Hey how are you doing I'm James I'm a C7 T1 incomplete as of November 21 2021 it's been a very long journey I woke up from a coma not knowing I was in the hospital I just saw a bunch of tubes in me I try to move my legs and I couldn't I try to rip out my gtube and the tube in my throat I'm still learning my body
I have no core control or feeling it's hard for me to be in a chair for long periods of time most of my days are spent in my hospital bed which I have in my apartment My bed is in my living room because it can't go upstairs. Long story with my I would like to share with you. And honestly maybe you can help me understand myself a bit better. It's hard for me to talk to my family about it because nobody knows exactly what I go through mentally and emotionally physically they see but they can't understand it please help me
Thank you for sharing! I am a C6 incomplete since July 31,2024 and I have had body temp issues from day one. I am freezing cold and sweating at the same time. I also start sweating profusely anytime a plate of food is set in front of me. I also wear long sleeves pretty much all the time.
You're welcome! I have experience with being freezing cold and sweating at the same time as well. It's no fun and uncomfortable. However, I'm thankful it doesn't involve pain. Wow, that plate comment is interesting. I have noticed for several years (which I forgot about until reading your comment) that my left cheek gets cold and damp when I eat lunch. I've mentioned it in one of my videos before. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Bali sounds perfect! Who'd believe me about Champion hoodies now? In that rocking boat with you, Mason! I agree with the nature of the neck aches, and appreciate life as each day is a gift. You look great!
I looked up Bali, and the temperature does sound perfect. Do you like Champion hoodies or what? Yeah, the neck aches are no fun. In the summer, I never have aches in my neck. Amen, I feel blessed every day. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Actually, it’s the hypothalamus that regulates body temperature. But I see what you're saying...if the spinal cord’s damaged...signals may not get to the brain to let the hypothalamus do what it’s supposed to do. Even though my injury’s an incomplete one and some messages still get to the brain...regulating my body temperature is really difficult for me. Although someone with a complete injury will stop messages from going beyond the point of injury, period. It’s them who can’t sweat or shiver...although the amount of injury will make one less able to sweat or shiver. I often get autonomic dysreflexia if I’m over heated, and with my right hip and leg amputation...if my left foot gets cold, the right, phantom one hurts really bad. The nerves are a strange thing. If I go swimming in the summer...I end up getting a chill for the rest of the day and can’t have the air conditioner on.
Those are good points. I didn't see the word hypothalamus anywhere in my research for this video but just looked it up and am wondering why I never saw it mentioned. Lol Thank you for watching and commenting!
Yep I h e the same problem but I often get too warm. I have multiple incomplete lesions in my dorsal area of the cord so I also get dysreflexia easily s well
I have an injury at L4/5/S1. Temperature really affects me. Going through hot flushes and realising it’s my feet or legs that are like ice and my face is on fire. I’m starting to think it’s more sci than menopause! I’m 49.
I don’t have a spinal cord injury, however, I find my back gets extremely hot sitting in my wheelchair. This is mostly due to the inability to move away from the backrest in certain situations due to being belted in or because I don’t have something to grab or someone to help me lean forward safely. Do you find being in your wheelchair makes temperature regulation difficult. Also, I’m at the age when hormones are changing!
So basically with a spinal cord injury, you become a lot like a cold-blooded reptile. They are unable to automatically regulate their body temperature and so they have to take similar measures to the ones you just described to maintain optimal temperature. I see iguanas and other reptiles doing that here in tropical South Florida. When my mom broke her neck, the concern was hyperthermia. I take it you live in a somewhat cold climate and so hypothermia would be more of a concern there
I didn't know that and cold-blooded reptiles, but I always feel like one when I'm in the direct sunlight in the summer soaking it up. I think it's cool how animals seem to automatically know what they need to do. Yes, I live in Indiana. Thank you for watching and commenting!
What is your experience with regulating your body temperature with a spinal cord injury? 🤔
