No disrespect, all these politicians, that are not well, need to retire. You are serving yourself, not the American people.

I agree. Age limits would be a good idea. Not only for this reason, but many older people like him are so set in their ways and do not identify with the world we live in today and it makes them vote on things as if it were 1950.

It is NOT about term limits.... the issue is about HEALTH issues that prevent ANY AGE to perform their jobs. I work with middle aged persons that have health issues that often have them out of work and unable to perform work months at a time. Sad, but we are a nation with little "back up" plans to allow persons to be sick and have the proper set up to allow work to continue that has to continue

@@RyanEdmundson the courts are appropriate if corruption is there and a grand jury will concur. If it is fitness for office the voters shouldn’t return them. That’s what happened with Trump in 2020. The voters took care of it before any court could.
Maybe his diagnosis is “Time To Quit Being Senator”. The remedy is to retire while he’s still alive.
The Republican Party (and democrats in the case of Feinstein) don’t want to replace them because the incoming senator will be relatively powerless and not eligible for the high power committee seats that someone like McConnell has.

Honestly, if McConnell were in other professions, he would have been forced into mandatory retirement years ago. Time to put age and term limits on politicians. They can’t be exempt from such if they’re acting like this.

I'm not surprised because you don't want show panic on national TV as it can also rub in with many sensitive viewers, not to mention causing worry to Mitch Himself. I saw a deep sadness among the present, but that is the norm, you see someone bleeding profusely and you start screaming, the person bleeding to death panics even more and his palpitations increase causing probable death, situations of that nature have to be taken calmly.

The man has been in office for a very long time and if he knows he’s sick - and this is now a repeating pattern - he Shouldn’t be on TV.
He shouldn’t be in office- he should be on medical leave figuring out his future - and protecting ours.
He represents America-he is the minority leader in the Senate. He has an accountability to United States of America and all our citizens-not just to himself.

I hope he isn’t getting behind the wheel of his car. As a former Paramedic, I’ve the tragic result from someone’s symptoms that the Senator is showing after they’ve “checked out” while driving. Commercial pilots and apparently politicians have a hard time excepting the facts about their physical and neurological health. Losing the freedom to drive might be a hard pill to swallow, but safety first!

True, but he is also making decisions about policies that affect the lives of millions of Americans in an apparently compromised mental state. That worries me even more than his driving.
I definitely agree on the diagnosis of the Partial/absence seizure. I have those and when I saw the Senator stop speaking and just freeze it looks exactly what I do when I have a Partial/absence seizure. My absence seizures were caused from a car accident that caused my head to slam into the windshield. Absence seizures used to be called Complex partial seizures. When you are having this type of seizure everything becomes muffled in sound, you dont understand what is going on around you and feel very confused. If you try to speak it wont make any sense to others listening to you ( My husband says I sound like I am talking in tongues ). You basically freeze, dont speak and you dont want to move. Even your vision can freeze. Everything is still moving, but you dont realize or see that anything is moving around you. I feel really bad for the Senator if this is what is happening. And Yes, he needs to retire and step down.
Thank you for sharing, as I posted my son was treated for what our neurologist called Petit Mal seizures decades ago, although he was verbal at 3-4 years old, he was much too young to verbalize what he felt. He was on medication until his mid-teens, at which time he decided he no longer wanted medication. The neurologist advised us that he might grow out of them and I just hoped he would, he seemed to be fine without the meds. Since he has been an adult I have asked him repeatedly to get checked, just last night I asked him if he had seen what happened to McConnell

Thank you so much for explaining how you feel during this type of seizure. My daughter has had them for 45 years along with other types of seizures and I've never known what they feel like for her. She has a rare form of epilepsy which includes intellectual and physical challenges. The only thing she has been able to express to me had to do with tonic/clonic seizures. I asked if she could explain to me how she feels during one and she said that for a split second, she feels fear. She couldn't articulate how she felt after that or if she felt anything at all. Again, thank you for giving me this insight after so many years of not knowing.
In the real world he would be called into the boss' office and told it's time to retire.
Oh and I forgot Fetterman. That guy was propped up on a appliance dolly and rolled out in front of the voters with his head on backwards and they still elected him. He needs to go too.

Thank you for your insight. I am in Neurologist and the glaring thing that needs to be addressed is freezing episodes with Parkinson’s disease. He is so parkinsonian with a flat affect. And I need to speak about “absence” seizures. There is absolutely no such thing as absence seizures. Absence epilepsy is a childhood syndrome. That’s consistent with generalized patterned generalized Discharges on the EEG. Complex partial seizure is the correct term for such blank stares. Definitely not a TIA- does not even look like one. Unfortunately, I think he has a neurodegenerative disorder- Parkinson’s disease. This is a condition we’re seeing way too often nowadays.
Parkinsons seizures and narcolepsy all cd cause freezing in particular with an emotionally laden question such as "are you going to run for office in 2024".

I’m a nurse and actually thought he was having a TIA because of the inability to talk. Then went over to a seizure of some kind. Thank you for your insight and explanation as a neurologist. What I want to know is why no one took him over to GW hospital to be evaluated which is six blocks away to be on the safe side.

Would it be early Parkinson’s? There’s no tremors or uncontrolled movements.
If it’s early stage would it respond to dopamine agonist treatment?

He probably denied anything was wrong and didn't want treatment. He may also be doing a political calculus necessitating that he not seek treatment and hope he can make it until whatever event transpires where he's free to seek treatment.
The fact that they don't have the insight and good judgement to step down speaks volumes, this alone should tell people that they are not able to take decisions in any rational way.
I disagree. He *should* step down, absolutely, but he's not doing so for a completely rational reason. He's incredibly powerful in his position and his party relies on that power. He's a shrewd politician and knows that it would be a catastrophe for his party if he suddenly stepped down. -- To be clear, I would be absolutely thrilled if he went away. But in spite of the moments of freezing up he's completely rational.

It is possible that the freezing issue started happening first and that has been the cause of his falls, not vice versa.
It insults my intelligence that they're telling us he was just light-headed! (And I have no medical background.)

UK MD here. I agree - complex partial seizure (the preferred term is now 'focal impaired awareness seizure') is by far the most likely Dx. Having watched both of Sen. McConnell's episodes carefully I think this is a much more likely Dx than a TIA. The duration of each episode is very similar, his recovery more rapid, smooth and predictable than in a TIA. In addition there is no focal motor loss and it isn't just his speech that is affected either - so this isn't a TIA affecting the speech centres; there is also eyelid fluttering and a generalised loss of awareness. Most likely this has resulted from traumatic brain injury after one of his falls. This is a very treatable condition, although I still think he should retire.
I agree. As someone with JME, I’ve experienced this first hand and have been told what it looks like. I can go on with my conversation as if it never happened. I also have myoclonic and grand mal. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
@@amykat75 Thank you for sharing your lived experience. I've always believed that it is folk who have the condition or illness are the real experts. It is by listening to and truly empathising with people that medical doctors come as close as is possible to understanding a condition without having personally experienced it. For instance: -
I have never had renal colic myself (passed a kidney stone) but after seeing many, many patients writhing in agony, clutching the side of their abdomen with anguish in their face and eyes and sweating profusely until we can relieve their pain, I have a deep sense of what the pain feels like and it is said to be one of the worst pains people can suffer. I empathise very much with your own condition and hope that with appropriate support you are able to manage your life around it.

@@gdok6088 Having experienced renal colic more than once, and never having passed a stone (I suppose I should have an echo of my bladder..must be full), I can attest to the incredible pain that your patients have expressed......I have spoken with some women over the years who have gone through child birth and kidney stones and confirm that the renal colic is worse. That is really saying something.

Dehydration as a cause of loss of consciousness is really VERY uncommon. You should have a thorough evaluation by a competent internist and/or cardiologist.
My diagnosis is absence seizure as well. Did not see any obvious motor deficits in either episode. I supposed he could be having TIAs involving only the speech center but I think seizure is far more likely. And yeah, LOL, I love how episodes like this in elderly patients are often attributed to "dehydration". Also a pet peeve of mine.
I've had a number of TIAs (eventually followed by a couple of strokes), and I didn't freeze up. My eyes were moving, and I grabbed onto whatever was nearby as I was extremely dizzy. TIA = way less likely.
My mother had Lewey Body Dementia and a form of Parkinsons. It was her walking that was affected. She would have small seizures like that. She would stare for about 20 seconds then her eyes would roll back and she would vomit. Every time. When she came out of it, she would sleep the entire day. The doctors told me she had these seizures because she was dehydrated. I was her caregiver and always made sure she was hydrated. It was confusing to me.

Watch his eyes. As a Neuro nurse that one thing got my attention. The eyes go up and to the right, an indication that the right side of the brain is causing the problem. Looks like a seizure event. He recovers rather quickly though, no postictal episode afterwards. What about past trauma, scar tissue causing pressure on brain ( he did have that fall)
Debunked by a capital physician. He didnt have a seizure or stroke. He experienced light headedneaa due to a concussion. Its part of healing. Bad video

He's not fine, that's for sure. I tend to agree with the seizure diagnosis. I am not a doctor, but I have had some experience with family members and friends who have various kinds of seizures, and it looks very familiar. He's not having the "shakey-shakey" falling out in the floor kind, but you can tell from his eyes and his posture that he's locking up hard during these events.
He needs to retire and take care of himself. Otherwise, I have a feeling that he's going to die in office. Feinstein is also in that category, I think.
Feinstein isn't running for reelection, and it seems like it would be best if she didn't... Ironically enough, McConnel froze in this video right after he was asked about his plans to run for reelection.

There are a lot of people in gov that need to retire because they past being their best. Running the Gov we need the best, not the just barely making it. This applies to both the old and the young.
It's a TIA, 100% sure. My elderly dad was exactly like this. It kept happening for a couple of years before he finally had a full- blown stroke. He was then bed- ridden in a care home for about five months before succumbing to another one. It was all ghastly and quite expensive.
Agreed, in one of the episodes the corner of his mouth turned down. Classic mini-stroke.

I don't think it's a good idea to have a bunch of senior citizens running for president or serving in Congress. It's happened twice during press conferences, but how much of his time is spent at a press conference? I'd bet it's a nearly daily occurrence, maybe even more frequently than that. We happened to see it when it happened publically, but the odds we watched it happen the only two times it's happened are close to zero unless the stress of a press conference is what triggers them. Which seems hard to believe...
My Mother has the same thing. She has Parkinsonism (which is a differential of Parkinson's). It lasts about 30 seconds or so. She has had a few TIA's and 2 Strokes with semi-recoveries through Rehab. But the freezing up, blank stare, no speaking... for the 30 or so seconds... happens now and then. It will be ongoing because the underlying cause, at his age, cannot be corrected because the evolution of its origin has already occurred.

My great grandmother had many of these. I saw her have many many of these while growing up. Unlike McConnell, she bowed out gracefully. She stopped working, stopped driving, and focussed on quality of life. McConnell should be ashamed of himself for lying to the people.
Is TIA really a possibility? It's clear that his assistants weren't alarmed by his freezing and were accustomed to dealing with McConnell's symptoms which means that his freezing episodes are occurring frequently off camera. In his latest episode on camera, the female assistant spoke very loudly to him as if to jar him out of this freezing episode which indicates, at least to me, that his assistants have figured out ways to release him from freezing, again indicating they are experiencing these episodes more frequently than we know. If these episodes are happening so frequently, I can't imagine that they would be TIAs without McConnell already having several stokes.
You can't "release" someone from a seizure. What happens happens in the brain. In severe seizures you can give IV drugs that may help control the jerking movements like in a grand mal seizure.

Yes most likely he has these when not on camera and his staff is accustomed to it, But the question is is it happening more frequently, or more severely.
Still, it needs to be re evaluated, by at least, an EEG.
TIA and strokes in general present with bilateral symptoms. You might see one side of the face relax. They might have slurred speech or trouble finding the right words or have difficulty with movement. A 30 second freezing up is not consistent with a stroke or a TIA.
I suspect the loud talking was to convey the impression to the press that he's hard of hearing. I don't know if he is or not, but she was trying to make out that he just didn't hear the question properly. At the same time, she something is wrong and is not surprised to see it, so he'd been doing that in private multiple times.

The falls could have been caused by TIAs. In both of the incidents caught on camera, he was standing behind a podium, where a TIA could have happened without necessarily causing a fall. If he was walking around when a TIA hit, it would have been more likely to cause a fall. The head injuries sustained in the falls may have led to absence seizures, but you have to ask yourself what caused the falls to begin with. My money’s on TIAs. I saw my mom have a stroke. She was there one minute and looking spacey and blank the next. She was slowly rubbing her hand in a circle on top of her head, like she was in slow motion, of hypnotized or something. We asked her why she was doing that, and she was VERY SLOW to reply and sounded very far away. We asked her if her head hurt, and she said yes. Of course it hurt. She’d just had a stroke! We’d figured out that was what happened while we were waiting for the paramedics to arrive. She’d been having TIAs for about a month by the time it happened-just 2 or 3-and she did fall during one of them. The stroke she ended up having was due to clots coming from her coronary artery, which was 95% occluded and needed to be stented. Hopefully McConnell’s doctor has checked to see if he needs a stent.
But, clots from your coronary artery would cause a heart attack....... your main coronary artery feeds blood to your entire heart......
I thought I was having a stroke too, because I could only hear this in my left ear.
He is 81 years old, this is absurd. A 70 or 75 year limit is long overdue.
I had a mini stroke aka TIA in 2019 plus I suffer epileptic seizures also chronic micro vascular disease (frontal temporal lobes) with spikes I think he’s experiencing the same cause I had these same similar occurrences right before my TIA and if he has headaches even mild ones they can occur, stress induced, lots of different things can bring them on.
Hi Dr Mike, it was an interesting list of differentials. I’d also add an early stage dementia and perhaps some drug interactions/side effects - I’m sure he’s taking a few of them. How many times has this happened and it WASN"T noticed. That's my concern. I see an oncoming stroke. My mother had the same thing. This, imo, is TIA's. Reason: He had a fall. Most likely a clot somewhere. If this clot breaks free, as we're seeing, it stops brain activity. He freezes. If there's a bigger clot, that's when it gets even more serious.. It's serious now and he needs to be on blood thinners.
Not with a bleed in the brain! Head trauma is a relative contraindication for blood thinners because it can cause bleeding in the brain. If the patient is known to have blood clots in the brain because of bleeding after suffering head trauma they definitely shouldn't be given blood thinners.

I had a stroke and 2 years after I was diagnosed with partial epilepsy and when I saw this footage my first thought was he is partial seizures. My family has even said I just glaze over and wherever I was for that moment in time that I was just gone. If that is what he has he should be made to retire. I’m 55 was diagnosed with the epilepsy at 48 and it changed my life completely. I cannot drive I cannot work because you never know when a seizure is gonna happen and I actually had a seizure while I was driving and I crashed my car. I agree with this doctor. Seriously they want us to believe it’s simply dehydration. I hope he is getting the medicine and comes to terms that his years as a senator are over.

Happy to see that you discussed this topic. I am in medicine, too, and this was & is an important educational tool, especially for those who have never witnessed what a TIA COULD possibly be like. It's something most people hear about but can't visualize it. My own dad had a tia- the left eye went dark for about 4-5 minutes & then slowly returned. Brought him right to the emergency room. It looked seizure like to me. I just could guess the cause. Seizure could be cause of previous falls. Add in his lack of awareness that he had the event.
TIAs - my old dogs have had those seizures where they just stare
His body is simply doing what everyone's body is going to do, especially at his age...dying.
Whatever the case I wish the gentleman well, it's distressing to watch and I cannot start to think how his family and close friends feel.

There needs to be a maximum age to be elected into any office. We shouldn't have these geriatric Congress people on deaths door step making decisions for us.
I’d also argue on term limits. Between the two, that helps keep fresh bodies, minds and ideas in our government.
It’s not his age that’s the issue - it’s his health. I understand pushing for change, but let’s not reject a whole class of people. We can learn a lot from the older generations and they don’t all lose mental faculties as they age.
Regardless of how anyone may feel about Mr. McConnell's political stands, this is a human who is not well. I can't imagine the anxiety and embarrassment he feels when these episodes occur. Add to that the fact that we are so hyper-focused on how he is a lynchpin in politics, that no one is being upfront about his issues and that he is a human suffering. Just imagine your grandfather or grandmother having to deal with this amount of stress knowing that every word, every decision, every announcement could lead to countless unanticipated consequences. It should be absolutley OK for anyone in this situation to, unincumbered, announce they are having trouble, that it is time to focus on their personal health and well-being, and that someone esle will be assuming thier role. That this is not the case tells us we are not being our best possible selves. I can only hope this changes, that we see our fellow humans suffering and offer empathy, compassion and understanding, regardless of thier subjective importance in society. We all deserve to be treated with dignity. We need to do better for each other.

The bottom line is just as you wouldn't want someone behind the drviers wheel having one of these episodes. You shouldn't want a person in the position of making national decisions in that position either. Both are disastrous and dangerous.
