Precisely!
Yeah, when reading and that kind of stuff I like to put on nature sounds. Or instrumental music at most. Definitely no lyrics.

Plot twist: mozart was so productive because of playing classical music, checkmate scientists
I have ADHD and have always found music helpful in focusing my mind while studying, otherwise it runs off in a million directions and I struggle to get work done. There was a study conducted that I read about which also seemed to indicate that those with ADHD performed better in a classroom environment when music was playing, so I think it's quite dependent on personality
I prefer silence . Music significantly distracts me , especially when I do cognitive thinking .

Using Scottish rock
Same. Anime music has high quality vocals without the distraction. Work great for me.

I am a big fan of white noise. Always makes me feel smooth and it cancels out outside noise :)
Yeah white noise is quite helpful. And there are other things too such as binaural beats, isometric waves and common sounds such as air conditioner or fan. These are available in forms of apps and UA-cam videos and can also be downloaded as mp3.

10/10 would use this video and it's subsequent sources as a source for my thesis. Thanks bruh, you just literally saved me days of research lol.
this may sound weird but I usually study with whale sounds or alpha waves when motivation is low. The novelty and rhythm keep it interesting without being distracting. Alpha waves purportedly also improve concentration/memory. If I'm not in a mood to listen to ANYthing but need to blur out surround sound, then I put on a noise canceling headset. Happy studying everyone!
also if I need a really strong pick me up like I dont feel like studying AT ALL, I'll listen to some good kpop because the beat is uplifting and I cant really understand the words anyway.
Lol me too
This was a good review, but I would be interested in seeing how listening to music affects motivation. It can decrease performance on tasks that are cognitively tasking, but can also get people to associate more positively with working and get over the initial hump of starting on a task.
When study I find myself tend to play my favorite songs from high school. It brings me back to that period when I was studying all day and most diligent. But when I am working/coding any music is okay as long as it can block the people talking next to me.
Without music I get distracted easily thats why I do it.
Is there any other way to improve focus without that?
Ege Erdem I’d recommend studying without music for as long as you can and when you feel like studying has become intolerable, then start listening to music.
Pomodoro method helps
meditation, and track your time
The music part actually gives me the incentive to start studying in the first place
And also, I would never under any circumstances meditate

I have ADD/ADHD probably of the learned variety b/c of my job for that reason and one other i am easily distracted by pretty much all things. i need music as a mask from people generated noise like talking, chairs being moved on hard floors (ie coffee shop), etc. EDM seems to work pretty well w or w/o lyrics, i turn on slacker and go to club hits with some wireless headphones my world becomes one of productivity.
same, but I prefer Ludovico.
Yes, this. The trick is when music is less distracting than the environment noises (and possibly talk) that it can mask. I usually put music on while working:
- when there's too much talk around
- when there's annoying noise (construction, foosball)
- when there's music I like less playing somewhere I can hear
- when the task itself for some reason makes it hard to focus (boring tasks especially) - that's kind of like treating my ADHD like a cat and giving it a ball to occupy itself with
For studying I prefer music less often than for work, but more or less in the same situations. Except if I'm doing flashcards I almost always put music on, it kind of falls under ‘boring task here have a ball’ except it's not really boring.
I love listening to EDM while doing math or coding. I become more productive. But when I have to read scientific papers, I need to switch to instrumental music, so I can focus better.
I listen to classical music really low so I can barely hear it,this will enhance your focus, just enough to hear your thoughts and a little bit of old school tunes 🙏🏽
As a person with ADHD I have to recommend that, if you like it, you should consider listening to instrumental smooth jazz or something similarly quiet, slow and soft toned while doing math. It probably won't work for everybody but if you have ADD or ADHD it might just help you focus. It worked for me. Although this was when I was doing math problems. I'm not sure how well it would work while you're actually "studying". Cuz anything that requires reading becomes substantially more difficult. However it can help you to relax more deeply during breaks by listening to calming music, helping you to focus better after the break.
Thank you ....... i am feeling worthless ....... i wanna do so much but i cant focus 20 or 30 second and my mind is somewhere else do you think i have adhd ?

Thanks - my problem is my intense natural interest in music - so will always prioritise the music. I enjoy it for getting physical tasks that is time consuming -but not intensive - done.
Exactly. This is exactly how I feel. Great video.
Excelente y muy interesante video, gracias!
Music helps me remember things. I'm not gonna listen rnb or lyric driven music, because I'll "go to places" in my head thus being distracted. The keys for me are: It must not have known lyrics, it must be in the background (low volume), usually I use the same music... so I feel like when the music plays in my head during an exam, what I studied just pours out effortlessly, it's like Shonda R's the hum. I face a lot of uncertainty without the Humm.
This is so accurate! It's all about the personality type. I never understood how people can study while listening to music. For me, this is impossible. I need total silence to be able to focus on anything. And yes, I am an introvert. Thanks for the video, it was very interesting.
Speaking of is anyone else supposed to be studying right now?
...yes

Exams in 2 days..
I started listening to music while studying this year to combat stress. And I found my new love in lofi music. It's so endearing. Feels like I am in another world altogether.
Whenever I'm typing an essay I tend to listen to any kind of music since it just helps me think better than with complete silence but if I'm reading then I choose classical cause that's what I like
I LOVE how you reccomended Emancipator. i already listened to him before watching this, and many other types of ambient music artists. It is truly an underrated genre of music.
As a musician I can't listen to music at all while studying lolol chords, beats, time signature all distract me 😢

I'd love to listen to some jazz while I study but I just cant
However I find it doable with simpler genres, like lo-fi

I get the opposite. It gets my brain working and makes me happier. If it's busy work I love music, if it's studying, I can't have music. Either way it gets me motivated.

Yes for US musician...we can't resist it... because it music flows in our blood.
Thanks for always posting study/motivational tips/content, every time I'm having trouble studying (like rn) you post something on the topic and it gets in the right zone to do it.
Summary: no music while studying (at least for reading and high demand tasks), however, if you do, no lyrics and pick music that you like. Pick a song and put it on repeat, an preferably only use music for motivator to start or keep studying.
You are the only person with no BS vids and thank you for thank you for that 🙂
literally just got the bose qc 35, we need more day in the life on the kevin jubbal channel!!! interesting to see how the entrepreneurship is taking off.
Woh! That is so interesting because I myself can not focus on maths/chemistry problems with music. However, I really do enjoy reading with music (even if it has vocals)
“Arousal hypothesis”
Not as exciting as it sounds 😬😂
Before I seen this video I came to very similar conclusions myself! It really is something you have to figure out on your own, and everyone is different!
I put on music at the start of my study session to give me energy. Then I get frustrated as I focus too much on the beat/lyrics, so I just turn it off and keep studying. So its kind of a motivator 👌🏾
I have used music (not just instrumental but any kind of it) for studying and it always works for me
This might sound odd, but what I've experienced and tried is this: I wear headphones when listening to music, BUT I will actually move the other earpad off my ear and have just 1 in. Somehow this makes studying very enjoyable and allows me to focus way more. I'm not sure why it works, but for me it just does.
Ask any music therapist! Patient preference is super important and needs to be acknowledged whenever possible. Music is highly subjective but there is considerable data that shows music and rhythm can help with so many things!
Best channel.
I totally agree that reading and concentrating is difficult with music on... But when I do problems it's a mood lifter..
I usually use it to start my study when I don't feel like studying... As I get interested, I stop it, then turn it on again when I get bored.
I highly recommend:
-understand in silence
-practice with music
Oh, and NEVER memorize
Idoing maths or something you already know and you know you can do it. Like your doing question answers and the answers you already know. You can listen to music.
It's a personal preference. I, for one, cannot stand silence - once I tried to study for a Latin test at a library and those ~30 minutes I was there, were unbearable.
if the best case scenario is to not be affected then the answer is clear . ty so much i just asked myself this question.
If u like BTS I recommend listening to Smyang piano covers of their songs, they’re on Spotify and Apple Music!

Omg I know right! I have their piano books!!!!!
Geez bts is so big I even find it here

everybody should try studying while listening to "the only thing they fear is you" or "bfg division"
they are calm song and they definetly help me study
As a physics student, I actually find that music can be very helpful to keep myself focused while solving long problems and while exercising in different areas of math and physics that I’m familiar with. Since I am not really thinking too deep trying to understand what’s going on (since I already know), the task starts to be more focused on optimizing steps and solving the problem as efficiently as possible. There I’m just getting used to work with the concepts I already learned, and learning the methods and strategies for using then for problem solving, and music becomes very helpful to keep myself focused through the sometimes tedious tasks. But before that, when I’m reading about the concepts and learning how things work, I find music really distracting. Generalizing the idea I’d say (in my experience) music can be helpful when trying to exercise your brain and hone your cognitive skills, but not when trying to learn something completely new or when trying to understand or think deeply about something.
Hi what type of you music you are listening to
I am usually able to concentrate better when classical music is playing since I find it interesting and it helps my mind from wandering or getting distracted.
If u wanna go absolutely stupid go drink a coffee and put noise canceling headphones on with any music in them. You will hear nothing and your brain will go absolutely crazy. As soon as you get focus nothing breaks it. Also keep your phone out of the room. This formula does not fail. I got u guys.
Perfect timing for this video. I was just wondering this while studying for my chemistry diploma yesterday. Thanks
It is also depends on how much brain power you need to fullfill a task.
If it is some routines than I often play walkthrough video of the game that don't want to walkthrough myself but I want to know plot.
Music helps me get into the mindset of studying, so I usually put on a 20 minute lofi och chillstep track but don't restart it when its over. This gets me into a good mindset to continue studying without getting distracted.
What a great video 👏👏
Thanks to the only youtuber who talks about variables that affect performance in studying, which ofcourse anyone is unable to do whole heartedly, because when one is studying pass the exam the next day, ie when it is critical to study one doesn't have the courage to experiment these factors.
I want to be able to study while listening to music but I just can’t lol. My mind gets too distracted even if it has no words. I’ll just imagine au stories with made up characters that fit the ambience of the song for some reason. Then instead of studying I’m crying because my main character dies in my mind or some shit.

When I read I can't listen to music or noise before being immersed in the reading. When I do the actual coding or math computation music gives me a boost. I strongly hate vocal that's the reason I choose my Playlist instead of listening to a radio or Spotify bullshit.
Dudeee yesss, I would usually listen to lyrical music whenever I start solving math problems.

I study with music, that's why I started a music channel 😀
I don't usually listen to classical music but it's been the best music to listen to while studying because of how calm and non distracting I find it. I can usually tell if I am getting distracted or not so I change things around as needed. Thanks for the video!
If its a new piece of music is distracting as i get lost in different parts of the music. When i listen t music while studying its usually a piece ive heard many times before
I usually listen to music and skim thru kinda slowly then after I try to retain the information by studying it without music so I can concentrate better. Works for me.
I don't want to be that guy... But a lot of the studies and facts in this video are very abstract, and most of them are undocumented, therefore leading those watching to disbelieve. Also, there's a lot of conclusions that are being jumped to.
We need more of "that guy"
Totally agree about listening a song in repeat is helpful.
I can’t study in the silence. I hate silence. I feel uncomfortable. I always have to hear some kind of noise. I’m actually more distracted in the silence than when I listen to music. Music genuinely helps me focus. My grades should speak for itself when people don’t believe me.
you should probably practise meditation. sounds like you have a problem being still with your thoughts
Maybe find some white noise like rainfall, a fireplace, or a coffee shop and play that softly in the background.
animakuz
I honestly think music just helps me think. When I need to think music is what helps me relax, gather myself, plan, strategize, and even do work for school/work. When it’s completely silent the silence itself distracts me. I’ve practice meditation before. Not a fan.
IsRyn
Noises like rain actually relax me. Helps me sleep too. I like the sound of fire in a fireplace. That also relaxes me.
Reading your comments, white noise, fireplace, rain, etc are probably better for you than music is. Grades do not say all by the way. You might be able to even higher grades or more subjects ;)
Dude, that's so true. I don't like listening to music when I'm studying things that requires reading/comprehension but, when I'm drawing/calculating/etc, I feel so concentrated that I don't pay attention to anything else, including time/exterior sounds.
My personal suggestion is the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack. It is really good and also really helps me concentrate, but its so beautiful that sometimes I make a break just to admire the music I'm listening to (mostly happens with New Tail, Dragon Racing, This is Berk, Flying With Mother, the duet from Stoic and Valka and -spoiler- the one from Stoics funeral)

Silence is deafening to me and far more distracting than a track (note: without vocals). I'm an introvert, yet it's one of my best studying strategies. Especially if I'm doing math.
I study better if i listened to music, songs more specifically .. the song must be able to hype me (the kind of songs that will be played in a club), slow music won't work .. 😂😂
Same here
Thanks for the stidy tips as always. I have always wondered about whether music could improve my study sessions. Like you, I agree that instrumental music gives me a mental boost when I become tired and my mind starts to wander.
Limelights where are you????
I think it’s probably more personal preference because i for example find it very beneficial to study/work with music and I’m an introvert. I understand that for some people its not beneficial but i think for me personally it’s a good idea.
What if we hear trap music while studying 😂
