I’m not even going to lie. That intro actually brought a tear to my eye. BF3 and specifically that mission in the campaign was my childhood and was what really got me into aviation in the first place. Such an amazing intro cred to webe. My god.

Phly, with the Phoenix missiles you no longer need a radar lock, you can just activate the tracker in TWS mode without alerting the enemy.
So like when they have a solid green box around them?
the missiles would still alert the enemy since they have their own radar tracker

Hey phly, just letting you know you're using too many flares in your evasion technique, this is why the missiles continue to track your engine despite you throwing flares at it, the flares are used to confuse the IR systems, however if you use too many, you actually negate that confusion by giving it a cloud of signals to look through that lead directly to your flight path, you see, the IR systems inside the missiles are supposed to not detect the ground or background emissions of heat but instead are to lock on to higher powered heat emissions for lack of a better term. I'm sure you're aware of that fact so I wont babysplain it XD. but yes, too many flares is actually harmful, especially if you use them while changing your flight path simultaneously, its like a bread crumb trail, the less dense the trail, the harder its gonna be to find the next crumb you get what I mean? I hope this helps out a bit with survivability in the F-14 because its systems are complex and are practically unseen ever in war thunder or really any simulator that isn't DCS. Enjoyed the video just wanted to give you some tips.✌

In dcs it usually dump a load of flares while completely backing off the after burner and pulling hard, purely because i don't know what else too do 😂😂😂 what's your thoughts on this and how could i improve my evasion?
@@KjllShot dive and fly to the side while dropping flares and chaff at regular intervals so you can escape radar lock. Getting lower and flying sideways relative to the enemy makes it so you're approaching the enemy radar at the same speed as the ground, so it can easily lose lock

I am just flabbergasted by people like him. The fuck is the appeal in sitting there doing that when every player is obviously testing out the F-14. Nobody on the other team is in AAA and nobody wants to engage with your stupid SAM missiles they want to fight the other Tomcats. Like honestly, do you think he was just a total moron or trying to ruin their enjoyment? Because those are the two scenarios I can see as to why you wouldn't switch to a plane or leave the game.

Thats cause it has custom loadouts. The default ones are barebones as hell. Saw on another stream that you can do the 6x 7F and 2x 9H together.

When you said your radar was broken (around 12:40) i think you accidentally laser designated and the missile was trying to lock to the designation target. right before you go in for guns you can see the missile tracking indicator on a red box in the distance by the coastline

@@MarshalBeard he’s taught me quite a bit about the game when it comes to air. Tanks I was pretty settled in but he has provided a few pointers. In my opinion and experience he’s quite capable when it comes to controls and understanding them.
@@RedbashoGAMING well sure, if you don't know a single thing about the game you can learn a lot about basic strategy. However, tanks have been out for how many years now? 6? And he still doesn't understand how spawn radar works. The enemy spawn gets a red bubble around it when you're too close, indicating you are detected by the enemy teams spawn radar. To this day, despite literally hundreds of thousands of people screaming at him in the comments section about for FOR YEARS, he still doesn't know how it works, and just recently even posted a video where he says "man I wish there was a way to tell if I was on spawn radar". I can bring up 1000 other basic things phly doesn't understand but I'm already writing an essay on just one. I've complained about phlys lack of knowledge on many things in many videos. I'd expect more from someone who's literal JOB is making war Thunder content. I'll give Steve one thing, he's got the entertainment part down. He just needs to put a little more effort into understanding how the game works and not get frustrated at the game when HE makes a mistake because he doesn't know what he's doing.

With 469 comments I'm sure mine will be lost out there but I think War Thunder should allow cold firing Air-to-Air (AA) missiles (no lock of any kind). To my knowledge that is currently not allowed in the game. The reason for this is related to what we observed early on in the video. You were capable of tracking missiles that still had their engines burning and as you witnessed this can confuse the radar and make locking on difficult (it didn't help either that there was a mix of enemy and friendly air planes).
Essentially the idea behind this is two fold.
First, in more advanced weapons such as the AIM-9X and AIM-120C they are capable of firing and going Pitbull on a target should one appear in front of the missile's flight path. This is usually either a last ditch effort by the pilot to get a missile out and shoot down a target or a more complicated way of indirect firing a missile that is guided by other means (usually a friendly AWACS). However, the lack of a proper lock, it can just be a waste and fly out to the middle of nowhere or worse accidentally lock onto friendlies. For now, War Thunder doesn't have such advanced missile systems that have that ability until now. The AIM-54 Phoenix in the game can't do what I just described in the game but maybe eventually one day we will get more advanced weapon systems that can and I argue we will need a feature to cold fire (no lock) a missile for this reason and the next one.
Reason two is more of a defensive strategy. As I previously mentioned, the radar system had a hard time locking onto the intended target but this is more of a game mechanic than the radar's fault. In a scenario, where a F-14 player comes against a weaker player in a one to one situation, the F-14 will have the long range advantage and put the other player in the defensive early on and if the F-14 doesn't get a long range kill, it will force the enemy player into an energy disadvantage by the time the two planes close in on each other. Therefore, one way to counter long range locks from the F-14 is for the enemy player to cold launch a few Air-to-Air missiles in its flight path. The F-14 will observe multiple targets and will require the F-14 pilot to filter out the clutter and make the proper lock onto the enemy plane. This would allow the enemy plane to close in on the F-14 but does not guarantee it is safe from long range lock. I mention the use of Air-to-Air missiles because they burn longer than Air-to-Ground (AG) missiles and will not confuse the F-14 radar for as long compared to the AA.
At 12:57 when you sent 2 missiles at once, fair play BUT, next time a similar opportunity comes, send 2 again only at different launch angle's. one high, one low relative to the target, see what happens then. That way the target has to avoid 2 missiles from 2 angles rather than 2 from 1. might work, idk, im just throwing it out there. I haven't been able to play this game for a very long time lol.

Don’t get me wrong, I am interested in the F14 and the trailer and weapons systems are all fantastic. However, the idea of grinding for two years to actually get it (highest US naval aircraft is F6F and highest overall is F104 A) or paying £50-60 for it is repugnant. I know that a decent flight sim game and a dlc with the tomcat would set me back far more,
To any who bothered to read, Is it better to go premium and grind, or wait for the jet to drop and buy the (almost inevitable) premium version?
i dont think theyre going to make a premium version so grinding is prob your best bet, as someone who has done the grind to mig21s and f4e it is a really long way so just keep that in mind
If you already have a flight stick and throttle for whatever reason the DCS tomcat is just a bit more money for the module. Not the same kind of experience but then you'd get to fly a far more realistic representation of the aircraft.
Take from someone who's playing since 2012, if you don't have any top rank vehicles yet don't even bother grinding. There's no indication they're making a premium version and Gaijin is honestly a disgusting anti consumer company, I'd list all the garbage things they did like introducing the Strv 103 on a broken br to farm money and nerf 1 month later, puting heatfs as stock shell for high br tanks, putting the black prince on sale to nerf the br one month later, ignoring the balance of maps and shoot from spawn for high br matches, etc etc but it's all too tiresome.
If you really want it you can realistically grind to it in a couple weeks if you’re willing to buy a premium pack. I made 350k RP yesterday in 5~ hours using the F-5C and premium account. Do that for a week or two and you’ll have it

Okay, a quick breakdown... TWS is used if you want to fire the missile and focus on another target. The track is all you have to maintain for the Phoenix to get to Pitbull range. You can still hard lock a target and shoot, but you must maintain that lock similar to the Sparrow. If you change target in anything other than TWS, the missile goes stupid.
OK, advice, you should fly with a 4 2 2 load out. 4 aim 54, 2 aim 7 sparrow and 2 sidewinder. It is in my opinion the best loadout for the tomcat.
2 4 2 imo. Push two Phoenix early then rely on the more mobile sparrows for the head on engage

After some use of the missiles on the dev server I think that the Phoenix is definitely worth a spot on the load out but the sparrow is more effective. I feel Phoenix was pulling a 25-40% kill rate while sparrows are upwards of 80%
For a 14A I agree. Fir the N i would Take 6 Phoenix dur to it flying high and fast. (14B thrust is wayy more and exceeds mach 2.5.
Even just doing 6 sparrows is really good. I wish the f4j could do custom loadouts. With pulse doppler the aim7 are pretty much free kills
Best intro I have ever seen. My dad and I religiously played battlefield 3 and that will always and forever give me goosebumps.
Going Hunting is still a top tier level in battlefield history; would have been 10x better if you could have piloted the super hornet.

Phly, have you ever considered trying DCS World? I feel like you'd have a much better grip over how this beast works if you did. A QRD on the Phoenix though, it's a tricky fella of a missile and has a couple different modes of firing: Option 1, firing without a lock will fire the missile "maddog" meaning it will lock onto the first target it sees. For the next two options, it is essential you understand what TWS is. Traditionally, radars locked targets and guided in semi-active missiles by essentially continously lighting them up and "painting" them. The phoenix can be used at its longest ranges in this manner, and as far as I know, stays semi-active the entire time it's launched, and this is what we'd call PD mode or "Pulse Doppler" mode. However, to use the phoenix most effectively, it is used in TWS. In TWS, a radar will continously scan a set of targets, making computerized predictions on where these targets will be on the next scan. The F-14 has TWS auto and TWS manual, in TWS auto, the priority target, or the target that is currently "locked" and primed for your phoenix, will generally be the target closest to you. When you launch on a target in this manner, the launching aircraft (see also: you), will guide the missile into its terminal phase where it will turn on its active radar at the last second before killing the enemy. The advantage to this technique is that your enemy will never know you've launched a missile at him until it's too late.

I wonder if Gaijin will program the missiles to give themselves extra range by going higher into the atmosphere like they would IRL. The Phoenix's would go ridiculously high and could cruise for a long way and glide to the target.
They also go a lot faster up there.

Ever since I started playing war thunder I have watched your channel, and even when I quit playing the game your content was too good to stop watching. The gameplay is just so good, and I love how you explain the weapon systems and jets/planes. I am very interested in such technology and warfare ever since I saw a group of jets fly over my house. I really want to play like you, but I am stuck in 4.7 in aviation and I just can’t seem to get a hold of the army/tanks. Do you have any tips/tricks that helped you get so good?
time bro, it just takes time. If you have the money, pick up some premium time. Having premium lets you focus more on the gameplay aspect rather than trying to break even every match.
Aside from that, try to watch people on youtube like Spitflyer, Defyn, and Hunter, because they all upload gameplay videos and you can really learn from them.
I've made it to top tier in multiple nations, and trust me, i was once in your position. Just give it some time, and you'll get there eventually.
@@2milk867 thanks for the help man! I have been playing for about 1.5 years now, but I took a 3 month break in between. I have thought about spending money, since honestly a couple bucks doesn’t break the bank, but I am very much against spending money in games. I haven’t really watched any other gameplay, so I guess that will help, but sadly I do need time for other things like school, work and family so I can’t just watch 40 hours of war thunder a week.

Phly I’m late but there is an option in settings to turn the radar into the rectangle. Then after that there is a horizontal and vertical manual targeting for radar you can use while in the rectangle mode for TWS. That way you can pick your target while tracking all of them.
I don’t know if you know this but you can set the radar up in settings to allow you to control which target you lock onto. You have to disable the cyclic target select in general settings first. It’s too confusing for me to explain but I suggest watching a radar tutorial

The Battlefield 3 campaign sound effects in the intro, amazing.
To get true lock with tws you need to select target inside your radar with your horizontal and vertical cue axis, if you set your little dot on your target them lock you will get a much better lock in tws
From what little i know, the Phoenix should be able to guide in on your radar signal until it gets close enough to go pitbull. Maybe if your missile lock indicator isnt red, try to maintain the lock until the missile gets close?

The missile lock system looks a little painful at the moment but I'm sure that will improve over time. F-14 afterburner seems like it's weak too. I thought these F-14 could reach well into Mach 2
I think the one in doesn't have the beefy engines and is a really early F14
The F14A had infamously underpowered engines for its weight, apparently it was common practice to just leave it in afterburner at all times in what would be a dogfight and then at or close to full throttle when cruising. Just what I gathered from watching Growling Sidewinder DCS videos where he got in contact with a real F14 pilot at one point.

F 14A and f 14B are pretty much differnt plane fir this reason. Expecting the 14B to be cruising at 10k meters or more at mach 2.5 hurling phoenixes into the strotosphere
F-14 has worse t/w than Phantom... MiG23M should outaccelerate it. ...blet alone the MLD...

the other thing with TWS is in real life applications circa 1980's , friendlies (usually) and missiles are not going to be in the enemies formation clouding up the selection process like you'll see in game here. in the start of Air RB 11.3 pray you have USA on your side because 16x6 of these the probability of a large amount of them hitting... games are going to end quick(er)
i can tell its the BF3 F/A-18 intro just from how they mount on when it's already on the Catapult (which they don't do irl)

From what I can recall the AIM54 could also potentially be used against ground targets, but only under the rarest of circumstances.

Day 3: Phly you should try naval EC. It’s available every weekend now. The huge maps and long battle time make it much more fun than normal naval battles, especially with battleships and battlecruisers.

Hint: to effectivelly avoid IR missiles, cut your afterburner first, then flare and notch
fun fact: you can fire a fox3 missile without gaining any sort of lock on a target and the missile locks on to anything it sees first on its radar. So if there's a cluster of target, you can let it rip.

phly. the aim 54 just needs a radar lock and has to be red. after that it is independent after launch and you dont need to radar the target ( if the target is around 25kms or more you have to have radar on the target after launch).
Funny thing, you can launch it at any distance since they have programmed it to have arh with any launch parameters. This is only for dev sever tho
