Mitch McConnell Freezing Episodes | Neurologist explains

  • After several requests to talk about this, I made a video discussing Senator Mitch McConnell's recent freezing episodes and what might be going on neurologically. I want to emphasize that I am not diagnosing his condition, as I am not his physician and do not know his full detailed medical history. I am merely speculating as to what might be going on from my own perspective as a neurologist.

My dad was having exactly what this looks like… we had several neurology teams at 3 different hospitals before we got the answer of absent seizures. (He had other things going on but this was the one that no one could tell us the cause or reason of) It took one nurse walking by the room at the right time to say “oh, those are absent seizures!” She was furthering her education in neurology and knew immediately.

@@stagnant13 Well, one hospital was actually horrible and somehow forgot to tell us that testing came back that showed he had developed Epilepsy.. the rest tried their best. She wasn’t a student. She was an RN that was studying to go solely into Neurology. At this visit, we were in the emergency room. At all 3 hospitals, they had cameras on him and was hooked up to an EEG during his stays. They couldn’t see his absent seizures because he would just freeze and not be able to speak. They also wouldn’t show up on the EEG. By the time I’d get a staff member to us, it would already be over. Oddly, and long story short here, my mother coded in the hospital after having a boat load of tests as to why she was so ill. They brought her back, intubated her, still didn't know what was wrong. It was a nurse that suggested they give her a blood gas test. Here no doctor mentioned that. That nurse saved my mother's life. No offense to the neurologist here, I could listen to her talk all night she's so soothing. Your story just made me think about my mother's and how I've always had the utmost respect for nurses.

Empathy? I can't see the version explained as being all inclusive of possible experiences being felt by Mr McConnell
Maybe he was overwhelmed with emotion. The first question about 2026 wasn't a serious question because of his age.
The second statement he was making was jargon filled political nonsense that anyone in their right mind might just stop mid sentence saying for their own peace of mind. More good would be done if more politicians stopped speaking.

Basically, term limits mean that someone in their 60s who's been in Congress for 30 years could no longer run but someone in their 70s who are first time Congress people could continue to run.
We have term limits and call them "Voting".
What we need is required and extensive physical and mental examinations every year and to know if there are issues the public should know about. If there is, depending on the severity, we need the option to retire that individual and for a special election.

Get to work then - ALL you need to do is get the CONGRESS to vote with a 2/3 majority in BOTH houses on a constitutional amendment to have AGE limits (WE have term limits - senators serve for 6 year terms) - and THEN you will need to get 3/4 of the state legislature to Confirm the amendment within a specified time limit. Remembering that the very people you suggest should not be serving would have to vote in favor of your suggestion ALL ALONG THE WAY - even in the states.
      Good Luck

As a child with undiagnosed EDS, over medicated for PSVT, standing up would make my blood pressure drop. I would be light headed and my vision would go black. I had to stand motionless until it cleared, angering my mom who believed I was being lazy or defiant, and teachers who thought I was just obstructing other students just to be a pain in the butt. My father believed interfacing with my doctors was my mother’s job. This problem was never presented to my doctors because all the grown ups who could do this believed I was just a kid seeking validation, so it went on for years. All you can do if you are experiencing this is wait it out. You can’t really walk because you can’t see and you’re trying to stay upright, and your ability to speak effectively is reduced because you’re trying to cope. The aide's job is to make sure everything looks 'normal', nothing to see here, all well, and move on. She likely would react exactly this way if it was the first time this happened or the tenth time. The aide's reaction is not an indicator of anything other than the aide's ability to 'handle the situation'. After the event, behind the scenes, I would expect anyone in McConnell's entourage would have done their best to persuade him to make a doctor's appointment asap. He might well think nothing of it because perhaps he is unaware that anything unusual happened. He looked lost during the freeze and then he looked very confused. He might claim all is well and there's nothing to worry about. The behaviour of the people around him is not based on him getting medical help or not, it's based on their job description. McConnell is all grown up and makes his own decisions. I don't like the man, I don't agree with his politics, but I hope he is getting the medical attention he obviously needs. As for comments about him having to retire, I tend to think he should have retired ages ago and that his current medical problem has nothing to do with retiring or not, except that it would probably be better for him to have less stress and try to enjoy a retirement after a long life of work.

They wish that he would stop glitching, but he is the final production model... maybe they can squeeze another month or 2 before he defaults to non-energized.... I think his 2nd episode indicates early stages of dementia. I worked in nursing years ago, my mother was a nurse for almost 40 years, and two of my sisters were as well. We all did considerable time providing care for dementia patients. Both sets of my grandparents developed dementia, and we saw them through the early stages until their passing. The freeze (most recent incident), is exactly what we saw in patients (and our own family) in the early stages. The 10-20 second freeze, looking to the right, zoning out, and confusion as they became lucid again. These episodes became more frequent as their dementia worsened. Mitch’s “handlers” are obviously prepared for these episodes too, and I’m willing to bet the frequency of the episodes is increasing every day. What his staff and party are doing to him is wrong. He’s being held hostage to his office and political position by his party and staff for votes and signatures. It’s not right. He clearly is both physically and mentally incompetent to perform his duties. He needs to be allowed to retire.

Exactly, I went through this with my Dad. They did give him medicine for Seizures and they did reduce the number of them, but every once in awhile he had one. He was totally out of it and could not remember what happened. He was tested for dementia and alzheimer's. He had dementia, which eventually lead to his death. He could not remember things that happened a few days ago and that got worse as the years went by. His staff knows that he has this, as does his family, that I am sure of. He has no business being in this job, he needs to retire now!!!! His family needs to get him out of this, I would. It is making it worse for him to be in this job.

And in fact - if YOU Follow the situation - Mitch Fell AND had a concussion (It was well reported in the press). We would be having a conversation then suddendly she would just be staring at me, slowly licking her lips which went slightly mauve, then after about 20 seconds would be back with me, not knowing that she had frozen. In the UK we sometimes call these petit-mal or mini-fits (I'm not sure that's the medical term). The first thing I thought of when seeing Mitch McConnell staring into space was he was having exactly the same thing as my mum. Sometimes she would have four or five proper seizures, one after the other, that would put her in hospital.

I've seen something similar in a close family member, about 4 years old. They were experiencing similar, but shorter freezes (absence seizure). On one occasion they vomited. On another they wet themselves. In another case they were standing unresponsive and when I looked into their eyes they were looking up and to their right. Until they had a full blown seizure we didn't realize what was going on. Once we experience the full blown seizure we got them on medication and things improved...but it's scary. They're fine now without a requirement for medication.
It's possible that McConnell's falls are losing balance during a seizure. I'm sure they've given him a EEG by now. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a full blown seizure in his future unless they've already got him on medication.

Otherwise we risk situations like this, or the onset of President Reagan’s dementia during his second term.
