Warner Bros. Pictures invites you to experience “The Color Purple.” Produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones, the film is a bold new take on the classic story of love and resilience, adapted from the beloved novel and the Broadway musical.
Torn apart from her sister Nettie (Halle Bailey) and her children, Celie (Fantasia Barrino in her major motion picture debut, reprising her 2005 role from Broadway) faces many hardships in her life, including an abusive husband simply called Mister (Colman Domingo). With the support of sultry singer Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson) and stand-her-ground stepdaughter Sofia (Danielle Brooks, Tony-nominated for the role on Broadway), Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood.

Taraji was at her ABSOLUTE BEST in this movie. She gave everything and more! She deserves the compensation she is requesting.

One of those rare instances where a story is consistently done justice. The Color Purple is an amazing book, an amazing film, and an amazing musical both on-stage and on-screen. Now all they need to do is make it a tv show 😜.

I remember watching the 1985 Shug Avery and being taken in by her beauty and attitude. Then I saw this, and I swear I was speechless. She brought a whole new light on Shug Avery, and OMG that entrance is the best!!! They stuck pretty close to Shugs original dress, but this took it a step further and... wow. I caught myself singing this all day today. Red is a color that commands respect and attention here. OH and to see her walk right past Mister and go right up to Celie was the best end to this scene!!!

Just saw the movie...this was excellent! Yes, Taraji gave a great performance and her singing was on point on “Push Da Button”🎶🎤🎵💃🏼. I can’t wait to purchase the soundtrack and DVD. Shug Avery showed out in this wonderful reimagined Color Purple Musical!!!! Thank you to the entire cast👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Fantasia par excellence made me cry a few times during her performances, Danielle, such a beautiful voice...ladies and gentlemen hats 🎩 off and a standing ovation!

IMO Taraji was the STAR of this film. Danielle is getting all the buzz because of Broadway but Shug has A LOT of juicy screen time and lots of songs. And Taraji DELIVERS. Blew me away… missed her when she wasn’t on screen. She should be in the Oscar conversation for sure.

I’ve seen almost no adverts for the movie. No tv junkets nothing. Like they released it and did nothing to let people know it was out and needed buts in seats.
@@ColoringKaria Their marketing strategy may not have been top tier but WB tried to push it as part of the Wonka, Aquaman big 3 holiday releases. I saw it twice and it's just crazy that it's already available for streaming. People have got to stop pigeon-holing movies as "Black movies" just because it has a leading Black cast. That definitely played a part in its underperformance as well.

And the lights being off was a after thought. When they were doing a rehearsal the lights were off and i believe the backstage likes wwre peeking through, he said he had a cartoon lightbulb moment and said "LETS KEEP THE LIGHTS OFF DURING THAT DANCE PART." (Im just paraphrasing his words. This isnt what he actually said.)
