  • I made this video back in 2011, but my hard drive crashed and I thought I had lost it. I recently recovered some files off a render drive.
Would you like to support Inside Synthesis? If you haven't tried reverb.com to buy all those vintage synthesizers you want/need/will kill for, please use this referral link ( reverb.com/ref... ).
$10 for you, $10 for me, so I can get more gear and make more cool videos.

I have 2 Venom’s in my arsenal. I have spent many years breeding patches. I have banks for Bass, Pads, Drums, Arps etc. All of them many, many generations of the best-of-breed. They all sound way beyond what the stock banks sound like, and they’re my creations, in my style. One thing I like to do is create twin banks of patches for each Venom where I vary each patches parameters slightly between the pair, such as LFO rate or Filter Freq and Mod wheel destination, and way more. The Venom’s act as one 24 note polysynth, where the banks on each synth are matching, but with slightly different parameters per patch. It’s a lot of fun creating layered twin patches. Massive Pads and Bass. It’s great for playing computerless. I use the Venoms just as much as my Juno 60 and 106 (which I’ve also done the twin bank effect with). I’ll never part with these little beasts. They’re as precious to me as my SH-101 (which I bought NEW! in ‘83).

Any chance you might share those patches? There is just not much around for this synth.

Hey Brian - seconding Ian's question below. Would happily pay something for them too :)

I bought, sold and still own more synths than I can realistically play but I will never sell my Venom... It offers possibly the best value hardware package with some advanced features, still unusual after so many years on gear costing several times more - e.g. audio over usb, audio in with volume control, separate mic in, user programmable arpeggios etc. Yes, it needs a computer to unlock full potential and the editor is.. half finished. It is still a very well packaged instrument on its own.

Still sounds plasticy as ever... but I think plasticy has grown on me.

The engine and its features are closely related to the Micron / Miniak. Google for "Behind the scenes of Venom: Sink your teeth in (Part 1) " if you want more details, Taiho Yamada was involved in many well known synths. I really liked the sound and hardware of the venom, it was a very attractive package during the stock clearance and even worked as full audio interface! Only grape was the need to hook it up to its editor on mac / pc to get access to all parameters. It was impossible to create new multis on the machine itself, you could only swap some parts and edit basic parameters. Sadly sold it again, but really dug the sexy design!

One of the best examples of what this synth can do. I paid $175 for mine - best $175 synth ever.

I have - and have had - a plethora of synthesizers. But the Venom has really caught my heart. I never use the "band in a box" arp sounds and multis, but the sound of the oscillators and the modulation matrix possibilities are out of this world. I wish they didn't kill it off like they did. This synth deserves a chance.

inside synthesis game music is probably what got me into electronic music in the first place. The score for Star Control 2 still holds up.

it is better no trust in M-Audio. They don't have a costumer service. If you have any problem better throw the device to trash. Don't waste your time. M-Audio costumer service doesn't exists anymore.

Who needs customer service for a synth that cost 150 euro, even cheeper now second hand... lots people spend that much on their cellphone abonnement per month :-p Apart from that, i have 4 M-audio items in my studio and they did not break down in the years i have them :-)))

I paid £100 for an immaculate one and I can assure you that you can still use the Zyzex editor. Customer service would be no use anyway as they are all out of warranty and they haven't been made for years. There are people who refurbish them and you can still get parts.
