Old Timer: Ted Ogston

  • For our last video of 2023: Randy reminisces about a neighbor of theirs from when he was growing up, Ted Ogston, who at one time was predator control for Yellowstone National Park, McKinley National Park and later Death Valley.
    Also, in the video, we show the cover pages of 3 booklets, two by Ted, one by his wife, Helen, that they wrote and had published by the Cody Enterprise in 1970 and 1971. We are not aware of any outlet for the copies. The Cody Enterprise, when contacted, did not know anything about them. If I hear anything back from them, I will add the information here.

    Thank you for sharing! The Savage model 1920 was a mini Springfield action. It was made from 1920-1929 and only offered in two calibers, the 250 and 300 Savage. My grandmother worked for Savage Arms in Utica, NY from 1927-1946. Her deer rifle was a 1928 model 1920 carbine in 250-3000. I have that rifle now and it’s a handy deer rifle. I will give it to my nephew when he gets older. 👍

    You can read a book but listening to a man with first hand knowledge of some of these strong determined men (sort of like yourself) are fascinating. For someone who has only dreamed of those adventures, I could listen to you all day long, Randy! (National treasure!)

    Wiley Post and Will Rogers were killed on 15 Aug 1935 at Point Barrow, AK. That's about as far north as you can get without going to the North Pole. Ted must have been an extraordinary man to thrive in that harsh environment, then survive the heat of Death Valley. By comparison my Dad was a Florida boy who was sent to Fairbanks, Alaska by the Air Force just prior to the start of the Korean War to maintain B-29 engines. He spent two years there, always thankful he didn't wind up in Korea with some of his classmates who were servicing A-26 Invaders.

    I have a late friend that was a crack shot trained by the Army.
    After he got out of the Army,
    2 other people who went hunting with Mr. Gary small game. After Mr. Gary bagged a big cottontail, after grabbing the rabbit by the hindlegs with his 12 Guage pump, he shot at a covey of quail on the rise, and his shotgun exploded in his face, because that dadgum rabbits hade hit the muzzle and split the barrel to the ring around the midpoint of the barrel, and Mr. Gary got 3 pellets in his forearm that I dug out with a needle. That rabbit was laying on the ground with his hade blowed off!
    This was in 1979 in Irion County around Mertzon Texas.
    MR. Gary's buried In San Angelo, and I Still stop by to thank him for his service, and thank him for all them hunting memories. Semper Fi.

    What would the closest equivalent of the 250-3000 be today? 25-06? 257 Weatherby Mag?

    • @willong1000
      @willong1000 9 місяців тому +1

      In original factory loading with the 87 gr bullet, 257 Roberts would be a bit slower and .25-06 somewhat faster. The Weatherby cartridge was significantly faster -- high velocity was the basis of Roy Weatherby's notoriety.

    Randy quick question I have found several Peters 7mm rifle cartridges. Peter’s was purchased by Remington in 1934 and the facility closed in 44 . If the Remington 700 didn’t come out till 62 , what other rifles were using it ? I’m trying to pin a date on the cartridges?

    • @TheRealGunsmith
      @TheRealGunsmith  8 місяців тому

      It came out in 1962. 7mm Rem Mag.
      Go to your library and check out Cartridges of the World. A good resource.

    I wonder if his parka hood was trimmed out in wolverine instead of wolf? I think wolverine was the desired fur.

    • @TheRealGunsmith

      Yes, that was desired fur, but his WAS wolf, for whatever reason.

    .....crazy that they heard that plane Will Rogers & Wiley Post crashed & died in, on a day when it was 72 degrees below zero, because records tell that it was August 15,1935,.....that sounds like hell froze over in August.....lol

    • @rpmorrisjr
      @rpmorrisjr 8 місяців тому

      I don’t believe he was saying it was 72 below on the day he heard the plane. I believe that was just a general reference to the temperature disparity between Arctic and Death Valley.

    Randy, I am quit convinced you are a master gunsmith, and I would love to have the opportunity to work with you and learn from you. What I am questioning is, why do you hate predators so much, like bears, wolfs etc. I grew up in the very fare north and I really enjoy these animals in the environment. I have no problem hunting these if they have a sustainable level. Only if we understand, for nature to be at its fullest we must allow those we fear to be included. The wild is only 100% wild if we allow including these animals. I would love to see some of your work posted, I am sure they are treasures to be had.

      Randy has made several videos on how leftists have ruined our wildlife via an unhealthy increase of predators. Not hard to find if you search his channel.

      Because where WE live we have a big over abundance of wolves and grizzlies, thanks to gov't incompetence.

    • @TheRealGunsmith
      @TheRealGunsmith  8 місяців тому

      I hate the mismanagement of them and with their overpopulation, the destruction of the ungulate herds in our area, which at one time were the premier herds in north America, and now we are reduced to a near wildlife desert. I don't fear them, I have a health respect for them
      There are videos with my work posted.
      Thanks for watching.
