  • The $303 Million Project To Hold Back The Sahara Desert In Africa By 2030
Did you know, there is a wall separating north and south across the African continent. But this wall isn’t to keep migrants out, or to keep smuggled goods in check. It is there to keep one type of land safe from another type, which is to stop the spread of the sand.
So, what is the Great Green Wall initiative? What benefits would it reap environmentally, economically, and socially? And most importantly is it the most efficient way among all alternatives to hold back the Sahara Desert? Let’s dive into detail.
So, imagine this: seventeen years ago, Africa’s leaders had a bold vision that aimed to reshape the future of their continent. They dreamed up a thin but mighty green line stretching from the Indian Ocean all the way to the Atlantic. Picture a strip of trees 8,000 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide, tracing the Sahel, the dryland region caught between the vast Sahara desert in the north and the lush savannah to the south.
Fast forward to today, and this vision has evolved into something even more incredible. The Great Green Wall (GGW) is no longer just about planting a row of trees. It's now a rich, complex mosaic of farms, forests, and wild areas. It's about restoring ecosystems and conserving water. It's about transforming rural areas into vibrant economic hubs that produce plenty of food and offer meaningful jobs and livelihoods.

Why don’t they dig like in the ancient days, bring in water. How will these trees get water. I’ve seen what countries can do.
