  • 'Fessing up about the perfumes I bought in January 2021. This is part of my low-buy year diary so, just keeping it completely transparent (and hopefully me accountable). January might have been a little unsuccessful in the "low buy" stakes but I am not giving up.
    In order to keep me (and my wardrobe size) in check, I must declutter one bottle for every bottle I add to the collection. Stay tuned for the follow-up "bottles that were booted" video.

    So naturally I added 17 new bottles 🤣

    I have been doing the ‘one in - one out’ perfume strategy for over a year now and it certainly helps keep my collection to a manageable number and ensures that I use everything I own. I recently had a clean out and got rid of five (gave away three and sold two). As a result of my clean out I have a bottle of Guerlain Iris Ganache winging its way to me and a bottle of MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold now with me 😀

    Chanel no 5 EDP is possibly my favourite in the line. I really enjoy wearing it. I would attribute your acceptance of it now to mostly the magic of perfume and the complexity of human nature.

    Every time I've followed someone to ask about their perfume it was either Chanel 5 or 24 Faubourg😀 The recent 24 is nice but crisper, greener, still a very elegant scent though

    I too am loving Chanel no 5, hated it years ago. I've been wearing eau premiere for a few years and when I had a chance to try Chanel no 5 parfum version (blown away). I have yet to retry eau de parfum again. I don't have L'eau version - it didn't wow me. Great video! Amazing haul!

    What a great pick up with the vintage 24 Faubourg, enjoy! I have been keeping an eye out on bottles of this and I might just sit patiently and find a vintage. I will be looking forward to hearing your perception of their differences. When my collection is getting too much for me, I just start to feel really uncomfortable and a little overwhelmed. I feel ok currently (sitting on about 60 bottles), however, I could easily let a few go. Maybe to make sure you follow through on your downsizing is to do what Pep is doing, which I think is to say goodbye to the bottle first before purchasing the new one. As always, you are a delight to watch🤗💜

      Thanks lovely. Yes that’s a good idea. I do pick which bottles are going in advance even if they haven’t left the house yet. It’s that process which helps to slow down the buying :)

    Like you, I am a big fan of Chanel no 5. I own the parfum and the Eau Premiere and adore both. Interesting what you say about enjoying scents you really disliked earlier. In the start of my perfume journey I mostly used citruses and freshies. Then I started to like more oriental style perfumes, and I had a lot of Guerlains. But the last year or so, my taste, or my nose, or maybe my skin chemistry started to change. Everything sweet and spicy turned cloying and sickening on me,it got to the point I could not use my perfumes because I got nauseated. Then I tested Chanel no 5 Eau Premiere just for fun,and I loved it, it also was perfect for my skin. So, now I enjoy more green scents, aldehydes, woods and citruses. No more Guerlains in my collection,but a lot of Chanels!

    I have an unapologetical love for all things N°5. My gateway into it was the EDT and form there onwards there was no escaping it. I have all the iterations and love them all. Today I'm wearing L'eau, after an unusual summer thunderstorm here in Chile, the weather is hot and humid, perfect for citrusy L'eau!!!
    I have yet to come to grips with 24 Faubourg, one of these days.

    I too fell in love with NO 5 after getting Eau Premiere. I have been on a hunt for years to find a classy perfume preferably abstract as I do not wish to smell like a particular flower an actual perfume in the truest sense. I always thought I hated NO 5 until I found Eau premiere, after that I had to buy NO 5 and L'eau too, there is something so elegant about them and ladylike. I find L'eau so delicious to spray over the other two and so many of my other fragrances in the afternoon when they are fading. I do not like the edt though, something i the dry down turns my stomach, very animalic.

    Hi Cherie. I have vintage Mitsouko EDT and prefer the modern EDP (the golden box packaging, the one immediately prior to the current one, I believe) way more, it's more spicy peachy incensey, whereas the EDT has a more musty oakmossy facet. Less sensual than the EDP for sure. Surprisingly I also love the EDP more than the vintage parfum. Regarding No 5 EDP, they have definitely changed it in a significant way. This was my mum's signature in the mid 90s and it was a powerhouse, room filling fragrance, much bolder and richer than the current version. My dad didn't recognize the contemporary formulation either. Would love to see which perfumes you choose to let go! And yes, chasing vintages is definitely a dangerous rabbit hole 😅

    • @TheTopNote
      @TheTopNote  3 роки тому

      Thanks Lara! I haven’t actually tried the edp of mitsouko, it’s strangely hard for me to to track it down for a sniff. Have you tried the modern Mitsouko edt? Would welcome your thoughts on how it compares to your vintage 😍

    • @laranunes6711
      @laranunes6711 3 роки тому

      I haven't tried the modern EDT yet! As a side note, I have read and watched many reviews singing praises of the classic Guerlain extraits and almost trashing the current EDPs, I must have a very pedestrian taste because I think the modern EDPs of LHB, Mitsouko and Shalimar are beautiful, whereas the extraits of LHB and Mitsouko disappointed me a bit... Don't get me wrong, they are stunning but not miles better than the EDPs. I wish we would live in the same continent so I could send you a sample of Mitsouko, I think you would really like it :) it's one of my all time favourites.

  • @yvespiderssmells9956

    I'm not sure if this is true, but i remember that Persolaise had mentioned that the formulation of No. 5 gets tweaked very slightly as time went on to fit people's tastes. Anyway, this was a great haul!

    May I know where do you shop online for fragrances online in Australia?

    • @TheTopNote
      @TheTopNote  3 роки тому

      Hi sure, actually I buy a lot of my fragrances secondhand these days through local Facebook fragrance groups but I also buy online through Libertine, Peony Melbourne and the BaseNote Perth. If I am buying older releases/designer fragrances I may use discounters or buy through David Jones and Myer when they have sales on (they also stock some niche brands). Oligarch in Melbourne also stock some nice niche lines but I haven’t purchased from them (yet). I still buy direct from the perfumers where possible (especially if the Australian stockists only get the big 100ml bottles) and occasionally discounters like Fragrancex and fragrancenet. Selfridges also ships to Australia - although the way they pack their parcels makes me nervous.

    I'm in the same 'no-buy' boat - more or less - clinging on to the rails, trying hard not to fall in.... You're right about Chanel No5 L'eau. But I bought into the hype, especially when it came in the limited edition red bottle(I'm a sucker for packaging) Do you happen to have 51 Pour Femme from Roja? If so, your thoughts, please?

    • @TheTopNote
      @TheTopNote  3 роки тому +1

      I think a “no-buy” would be a little too hard for me at this stage, that’s why I’m aiming first for low buy, or even slow buy! So far I think even that might be a bit of a fail! 😬

      Sadly no. The bottle I just bought is second hand, so - pure luck really -and the first bottle that’s still stuck in the UK I bought in 2019. There were only a handful left then. My best advice would be to have a look at Hiram Green’s Instagram, this is the list where he mentioned you could contact him to find out where the remaining bottles were being sold. instagram.com/p/Bzsi9SrIeRC/?igshid=1finmrep82s05 if there is still some left he may know where to find them?
