@@Ultimateshrimpcure for making steelhead candy with prawn, did you use egg cure or prawn cure? Wanting to know when to use prawn cure vs egg cure. Thanks!
@ I’ve always used the Ultimate Egg Cure when making the steelhead candy, using similar amounts as I do when I cure salmon eggs. 👍. It’s that time of year again that the winter steelhead are starting to show! I’ll be making a fresh batch in the next couple weeks
Great tip! Quick Q. I cured the egg with your cure, what do you think about adding same oil scent combination that showed here to it , does it work for springer ?
To answer your question, I never drain the juices. After 48 hours most all juices will reabsorb into the prawn chunks as weill as the bait oils added which I absolutely suggest doing as prawn chunks in my eyes are scent sponges.. Pending the total amount of Ultimate Egg Cure used, they can leave a light pink hue but they shouldn't stain with the proper amount used.
Will springers hit these shrimp, i recently ordered your cure from sportsco, thinking i was getting the egg cure one. But I got the shrimp, which im gonna try it anywayz I was just curious if it will work on springers with the shrimp chunks
So the ultimate shrimp cure was designed around coon shrimp and prawns, that being said the prawn chunks “steelhead candy” were always something I did with the Ultimate Egg Cure. I’d advise you to try the Ultimate Shrimp Cure but there is more dye per ounce so they could come out a bit darker. I’d be curious if you do some up. Also, get some coon shrimp if you haven’t for the springers, they’re absolutely a deadly bait down here. We have caught some springers with eggs tipped with the steelhead candy from time to time too!
Yeah funny enough years ago a friend would tip his jig with them and fish them under a float. It drove me nuts when we were in the drift boat as he’d be long lining the hole hooking the fish in the bottom half when I was anchored up top drift fishing. Low holing me!! 😁
They can for sure. But I prefer to leave in fridge for the first month. Again saturated in oil they hold over for a long time and smell the same. Don’t short the cure either 1-1.5 ounces of cure per pint.
@@Mikethefisherman yes, plus a big steelhead there is 7-8 pounds right? I’m shocked more people from the Great Lakes tribs haven’t discovered steelhead candy! The stuff what’s them out this way on the west side!
@@joebrenner4428 natural scents are a huge factor. As much as scent companies do it’s hard to replace the real thing. Artificial works for sure, but profile of a prawn chunk and their natural smells certainly draw strikes where artificial at times doesn’t. Just my .02
@Ultimateshrimpcure Sometimes but I do a lot of side drifting and when they are in there you can throw just about anything out there. The plain yarnies catch just as many as good eggs.
@Ultimateshrimpcure Maybe.Guys on the Kenai swore by fresh cured and doctored up eggs.Like from the day before but I had some plain cured eggs that sat in the refrigerator all summer before I froze them and the following summer I swore they were the best eggs I have ever used and I started freezing all of them. The ice crystals pierce the membrane so they milk out faster which I think was the secret.

@ Thank you Keith! can’t wait to get your cures from the store and make some candies 😄. I’ll check at my local stores here in PNW
@ yes! Also Amazon does carry it as well. The local Bi-Marts are a great source as well
Great video. Can you freeze your shrimp in zip lock bags, and how long can you keep them in the freezer. Going to give this a try.
Yes you can but that being said bait is the cheapest part of the trip. I make 3/4 pint and fish them 3-4 weeks then I make new stuff.
Great info never tried it
You should, super easy to make and as mentioned many times they out-fish salmon eggs!

Yes, I add scents to my eggs the eve before or the morning of…. Is that what you were asking?
I bet these would work for silvers at Riffe lake either trolling or at the dam bobber fishing
Absolutely, we use them in Merwin and do amazing with them. I do add tuna oil from the can and procure corn scent for that fishery.
Do you leave all the prawns in the excess fluid that comes out? Does this stain your hands heavily

Hi, great info! Curious if you use the ultimate shrimp cure with this process or if you prefer using the egg cure? Thanks!
Ultimate Egg Cure for the prawn chunks. Had someone ask for it to be posted here so I did so.

I was float and jig fishing with grocery cured shrimp and wacked Chinook. Took me by surprise. Yes Chinook will hit these.
Do you add your scent oils right away after the cure or do you wait 12-24 hours before adding bait oils?
I add scents immediately so they absorb in the prawns aka scent sponges 😁
I am curious about trying these bobber dogging. Do you have any tricks for fishing under a float with these baits?
Yeah funny enough years ago a friend would tip his jig with them and fish them under a float. It drove me nuts when we were in the drift boat as he’d be long lining the hole hooking the fish in the bottom half when I was anchored up top drift fishing. Low holing me!! 😁
Prawn chunks are a great deadly bait for steelhead I do salad shrimp and cure it and put a whole one on a hook and they eat the whole thing
Yes, that’s a great idea as well! Thanks for sharing
do you make less at a time since they dont last as long
I’ve found I get about a month out of these when they’re saturated in bait oils. So I usually make a pint at a time.
@@Ultimateshrimpcure can they still fish after they are frozen if necessary

@@keitharcher8034 equal parts oil scent I'm assuming
Guys go small in PA because a lot of times the creeks are low and clear. 6lb test 14 hook fly guys go smaller.

How would you go about doing cured salad shrimp?
Exact same way as this process. Add scents like these or for Kokanee add pro cure corn oil and sardine oil
I am questioning the whole bait theory. We run eggs and yarnies and beads and they all produce about the same except yarnies are cheap and easy.
