ICE SHOVE CRASHES ONTO SHORELINE IN FORT ERIE, ON - 02/24/2019

- A historic storm system with extreme winds pushed Lake Erie's ice cover violently into Fort Erie resulting in a rare and incredible phenomenon known as an ice shove or ice tsunami. This formed when extreme pressure built up because of the ice pack being pushed into the extreme eastern tip of Lake Erie combined with a seiche of around 11ft. Massive ice blocks weighing hundreds and thousands of pounds were sent cascading onto the shoreline and far enough inland to impact stands of trees and spill onto Lakeshore Road!

That's the most excitement fort erie has seen in the last 100 years and the most it will see in the next 100 years.
Before refrigeration, this amount of ice delivered in manageable size chunks would be a bonanza for the ice house, and actually quite a blessing.

And another good reason not to live right on the shoreline of the Great Lakes. Beautiful place but dangerous, I’m sure that the unusually high water in the Lakes last couple of years contributed to this tsunami.
its sobering to think that crews of men with excavator tractors would have needed several days to stack ice in that quantity, this was done in minutes

This is insane and incredible!! Born and raised on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, I have see piled ice a few times but not like this and not in when the ice is moving onshore.
It was certainly one of the wildest things I've seen and probably will be a long time before I see another of this magnitude!

Waves are 8 pounds per gallon times yens of thousands of gallons! That's a tremendous force.
There is an ice boom across the mouth of the Niagara River 1 to 2 kms upstream. The boom prevents ice from floating down river from Lake Erie and clogging intakes for power gen plants in Niagara Falls.
The boom broke on Sunday.
Indeed! There were sections of the boom found well downriver. An ice jam also restricted water flow over the American Falls!

That ice appears to be about 1 foot thick. Now picture an iceburg anywhere from100- 400 ft thick moving at a speed of 3 - 8 knots.

Yes and No. I live in Fort Erie and every winter an Ice Boom (barrels chained together to prevent lake ice from clogging the Niagara River) is stretched from Buffalo N.Y. to Fort Erie. The winds caused the ice to move from the lake up the river and broke the Boom, allowing all the lake ice to enter the mouth of the river and Viola, Ice Avalanche. Cheers

@@JohnAFowler - I live in FE too. They keep rebuilding the wall and it keeps getting knocked down. The same phenomenon destroyed the original fort built in the 1760's right on the river's edge. The foundations of it were excavated 2 years ago. Meanwhile, this winter of 20/21, both trees and ice entered a few lakeshore living rooms in Crystal Beach again. Lakeshore property ain't what it's cracked up to be.
