    Introducing the NEW Perception Pescador Pilot Pedal Drive Kayak!
    This may be the most affordable pedal drive kayak to hit the market so far. KayakDIY interviews Jake, Perception Rep, at ICAST 2016 and together they discuss what the kayak has to offer. Can't wait to get one on the water for testing! I have loved my Perception kayaks.

    I bought one and love it! Very solid, fast, has great weight capacity, tracks well and is stable. I can throw a cast net out of it. The down sides are the factory rod holders (they're horrible) and the lack of internal storage. I really like the pedal drive. Easy to pedal and lifts up out of the way with no prop exposed when in shallow water. Best part is this kayak is now $1499 on Amazon (freight included).

    Thank you for bringing this hidden gem to us! This looks like a great alternative to those rich man's petal kayaks! (I won't mention any names, but everyone knows what brand I'm talking about!)
    The only thing that really concerns me is there is no in-hull storage. Where do you put your rods when travelling, or going through mangroves, for instance? You can't have all of them out, unless you want to lose a couple! I also wouldn't leave home without a paddle, because we all know stuff happens. Where would I put it? Its interesting that they put reflectors in the peddles, is that just in case you run a ground?! To me it looks like they covered everything "design" wise, but didn't think about actual, everyday use. They should have an actual fisherman consult with them.
    Another thing is I've heard the gear ratio is 6-to-1, I wonder how that's going to effect peddling? I know that guy said "easy cruising on the water," but saying it and doing it are two different things.
    I think for the price, it will open up a whole new world to us poor people! Even with obvious things they didn't consider.
    Without knowing much, I'd have to say the zero draft feature is nice, and I like the fact that its still attached to the boat. If you flip over, it ain't going any where. That's always a plus!!! I also like the storage pods in the front. I can see one filled with ice and becoming a cooler already!
    I might have to do some serious saving and skip a few meals for this, but I think it will totally be worth it.
    Dying for some hands on reviews!

      +Larry Talbot if Perception can get us one we would love to review it on the water. We have some companies that have committed to sending us kayaks but waiting on Perception. We have invested a lot of money into camera gear specifically to enhance on the water tests footage. For example we bought a drone for aerial views and have a virtual reality 360 camera on pre-order. The commercial drone license required pricey drone registration, TSA background check, and aeronautical exam. We are committed to getting you the most information and engaging content.
      My family owns 3 Perception kayaks and they are top quality. I was personally impressed by the Pilot, but do agree some tweaks could be made. The price is well worth it for what I saw.

    • @LarryTalbot_1313
      @LarryTalbot_1313 8 років тому +1

      I hope they send you one! Not only would it be good for your subscribers, but it would also be good publicity for them. I hope they understand that.
      I'm glad you are about your viewers/subscribers. I've noticed a lot of channels just want viewers or subscribers. I look for content first. No one wants to sit through 30mn of a guy bragging about the 3k kayak he just bought, when the rest of us can barely afford a new paddle!
      Than you for caring!!!

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  8 років тому +1

      Larry Talbot Thank you very much Larry. That may have been the nicest posted comment I have received. Appreciate it. I definitely strive to give my subscribers/viewers the best content. I never want to appear to be bragging. I did just buy a $6k kayak only because it is a sailing kayak and could be useful in my area. I had to save up a lot and sell my PA14 that has been seen a lot on the channel. I also still own a Perception Rambler 135 tandem and hope to get the Pilot. Only kayaks from ICAST that I am currently receiving are the Uncharted Watercraft portable kayaks. Just awaiting correspondence from manufacturer. I strive to remain non-bias and simply give folks the information they need to make their own decision. Almost every brand has something unique to offer. I try to highlight that.

    Looks terrific. I may be sold if they can offer a switch out kit for the long blade propeller since I am interested in shallow estuaries for this sort of boat. My other concern is the lack of area for standing with this model. Otherwise it looks great!

    seems like a nice cheaper option but I think you just cant beat the native...very stable, you can stand up easily, built nicely, and the drive is nice to look at in my opinion...I also see getting anything dropped caught into those chair rails. the rudder that both the predator and this one look like they were thrown on...I will say I like the storage pod idea though..and the quick prop up..

      +angler152 Native Slayer is a great kayak, but check out our other ICAST videos. There are lots of pedal kayaks new this year. The Pescador pilot is the lowest priced one we have seen. Perception puts out great quality products. I own a Perception Rambler 13.5 tandem paddle kayak and it has been very reliable. So much so that 3 of my family members bought their own!

    • @angler152

      most of the other pedal kayaks pedal system seems to be big and bulky. I like the idea of being able to go to 0 draft and propulsion unit is in the water still and on the top side moves towards the bow and kind of out of the way and having a bigger deck space. Not to mention the price tag, which means extra money for accessories

  • @keepitreel3946

    I just bought one today and returned it in a span of about 30 mins. I'm glad the guys at Academy asked if I wanted them to assemble everything. Everything was fine until assembly. Parts were missing and parts from the store display had to be cannibalized to complete mine. Parts and assemblies on mine differed from the floor model as well. The metal rod used to keep the drive in place could not be secured. The holes were not lined up. The holes for the bracket around the drive system weren't drilled in the correct place and were misaligned. I was very disappointed. The guys at Academy did their very best to try and help me but I decided to listen to my gut that this was a significant flaw. That and the shallow rod holders. I got a refund. The original thing that sold me was that it was a less expensive version of a Native Kayak and a video of a guy standing in it and not being able to capsize it. I am going to wait for a Native Kayak.

    thanks for checking out the Perception! I like that boat. I was curious on one thing, can the pedal drive be removed? Just in case your going somewhere you know you won't use it (shallow rivers, marshes).

    • @KayakDIY
      @KayakDIY  8 років тому

      +HyJinX I believe it can. I think I recall pins that if removed allow it to be removed from the kayak. It looks to be one of the lightest pedal drives (visually not confirmed).

      +KayakDIY thanks, i hope so. i have the old psecador 12(the one with the wet butt) and i think this will be my upgrade. Plenty of time between now and early 2017 to learn more and get the funds to get this nice looking boat.

      I have a Pescador (Angler) 12 too, and use a lot of (lost) practice golf balls every summer! They just don't seem to make it to the next trip! I think this would be an awesome upgrade. I love the idea of not sitting in water all day! I had to resort to buying a throwable, just to keep out of the water.
      The only difference is I stuff my paddle and rods in the hull during transport. I don't know how I'm supposed to transport them with the Pilot. 4 rod holders would be great for trolling, but how to get the rods there without getting them broken? I lug mine of the back of my pick-up, so there not a spare inch for anything else, once my PFD, and gear is loaded.

      +Isaac Bos likely quite well in a mix of water types. The tri-hull design is very similar to one of my other Perception kayaks which does quite well. If Perception sends me one I would gladly put it through its paces in a wide array of water conditions.

      They didn't specifically note that but the pedal drive seems lighter weight than the other pedal drives of different brands. They list total weight in the video. I would guess the drive weighs for sure less than 12lbs but I could be wrong. Totally a guess. If I find out I will give more specifics.

      +Nash Guy they have two smaller lid covered hatches at bow. I would definitely get a waterproof bag. I actually prefer the netting tray they have. Kayaks with hatches are nice but I often have contents slide out of reach within the hall and that can become annoying.

    • @nashguy2814
      @nashguy2814 8 років тому

      I was referring to the front bow hatch itself not the inside of hull. Most kayaks usually have a hard shell insert or bag to keep your contents from going anywhere. But thanks I was not aware of the 2 smaller hatches at the front. Possibly interested in this pedal yak , problem is where am I going to be able to get it, being that I live in London Ontario Canada, it will prob cost me more which i'll prob pass on it if that's the case.

      +Leo Renner I haven't heard that yet. Will look into that. Send link to info if you have it. I have honestly been quite happy with my Perception kayaks.

      Leo Renner thanks for the info! I will continue to follow this as well. I really liked the Pilot for the money. Hope they resolve it and stand behind their product.

      I heard the nuts on the prop would come loose but the problem was fixed by a washer on each side and now they are shipping them with these washers .. just what I've heard .. will be ordering mine very soon

      Appreciate your feedback and feelings on the Perception Pescador Pilot. What areas concern you regarding the Pilot? What have you heard?
      Just curious.

    well if somebody happens to get this b4 me ,give me your honest opinion b4 I drop $1800, instead of $3500 on hobie ,tax season can't come early enough !

      +blue grass Bassin Personally I don't think you can go wrong with either one. However, you must be referring to Hobie PA14 at that price. Hobie Outback for mid range price definitely doesn't leave one with buyer's remorse. It does great in a wide range of waters. I can't speak about Pilot because I haven't had it on the water. The Perception Pescador Pilot is a steal from what I saw at ICAST. Nothing else compares for the price. Pedal drives are ideal for kayak fishing. I own Perceptions and will say they build fine products at great prices.

      KayakDIY yea a pa14 what I was thinking ! I've been watching videos over and over trying to talk my self in the pa14 lol but this price has me , but from videos it's hard to believe this has a 525lbs weight cap ,looks like not too much sticks out of the water to begin with ,and also diy what do you think on a person fishing with this in water that has a lot of stand up timber and also your thoughts on it being new too them (the peddle drive ) think it will hold

      The Perception kayak has a great tri-hull type design that provides a lot of displacement for its appearance. This leads to great weight capacity. They have a lot of kayaks with really great weight capacity and i own/owned a few. The pedal/prop drive of the Pilot will likely do equally fine in timber. It might suffer in stringy weeds unlike the Mirage Drive which seems to do fine. Prop drives occasionally can bind some from weeds wrapping around prop. Mirage drive will do better in shallow waters. The pedal/prop drives can't really adjust trim (depth). It is an all or none depth setting. Mirage drives can have flippers up against the bottom of hull to nearly a zero draft and still propel the kayak fwd/rev with fine pedal movements. I may be slightly biased having had several Hobies. I however, think the Pilot for the price is a great buy and is a major competitor with other pedal/prop drives but not with the mirage drive. The mirage drive only downside is you still must pull a cord to switch fwd/rev...whereas the prop drives you just pedal backward. So not "truly" 100% handsfree for the mirage drive.

      KayakDIY yeah I understand both ,I've looked at getting a pa for 2 years now ,it not the price that stops me as much as it is transportation, the perception is more the size of my ascend fs12t and I all ready Know it a pain transporting sometimes, same weight as well as the perception, and yeah there no weeds where I fish so that wouldn't be a problem

      We have a transportation video playlist. Not sure if any of the solutions help. We are working to get more options/videos for viewers. I used the hitch hauler bed extender with my Honda Ridgeline for the PA14.
