm a huge Tintin fan, but I don't see the point of this book. The only advantage is a tiny shelf space gain, but you loose the art of the two classic covers. The "new" cover isn't even new as it is just a blowup image fom the story. They should have added (at the very least) some background dossier with sketches, references photos and anectdotes that comes in many french language of classic reprints these days. This is just a cheap way to cash in on the many Tintin completists collectors.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 роки тому

      Yeah, losing the cover art is a real pity! Especially since those two are the only two in the entire series that create a sense of continuity with the rocket in both, which goes with 'Moon' to clearly convey it's a two-parter. Still, so many prose books get so many different editions for all kinds of nonsensical reasons, why begrudge a comic that's gotten popular enough to hang with the prose bestsellers a bit of excess, eh? 😁
