  • There is a lot going on with Iceland. We still aren't 100% sure that they're competing at Eurovision. My feeling is that decision will be dependent upon them being able to send the artist they want to send. Obviously, these reasons are non-music related and, seriously, I have a lot to say about RÚV's behaviour throughout this Eurovision season...
    But, this is a music video and let's focus on the music for now. Iceland have a good selection here by their standards and a huge step up from what have been poor selections for the past two years. Two of my three favourites have already been eliminated due to headscratching voting (my bottom two qualified, go figure), but the favourite, that is still in the running and in my top three, is, all distractions aside, a good song that should give them a legitimate shot to qualify under any circumstances.
    Because of the non-musical reasons, I'm torn whether I actually want it to win because of everything that's going to follow. But, that's a shame, and I'll still root for it as long as I can.
    Entries:
    Anita - Stingum Af/Downfall
    Bashar Murad - Vestrið Villt/Wild West

    Hera Björk - Við Förum Hærra/Scared Of Heights

    Just to let you know, I was intending to let a level of conversation flow in this comment section around certain topics. But, as I've already received a few nasty messages (some were getting a bit personal, about where I'm from etc.), I've decided to scale back and will enforce some level of moderation.
    As far as I'm concerned, I've stated enough on these topics and won't be saying anymore on these matters. I like the song that was at the root of the discussions and am going to keep the focus on that side of things. I've put the YT comment filter on the highest setting, so if your comment is removed and you think that it shouldn't have been, all I can do is apologise. I know most of you don't create any problems and I appreciate it!

    Bashar is my winner as I find the song being the only one interresting but I'm scared of him winning because everybody seems to hate on him

    • @kaleproject3495

      The worry is that, if he wins, we're just going to have a Eurovision where everyone is going to vote for either him or Israel, even if neither have songs that should be towards the top of the results.
      It all just makes me tired lol.

      @@kaleproject3495 yes I'm really scared of that, that's why I'm hoping Israel will at least not participate because it will be Ukraine 2022 all over again and also because I'm scared of the safety of the Israeli participant during Eurovision but yeah I really hope people won't massively vote for Iceland if they choose Bashar just because he is Palestinian

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому

      @@vincentesc I mean, out of the two, it's much easier for Iceland not to send a Palestinian representative than it is for Israel not to send an Israeli representative.
      All of this could be avoided if people just voted based on the music, but that's perfect world stuff.

    I've already stated my opinion on the whole Bashar's participation ordeal. Hate what RÚV did to him, however, he does have one of the strongest packages in this lackluster selection. If he wins, fans will blame his ancestry, but that's to be expected.
    Anyways, the live performances here were a bit of a mix bag. Some went really good such as "Sja Thig" and "Vestrid Villt" and others not so much, "Biomynd" and "Thjakadur Af Ast". "Fiđrildi" ended up being my winner. I know it never stood a chance, but I really enjoy this sort of lowkey EDM style music. "Stingum Af" used to be my winner and it's not as if Anita didn't performed it well, by all accounts, she did and is a contender now. The song just grew off me
    Edit: Shout out to Sigga who, for the second year in a row, outperformed a mid song. Seriously, she's great and deserves a song equally as great.

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому

      I had Fiđrildi higher before the show, because like you, it is more my sort of music. I think they struggled to get it to really be dynamic during the live performance. Sunny didn't really know how to occupy the down times of the song in an interesting to watch way.
      Also true about Sigga. Two years and two qualifications to the final. She deserves a proper contender next time she competes because she's proven she can do it.

    • @miguelc6740
      @miguelc6740 5 місяців тому +2

      I mean, "Fiđrildi" is a bit of an awkward song to stage, as every song of its genre kind of is tbh. I actually enjoyed the more layed-back approach to the staging, but I see your point on how it might've come across as uninteresting. Also, I think Sunny is a new artist so that should explain why she wasn't the most dynamic performer yet. In a weak NF, she did enough for me :P
      On Sigga, I honestly can see her as a new age Selma Bjornsdottir, if given the right song. She's a very engaging performer! Her attempts so far have been good but aren't quite there yet.

      They've announced Bashar's participation in Songvakeppnin earlier than any other contestant. Practically, politicizing his participation from the get-go. As it was said in the video, political virtue-signalling. Hate that.

    Nice to see that I agree with many takes of yours. I didn't attempt a top myself, but I think that MAIAA & Blankiflúr deserved the final more than Hera & Anita. Sorry, but 'Bíomynd' is my guilty pleasure of this selection.
    My favourite (and the best option imo) is Bashar for the reasons you stated. It has an instantly memorable rhythm & chorus and the country influences (you know how much I love Estonia 2022). Too bad that everyone will focus on the singer and not the song...

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому +2

      To be fair, for me to even like three songs in the first place is a big improvement from Iceland compared to the last few years. My partner also likes Bíomynd, so I'm having to listen to it more than I would normally choose to.
      It would have been cool for Bashar to actually win this selection and then go to Eurovision under normal circumstances. I think he would legitimately qualify for the final, but, I think we all know that a large section of the fandom are going to use voting for him for their own purposes.

      @kaleproject3495 They will, unfortunately.
      By the way, something which I don't get about Söngvakeppnin is why does a 10 song selection need to have semifinals? Also the fact that the songs are required to be sung in Icelandic in the semifinals is confusing, like which version am I supposed to rate as a fan?

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому +1

      As for the SF thing, I think it's just always been like that since they brought Söngvakeppnin in as the permanent selection method (2021 aside). In the early 2000's, it used to be just a final, but they would also use internal selections every now and then.
      In the late 2000's, it was even worse. You used to get heats or SFs with only four or sometimes THREE songs.
      One thing I do like is the performing of the songs in Icelandic, before choosing the language for the final. I usually base my rating on the Icelandic version of the song in the NF, and only consider the English one if the song is chosen for Eurovision.

  • @Zakrusta

    i still have no goddamn idea how iceland messed up so badly in a 10 song selection. 3 of the good songs (Blankiflur, Heidrun Anna and Maiaa) all getting eliminated over Hera and and Vaeb is just shocking. At least Bashar actually has a decent song that i can somewhat get behind (he's my 3rd overall). I might still be fine with Anita and Sigga Ozk but i'm not the biggest fan of both of their songs honestly, which is a shame for Sigga cuz i really liked her last year.

      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому

      I'm in agreement with pretty much everything you said. I'm not really sure what Iceland is voting for this year. Maybe they're just trying to make the final as easy as possible for Bashar? Because that lineup is about as bad as it could've been.

    At first listen, I am not into Bashar but the more I listen the more that I feel like grooving to it. The staging is awesome plus it will bring a definitely different flavor to the current entries on eurovision. Unique sound although lyrically wise, they share the same message with rim tim tagidim. This acts kind of a sequel to that.

    I still can't believe they really chose Hera. Bashar was the only one to give them a qualifying chance, but they went for literally the worst song in the selection just because she's a big name... this stinks of a single digit score in the semi

    • @kaleproject3495
      @kaleproject3495  5 місяців тому

      Hard to know the exact reasoning. Is it because she's a big name and people genuinely voted to send her? Did they vote for her to avoid any more controversy? Or did they just not want to send Bashar and got the opportunity to vote against him in the 1v1 superfinal?
      We'll never know. But it happened...and it's weird.

    I'm from Israel, and I went into the selection seeing Iceland high in the betting odds. Listened to the songs, immediately I thought Blankiflur was the reason they were so high. Given their stance on Israel, I can't say I'm extremely disappointed that they lost it 🙃
    Wild west would be a great pick though, honestly. Should stand out given the field, both in the national selection and Eurovision. Will wish him the best!

    Hi! My opinion on this years Songvakeppnin can be clearly represented in one phrase: UVPSM had more standing out songs than Songvakeppnin this year.
    The only ones that I somehow can recall are Sigga's and Bashar's songs. Sigga is my winner, but she probably won't win, since she was a wildcard and Bashar...the song is nice, but I can't like it very much because of the polytics behind this entry.
