That Fuelling W3 sounds pretty cool if you ask me.
The Indonesian w3 though was definitely the best one saved until last.
I had no idea there was such a thing as a V3 engine until now!
Josh Bacon i really fancied a honda mvx250 a long time ago. There is not much point in a v3. I love parallel twins. These are the best compromise in simplicity cost performance. A v-twin makes a lot of sense but is more expensive and harder to fit in the bike, the rear cylinder is hard to work on and can make the seat hot and gets in the way of the rear suspension making the bike longer. A V4 is very complicated and expensive compared to an inline4 the cbx750 was a much better deal than the vfr750. Faster and cheaper.

Different priorities lead to a different outcome. Let alone if you massproduce engines, you end up roughly at the same price point for a bike with the same horsepower and market segment.
Chris Redfield The VFR750 is not only hands down the best motorcycle engine Honda ever made, it’s arguably the best motorcycle engine ever made period!
The most successful were of course Honda’s Cub engines. But those gear driven cams made the VFR unbearable. It took Ducati decades to figure this fact out.

Its a shame the Feuling got shot down by HD. His engineering was top notch and to this day his company produces parts to replace inferior factory pieces like the cam section of the Twincam engines.
Indonesian people always make an awesome custom, like extreme vespa modification, radial engine bike, car engine bike, and many more,. Best work in low budget, that's what make them special builders.

I am surprised there is not more V3 four stroke bikes, the engine package fits a bike well, keeping it as narrow as a V2 but with the added power of a extra cylinder

The sound of those three cylinder Two Strokes is making me all Melancholy for the past. When I was a kid everybody had those Kawasaki triples. I can remember riding through the Hills above Berkeley on a warm summer night chasing my friend Paul on his Kawasaki.
Indonesian = The Power of Kepepet. Kepepet means trapped, or in a dire situation. Indonesians can get out of a dire situation, as well as other nation. But we do it in a different way. Just like the bike.
We have a kind of strange regulation regarding the volume of the engine. If a motorcycle engine is over 250cc, it is classified as a 'big bike', with some additional taxes because the government consider the bike over 250cc as a luxurious item.
To make it simple:
Honda CBR 1000 RR in my country = 575,250,000 Rupiahs (30,450.4531 GBP) *On the road price *exclude annual taxes and administration fee
Honda CBR 1000 RR in UK = 12,799 GBP (241,839,362.04 IDR) *no data available
So that's why we have a custom made engine with ridiculous amount of cylinders, and no one give a shit about it! :D

Every two-stroke I've ever owned came complete with flashing blue lights in its mirrors, the sounds of police sirens, several trips to the local court houses, 2 driving bans for speeding , and several trips to accident and emergency. At 52 years of age, I fancy another RD500LC but without the aforementioned "accessories" this time around.
The W3 sounds so much better than a V twin!
Now curious to know whether any companies tried to develop Flat-3 engines.

The W3 engine from the last bike was based from a scooter. There, I said it.
The engine is actually a bored up version from Yamaha Mio (which has a single cylinder 113 cc engine), bored up to 200 cc, and they used 3 of them to make a 600 cc W3.

pizza_boy18 I got an rxz which has 133 cc bore and stroked it. It can go at top speeds at 289 km/h most 4 strokes can't even get there let alone its small size
At first glance V3 engine seems simple enough, but eventhough i know the layout i still can't imagine what it sounds like until this video came out, and i realized that i am completely wrong.

The "fan" or "semi-radial" terms make more sense to me than "W" for engines with more than two banks on a single crankshaft, especially with only one row of cylinders.

I suspect the engine of the Suzuki 50cc racer in the video is in fact a 2-cylinder engine. Suzuki were developing a 3-cylinder 50 but stopped when the FIM limited 50s to single cylinders in about 1967 (an act that resulted in all the Japanese manufacturers ceasing to run works 50cc bikes in the world championships), and most reports say the 3-cylinder engine was never shown in public or even fitted in a bike. The much larger 3-cylinder 2 stroke engines in some Suzuki road bikes of the 1970s are not V engines, they are inline with cranks at 120 degrees.

A VR5 engine would be perfect for a performance bike, or a VR3 for a tourer.

A "VR3" would be pointless, because an inline-3 is short enough, and very narrow-angle vee engines (which Volkswagen and no one else calls "VR") exist only to be shorter than the corresponding inline.

I hate to bring it up but you know what makes a V engine, it's the simple fact it's in a V configuration, an inline 3 cylinder radial isn't a V, if you include W config you might aswell include every other engine as a V.
Hasn't anybody but me wondered why a W is called a double-U? It shouldn't be. It should be called a double-V because a W has pointed bottoms like a V, not rounded bottoms like a U. But in cursive, the small w is written with round bottoms... Just one of life's little ironies, I guess.
I suspect the W when it was invented was round like a U. I ( i ) and l ( L ) are the same these days but they weren't. I blame technology for making things confusing. Incidentally a W engine isn't a W configuration anyway, it would need 2 crankshafts.

It's a very rare works bike which competed in GP racing in 1954-6, only a handful were made, and few survive. Chances are there are none in actual running condition. If you want a video of one running, Duke Marketing may have a clip from the GP races.

Great video! The Suzuki RP68 looks like it is a RK67 2 cylinder race bike. The RP68 3 cylinder was never fitted to a frame, have seen other videos where it was stated a RP68 and it was clearly the RK67, not that it matters, both are masterpieces to me!

WELL IUNNO ABOUT THAT, the Volvo I5 is a pretty cool engine, actully I've heard they're quite smooth because of the degrees the camshaft moves before opening an intake or exhaust cylinder, they seem to put out decent power as well.
I'm referring to "everything is better in pairs", but yeah all other instances, 4, 6, 8 cylinders is the way to go, although unfortunately 3 cylinders 90bhp cars are getting really common due to emissions nowadays.

You forgot the Modenas-Proton KR V3, a wonderful 500 cc gp racer built by Kenny Roberts between 1997 and 2003. Probably the fastest of all, surerly the most beautiful and advanced.

Three cyl two stroke engines were already used in popular European cars before WW2 and until the sixties.
You should check out psycho engines if you're interested in wacky engine builds like the v3 here or the w5 you've covered in a previous video, they specialize in cannibalizing single cylinder blocks and pistons into this wacky multi cylinder configurations

Good mention is, that the MVX250F is from 1983, since there is Š instead of 3 in the video. Slovak keyboard layout :) Anyways, great video especially for people like me, who love bikes. So far I only have an AM license, even though I could go for A1, but it's useless for me, since I don't have an A1 bike. (Well, I do, being the Jawa Mustang just because of designed speed, but I've managed to get an L1e class at originality check, so I can ride it with AM license) By the way, how about some video about JAWA bikes?

Kenny Roberts Jr built a Proton 2 stroke v3 GP 500 bike. I think it was the 2001 session.. The bikes have been bought by a South African man and he has restored one of the. It's on UA-cam if you search for it

an inline would have 3 journals on the crankshaft. in the begining of that clip it shows the conrod has a main and the 2 hinging. i dont think its a V, an I, or a W in the tradtional sense. it is actually closer to a radial. he shows another borderline radial. @4:20 (labeled a w)

I would be interested where that figure of 15000 rpm came from for the DKW, 10000 I would believe but 15000 for a 1950's two stroke is horse feathers.
It is common in Indonesia to combine two or more engine making it one engine with double or triple power out of it...
You should really check out Psychoengine 5cyl radial engine made from honda block. In here we got a dozen of single cylinder bike that got modified into multiple cylinder in here tho, but that one is pretty unique

VR, nice that you coveren the Feuling W3, it is not very well known. Feuling and the Indonesian guy both are geniusses. You still can buy the Feuling W3 but it's not cheap.......$ 100.000, 31 a bike is $250.000,11 😂 I once visited the Moto Guzzi museum in Mandello del Lario and there was a model of a W3 engine but it was made of wood. Nice when you run out of charcoal on Elefantentreffen.😅

Proton KR3 developed by Kenny Roberts and Tom Walkinshaw Racing for the 500cc MotoGP class. Never was competitive, not sure if budget or the switch to four strokes killed it.
Combo of both. It's very difficult to take on the might of Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki etc. Kenny was always a bit of a maverick and I was hoping for better results from his team. Damn, that man could ride anything! He totally changed GP racing for the better.
