I love rereleases, but I completely agree I have been hit buying stuff in the aftermarket which then got a rerelease, im happy for the people that get a second chance though! But I won't be buying preowned unless it's discounted. Also preordering has almost become meaningless as figures tank in the aftermarket
Aftermarket: not going to lie, if you have a very scarce figure in mint shape it's hard to 'give them away' at the PO rate you paid just as it's equally hard to perfectly determine a fair premium price. I sat on Noragami - Yato - G.E.M. & Iki Hiyori - Megahouse for 2 years trying to determine what was fair. I had both never out of the box and they were both sold on ebay as Buy It Now to different buyers for just over $1K total pre-ebay 13% expense charge. When I saw Yato by himself bring $1K for mint, unopened on ebay 3 weeks earlier much as I would've liked to have gotten that I couldn't consciously bring myself to ask that so chose a lower price with free shipping at $750. To those 2 collectors I thank you. The difference realized put a decent dent in the $11K out of pocket expense I owed a dentist and oral surgeon. (Since paid for thanks to eBay sales of preowned diecast trucks, electric trains last year) PO's really looking forward to: Freeing's Enoshima Junko B-Style Bunny 1/4 scale even though I'm not into Danganronpa. I like certain poses and it helps the figures wear fishnets. Also getting Steins;Gate - Makise Kurisu - 1/7 - Reading Steiner (Good Smile Company) even though with all those computer screens behind her makes the setting look busy. Thank you for adoring Azur Lane 'New Jersey' figure here. I don't know whether to thank you or curse you as she is drop dead gorgeous and I want to PO her now but every wedding version figure I've collected in the past for the collection usually gets sold later, gosh. Plus the USD/yen rate that is attractive now will it be such 12-2024 as some folks are fearing a serious US economic downturn by end of this year: $280 now versus possible $400 or greater then for New Jersey depending on USD/yen ratio, yikes! Like your collection on MFC. Busy being broke, lol. Well, you may rue the day when you get to where I'm at (4catdoorman on MFC) now. I'm lucky my dear non-collector wife is tolerate, understanding.
Oof, I'm really not looking to buy anything on the aftermarket again anytime soon after getting burned so hard last year!! I'd spent about a year hunting for a good deal on the X-10 bunny before eventually deciding to just bite the bullet and pay the insane aftermarket since she was a huge grail for me at the time. It being FREEing, I assumed that there was little to no chance she'd get re-released since she was an OC, and if she did, they'd give her the bare leg treatment. But lo and behold, three months later.... she got a re-release with tights and all, and I'd spent twice what I would have had I just waited a little longer! 😭 While I'm happy for everyone else who gets a second chance at such a beautiful figure, it does sting a bit whenever I think about the situation. It's honestly ruined a lot of the enjoyment I had for the figure at all, and that's probably the part which makes me the most sad about the whole ordeal! The lesson was expensive, but it was learned, and I'm absolutely not buying pre-owned unless it's discounted from now on if this trend of re-releases keeps up.
After spending $100 to get the older ver Wei Wuxian and Akutagawa nendos on the after market just for them to get a re-release, I'm hesitant to buy nendos on the after market now. Also, I've noticed a lot of figures I had preordered are now on sale on AmiAmi. Now I'm being more cautious with preorders cause they might just end up on sale.
Short answer is NO. I noticed that many sought after figures are ending up on the AmiAmi pre-owned for 2/3 of the price when released. At least everyone is having the opportunity to pay a fair price for their figures nowadays and keeps scalpers away. Not to mention manufacturers are doing quite a LOT of re-releases that there’s not even much of a point in Pre-Ordering figures when we know they’re going to end up on the Pre-Owned section a bit after release.
i think it can be ok to pay aftermarket, there are definitely figures that aren't getting rereleased just because they aren't popular or their anime/manga is not getting anything new, sometimes its safe to say an IP is dead. like for example i very doubt the two gangsta figures they made will get remade. they have a pretty high aftermarket but i doubt the audience is there to get them remade. but something like nendos or an active ip OR if the nendos price is getting ridiculously high when it didn't release that long ago, i think its good to wait. and sometimes you wait long enough in this hobby, things tend to get cheap, just because the hype isn't there anymore or people wanna offload what they got.
Man the comments on that freeing 1/4 are unhinged omg. You’d swear that the figure shot someone’s mom lol I’ll never understand why people have to write a novel in those instagram comments instead of just not liking something and scrolling by. 😅 I’m so excited for the JJK season 2 nendos! Insta Po for me 🥰
Right now? In this economy? I think the real question is "Is it worth pre-ordering figures anymore?" By and large, aftermarket figs are binning hard right now, both in recently released mark downs and especially in pre-owned.
I think its great that we're getting so many rereleases but honestly I'm not sure if my grail will get one. Its the Natsume Yuujinchou ARTFX J. Of course a rerelease would be ideal but I'll still always look for a good deal in the after market since the series seems to be pretty niche but has a strong fanbase so all his figures go up a lot in price.
It's very up and down on aftermarket. Most 1/4th scales of any value more than double in cost on the aftermarket, but things like Alter Figures seem to plummet. I paid 220ish for Minamoto No Raikou(lancer) and she's like 160 now I think? So mileage varies heavily. Btw, that Azur Lane wedding figure is gorgeous. I probably won't get it sadly, but it is gorgeous.
I'm so happy all of the BF figures and nendos have rereleases. I thought I'd never get them with those prices
