Thanks for the overwhelming response to this video, as well as our other videos on The Real Gunsmith Channel! We appreciate your comments and questions. Due to the volume of the comments and questions, some which would take some time to answer, we just don’t have the time to respond to them all. However many of the questions will be answered in future videos.
Our first priority is to our paying clients. Writing out long answers would take time away from that, and I won’t put them “on hold” to post long answers here.
If you have questions about getting gun work done or a custom rifle built, contact us at randyselby@randyscustomrifles.com. I have a wide range of prices for custom rifles so even the “average Joe or Josephine” can get into a custom package, just as accurate as the higher end rifles.
For our detractors, we appreciate your difference of opinion, too, but I stand by my decades of experience.
To all of you, thanks again for your overwhelming support. Stay tuned! God bless you all. Randy and Cathy

Any time I have run into a reloading problem I searched out an old timer and they helped me solve the problem every time. I now have 30 years of reloading experience. But I still learn something new each time I watch one of Randy’s videos.

This is awesome. Growing up in Wyoming must have been a lot of fun. I’m from Texas so I envy the mountains and terrain there. Its all about making the most of the opportunities you have and not dreaming about the ones you don’t. And that’s what you have done and what we should all do. None of my family is into guns beyond the annual whitetail season. For some reason my brother and I started collecting guns around 12 years old which was unheard of even for central Texas. We started with all the major rifles of WW2. Garands, Enfields, Mausers, Nagant Variants. I saved up one summer with my sights set on a AR15. Even sold my No.4 Mk 1to my brother to get it. Fortunate to have access to a piece of farm land not to far away I looked into reloading. Lucky for me I had parents that didn’t mind buying components for me, with my money of course. Long story short after self teaching myself I developed a load around 1 moa. I was lucky to get a first round hit on a 10” plate @400 yards. That was enough to get me hooked. After high school. I didn’t need my parents to go shooting so I picked up a 243 and became proficient at 400-650 yards and learned about external ballistics and wind calling. Again I was lucky enough to have a place to experiment so I made the most of it and a lot of memories. I admire the skills you have with machining and stock building. Thanks for the videos.

Randy, Your last words exemplify what few folks can expound as their legacy for the many aspects of firearms build and design, as well as projectile, guided intended impact with superior optics EXCEL’LANCE through design execution. So much of your story resonates. Humbly appreciate your sharing the intimacy, passion, and dedication to importance of family cohesion. Emphasizing the back to roots, should give pause to all who may hear or read your story. We camped on the Shoshone River in 2016 attending a shoot with John Linebaugh. Hope to return to meet you someday. Could we have passed a sign on the way to Yellowstone? Jerry Moran.

Great country. Did you know John passed away recently. Go to Cody Enterprise for a good article on his life. The reporter didn't know the difference between bullets and cartridges, but otherwise well written.
No signage on the road, as we are "by appointment only" and we are on a private, not public road.
Take care. Thanks for watching and for your kind words.

@@TheRealGunsmith Randy, Lee Jurras, and several other old notables adopted me in the early seventies. I met John Linebaugh years ago and had not seen him for decades. In June of 2015, we were invited to his shoot in POWELL the usual suspects were there. We returned in 2016 and stayed in touch over the past 7 years. I got the call on March 19th the day he left this life. Him and our son bonded when they met. Hope to share some time with you and your wife sometime. Appreciate the info on the article. We will research. Stay in the Faith and active in the wild. Jerry

I spoke to a gunsmith local here in Tampa to get a canted sight block fixed on my AK. I don’t have the tools to do it properly so there I was . The guy took the rifle for 3 weeks adjusted the sight drum all the way left and tried to charge me 80$ . That is my typical experience with trying to find skilled people to help me out when I don’t have the equipment.

Wanted to say hello, and let you know how much I enjoy your videos. Your ability to be authentic and direct are perfect for what we (those who hunt, gunsmith ect...) need as we move forward, yesterday shouldn't be lost in the muck that seemly leaking into our world. Your video on Ethics was absolutely SPOT ON! The people who watch you videos need to put actions to their lives wherever they live and provide the passion, truth and ethical evidence in their lives...then I think we would get an upper-hand with young lives changed and we would deal a strong blow to those who what to take our firearms away.
I'm currently a student at Sonoran Desert Institute and have used some of your videos for references for my studies. I hope to be able to pass your work on to others for the good of all!
Keep up the good work Randy!

Wow - what an interesting story! Thanks for sharing this. Did you by any chance meet Elmer Keith and/or "270 Jack" back in the day? I´m guessing you might have since you worked for Speer and also lived in Idaho. Is there any piece about Elmer in any of your clips? If not - would you consider making one? I´m new to this channel so I haven´t had time to plow through all the clips just yet - but I will for sure. I´ve been trying to find videos of Elmer but haven´t succeeded - would like to hear his voice and what he sounded like. I´m a 41 year old Swede who got into light gunsmithing about a year ago shortening, crowning and threading barrels for mounting suppressors. Worked on 14 barrels so far so not really up to your speed ;-) but it is only a side business to my boring ;-) engineering job. Thanks again for a great clip and a great channel! I really enjoy listening to your calm voice and learning a lot a the same time.

This was an awesome video randy. Supposing someone is already a bsba but is interested in adding gunsmithing as a knowledge base, where would you suggest they go to school these days?

      Thanks!
My only experience, of course, is with Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado. It still has a great gunsmithing program. One of our clients attended there a few years ago, did the full two years. If the one rifle I saw that he built is any indication, I'd say they are still doing a great job.
I hear of many people that want to apprentice, or to "learn gunsmithing just by books and videos", but a person who will just be learning from one other person, may be learning bad habits or practices. And hands on experience with the proper equipment, such as a certified gunsmithing school has, is paramount, in my opinion.
Eastern Wyoming College in Gillette WY is relatively new, but I've heard good things about it. The person heading the program is a Trinidad State Junior College Gunsmithing graduate.
When I was in college for gunsmithing, business courses weren't a matter of course. I think it is very, very needed, so take that in conjunction.
Thanks for watching and good luck!

I always liked Speer bullets, wished they still made the Speer Mag Tip bullet. Being in SW Montana Speer bullets are hard to find and heard Speer came out with the Deep Curl and I have yet to see any on the shelf at any of the gun stores here. Hornady, Nosler and Barnes are abundant but hardly any Speer.

You remind me of me. I was already drafting architectural and mechanical drawings when I was just 10 years old. I was a licensed General Building Contractor by the age of 25. I've been building shit for nearly five decades. I can relate.

Not hard to get a contractors license. Plenty of women have one and never have built anything.

    • @Oldhogleg
      @Oldhogleg 3 роки тому

@@Dougarrowhead I don't know what state you're talking about, but here in California when I got my license back in 1985 you had to have documented and verifiable four years of experience in the trade you're applying a license for along with an affidavit from a licensed contractor. Then they'll let you take the state trade and law test for the license.

Machine shops in school aren't what they used to be. Even by the mid 1980s lathes were off limits in my junior high. They were in the shop but hadn't been used in years.

I talked with Randy about doing some custom work on an old Remington 721 I had and his prices were a lot cheaper than I thought they would be given his reputation for quality workmanship. I recommend everybody reach out to him with project ideas you won’t regret it.
Randy I’m gonna not do the 721 but I’m saving for a safari rifle and I’d like to have you make me a 416 Rigby so I will reach out to you via email

We try to keep our prices in a range so, with budgeting, most people can afford the work. I am not out there to make my work only available to deep pockets.

I count you with GunBlue490 and Paul Harrell as simply the unquestionable best firearms content on the Internet. Gun Jesus (Ian McCollum) of Forgotten Weapons and John Correa of Active Self Protection top off the list. If you can't learn it from these five, you didn't need to know it anyway.
