- All over the world, fertile land is disappearing, swallowed up by the desert.
Africa has been hard hit.
In the space of a century, the Sahara has advanced southwards by 250 km, along a 6,000 km front. The land became barren, and populations were forced to flee.
In Morocco and Senegal, a decisive and stubborn battle is being waged against desertification. Oases are being rehabilitated and a great green wall is being built.

Birds coming back will hopefully help naturally disperse seeds in those areas too, adding to the diversity and density
Thank you Senegal 🇸🇳
Whole Sahara should be covered with lush tall green forest suitable for Soil&climate of the regions quickly
Without the dust of Sahara, Amazon rain forest will die
The Sahara was green 5000 years ago. It will be green again.
Good job
The last phrase isn’t the challenge ! It’s all a matter of greening Africa for Africans. When few years ago it was a severe economical crisis in Portugal, the PM officially asked Portuguese to flew to former colonies to find work and money. It’s false to always think that a project has to be done to keep africains in Africa. African ressources has also to stay in Africa !! Then we’ll see who comes to where. Hatt off for Senegal to keep pushing these project eventhow it’s showen like an European aid. That’s only small part of African money returning to its original place.
The AMOC is shutting down. Meaning a colder europe. Yale studies say that, not me. Europe needs Africa.
@@sdub300 indeed every things are linked but consequences cames from causes and where there’s a will there’s a way. It’s all about equity.
I thought that was a very cringey, very white supremacist, very “Black people are scary and they are coming for you.”, thing to say and such an awkward way to end the video. It just felt very unnecessary and sadly, it reminded me that in general, white peoples are unwilling to help black people unless it is to make more money for themselves or to make sure they are “safe” from Black people. Very opportunistic and very “non-whites are less than whites.” Their anti-Blackness was definitely showing…
90% of the trees died because there wasn't local ownership.
yes the more i researched it the more local private ownership should be encouraged. to much pressure for firewood on the trees and the grass is always short because of the herders.
This will be the challenge of our time.
This is a natural cycle. Hi-tech will fail....we need that old info from the elders.
I was happy to see the article! The whole world and especially the rich countries must help to break the hunger in Africa !
They killed the white farmers who knew how to farm and stole their land .. let them figure it out for themselves or starve
3:20 do saplings have any chance to survive by such planting? Is it not better to use some waterproof sugar cane buckets for saplings, which could hold humus with fertilizer, and collect and hold water for couple of years, till tree will be big and strong enough. Some big 12 liter bucket, made from oiled sugar cane, maybe additionally laminated with aluminum foil. After 2-3 years (maybe longer) this biodegradable material would set the roots free, to grow in all directions.
Thank you Senegal 🇸🇳 the rest of others are lazy even Ethiopia😞
Great project!
You can also bring the mushrooms into your garnder with mycorrhizae.
Awesome story!
"Great European wall" with the same purpose like the Chinese wall and by not paying the workers but keeping the fence proves that
Continental indifference to the science behind Regenerative Agriculture is no excuse. We know what needs to be done: starting from the coast (where the rain comes from) and continually expand the regeneration of the soil till the desert disappears beneath covers is a permanent fix. To be this late with understanding the contribution of fungi and mycelium says how far behind the learning curve they are. The irony? Regen began as a science in France with André Voisin.
These are the NGO's that Traore spoke of. Pushing decent in their host countries.
Why only one type of tree?
Isn't overgrazing problem?
You need to dig bunds as well as tree and grass planting
Avoid planting GMO trees!!!
And rain will come one day a plenty and there is no explanation why. Science doesn’t have an explanation but cannot deny this process. If I tell you that there are levels of existences causing it which are not yet known you may perhaps agree. Perhaps the percentage agreeing is 0,1 % today.
