Instead of lowering standards, why not just pay teachers more? In my state, teachers are required to have a master’s degree, yet they make less than $50k starting out (with pay capping out around $85 15 years later). Higher pay would make all the requirements and demands of the job seem worth it/bearable and more teachers would stay. Why are we paying our teachers so little that they can’t afford to rent a one bedroom apartment? No one wants that kind of job.

Part of the problem us the way kids behave. Deadbeat parents, patch key children, social media and Hollywood violence, and drugs.Parents need to learn how to discipline children in love, with firmness! Any one who teaches for 10 years in public schools should get their college debt forgiven and for 15 years, a free Masters degree. All states should increase teachers pay. Don't forget that school teachers hands are tied when it comes to discipline. A child might be really well-behaved at home but a little monster at school because they know they can get away with anything. Bring back the ability to put a paddle to the rear end of a misbehaving child and everyone in the school will behave mighty fast. Could that be abused? Possibly. But if teachers can't discipline students AT ALL and the students know it, then the classroom turns into a place of pure anarchy. And it is made worse if the little monster is as bad at home as they are at school. Make parents sign a legal waiver that allows the teachers in the school to discipline their children at school. That takes care of the legal side of things. Add on the low pay, the long hours, and teaching policies the teachers themselves don't agree with and it is really surprising that this total collapse of the education system hasn't happened sooner.

I think it's mostly kids and parents, not just deadbeat parents. My friend is a teacher and she said she has gotten bullied by parents and they aren't deadbeats, quite the opposite, they are way too involved with their kids' life. For example, doing their homework, when she calls the parents respectfully out on it, the parents either get mad or play the victim. Of course, the parents are setting up their kids for failure. Another issue she said is politics, she is a 1st-grade teacher and said kids are way too involved in politics that it is insane. Like they said they are either democrats or republicans, on how they support Trump or Biden. Make comments on immigration. Which does cause a lot of tension. When she was in 1st grade, she only knew who was running, and that was about it. Her biggest issue was what Hogwarts house she belongs in and if she doesn't miss an episode of Teen Titans. She also found the news very boring.

This country is going down the drain. Schools are so desperate, they are lowering the standards in order to fill positions. As a result, unqualified teachers will be teaching the workforce of the future. What the report doesn't tell you is that the problem is beyond teacher pay. One of the main reasons it's so hard to attract new teachers and retain veteran teachers is unruly students and parents who make teaching almost impossible. Teachers spend more time dealing with bad classroom behaviors than on teaching a lesson. Until the work condition is addressed, the shortage will continue.

None of this addresses the systematic problems that cause teachers to leave. The idea that you can put anyone with a pulse in the classroom (as many states are doing) and have students learn is insulting to a profession in which most hold Master's degree's in their field. It exemplifies the attitudes that created the systematic problems leading to the exodus of highly trained educators from the field. Teachers are often not paid living wages (Support staff often face poverty wages.), face insurmountable workloads (I work anywhere from 11 to 14 hour days all through the school year in addition to summer work.), increasingly more dangerous work environment (COVID exposures, school shootings, and violent behavior from students; A colleague of mine was strangled by the lanyard holding her classroom keys by a 3rd grade student in her class and that student was back in her classroom the next day), and are constantly villainized in the media and by our local district and communities for advocating for our students and ourselves. The question about the effects on students of having just anyone in the classroom is already evident. I work in a teacher leadership role in my school and I will tell you most untrained people will not be able to effectively educate students. Teaching is more complex than most realize. However, due to the fact that everyone has been to school, everyone seems to view themselves as an expert in education. One of the biggest systematic issues driving teacher out is that very thing; the people who make decisions are not educators or have not worked in a classroom in decades. You cannot make effective change to fix this issue until you put teachers in the room where decisions are being made AND respectfully consider and value their input. Instead of these "stopping the bleeding" measures, put educators at the center and use their guidance to effectively solve the issue before generations of students suffer.

The starting salary for a teacher in Chicago is in the low 40k's, depending on which web site you trust. That is what an accounts payable clerk in Chicago makes. If salary is a measure of a person's contribution to society, then starting teachers are considered as valuable, and making a contribution equivalent with, an average accounts receivable clerk.

These kids are going to come out illiterate which affects the future of the country and the workforce. How often did you see students claim they were being disrespected simply for being asked to follow the rules? How often did you see students misbehave? How often did you see students start arguments for the sake of getting attention? How often did you catch students lying? How often did you see students ditch class? How often did you see students try to guilt you so they could continue with their bad behavior? You saw this daily from many students. Stop pretending that the teachers are the evil ones while the students are poor innocent victims. Also, you can tell the difference between a good student making a legitimate complaint and a bad student making a bulls**t complaint.

I would like to see more parents take responsibility for their children. Even in suburban households, parents are too self-absorbed. They are far too preoccupied with their careers to genuinely connect with their kids, set expectations, and instill values. I worked in education for many years at different elementary schools. I saw the result of parental neglect. The neglect shows up in student behavior and low academic achievement. Today's students don't seem to value education and they lack sufficient parental guidance. Those who become first-year, first-generation college students either end up dropping out of college or graduate with no idea about how to navigate the world of work, earn marketable skills, and compete for a job. This is especially true for students of color, who seem to always be candidates for programs serving neglected and underserved students. Why? Why do all other parents seem to have a clue about how to raise their children properly?
If you have children, then it's not just your responsibility to provide a home, clothes, and food on the table. Despite what some people in your community might be telling you, those are just basic, minimum requirements. As parents, you are also responsible for raising your children to become productive, working, contributing members of society. This level of parenting requires that you make the time to have a relationship with your kids, help them to discover their natural gifts and talents, then put them in contact with professionals in a variety of industries who can help them achieve and become high earners.
Someone needs to start holding parents accountable for not doing their job as parents. At present, there is no accountability. Students are now regularly terrorizing schools, other students, and teachers, just to have schools shut down. It is now more than ever important for people to become better parents and give kids higher-quality parenting. If you don't want to get pregnant AND raise kids too, then you must consistently use birth control or abstain until you are ready to grow up, settle down with someone, and take parenting seriously.

Time to “try it out”? With our kids as the Guinea pigs? No way!!! America needs to make the changes necessary to keep the highly educated, certified and qualified teachers we already have! The teacher shortage will never be resolved until that happens.

Simple solution: Homeschooling. The most common argument that there isn't the same social interaction as schools have is provably irrelevant. At any rate, we need to rethink how we do education in the U.S. from a ground-up perspective. This is as good a time as any to do that. Here's a better and complete revamp of the education system: Teachers should teach parents and provide teaching support to parents! Parents should do the actual teaching to their children. That's better for everyone involved and the parents are directly involved in their own child's education. Administered tests should simply reveal areas where the child is weak and allow for any remedial training to happen. And we should move toward a model where some curriculum is required (reading, writing, basic math) so they are a functioning human being that can participate intelligently in society but the child and parents pick specialized coursework that fits the child instead of having everyone be a cookie cutter robot. Completing prerequisite coursework grants access to other courses and they can move freely at the pace that works best for them.

Not a simple solution. Homeschooling requires someone to be at home to supervise and teach to the children. Most households need two parents to work full time to make enough money to support the family. Not all jobs can be done remotely, especially low income parents who work in the fast food industry and such. Parents also need to be qualified to teach to the state standards.

How can homeschooling work when both parents are working? It might be okay on the elementary level. But not in high school where students are taking advanced science and math classes.
And many choose a vocational program, say in Auto mechanics. Or culinary. Or carpentry. Or computers.

@@onespeedlite Actually homeschooling is practical in a lot of situations. 43% of woman do not work outside of the house and online courses that support homeschooling is very advanced compared to 20 years ago. And that these courses are up to "state standards" (in my opinion state standards are joke) but when you look at education in the US compared to a lot of countries. America is fall behind in a rapid pace. And that is with "State Standards"

Hey, people who speak two languages can be smarter and more practical than those who speak only one language! They have an advantage. I am for better border control and legal immigration, but stereotyping shows your ignorant of their contributions. Now, we do need to deal with illegal immigrants by sending them home in a humane way.
