good gear helps cut the frustration. especially a good and fast processor with no latency.....also a solid DAW. the free ones are ok but can be frustrating. Also if you want to cut frustration WAY down - dump the PC and move to the MAC environment. NO CRASH, no "reinstalling all the s/w" every year....or months.
Amazing Presentation skills , also i purchased Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 250 ohms and its getting comfortable over time also the soundstage is slowly expanding . All thanks to your videos !!!
Also , i would suggest spending more on studio headphones rather than studio monitors because most people starting out like me don't have proper room acoustics for mixing for which i do 80 percent on headphones and 20 percent on studio monitors.
For all of budged equipment videos that i've watched, this one is the best one, it realy is simple, and it gives you the right choise to buy (for me) thanks sanjay.
@@SanjayC ya, im saving up to buy a microphone, either rode m5 for Acoustic or other condenser mic. Do you have a sugestion for a condenser mic (not a handheld mic) around 200$? So it'll be good enough to start with vocal recording and also instrument recording
This setup includes lots of things that I discovered over the years. I envy the people who can simply watch this video and start making music. Thank you for the video!
I use a T430 for my portable setup and it does the job really well. One thing I will say is in Ableton after adding some heavier effects (Soundtoys, iZotope) it will cut out (as expected). However, within this DAW you can freeze tracks which can help a lot with this! Also almost everything is upgradable from the RAM, storage, display, and CPU. Another option I would recommend looking at is the T440P or the T480 if you have extra cash (but make sure you have good gear surrounding it before this kind of upgrade). Keep making the music you love!
I was surprised that Cakewalk handled a lot of heavy plugins including Massive X! I didn't try Soundtoys though. They are heavy even on my 2018 MacBook Pro
You can do a lot with little. You don't need to spend lots of money on monitors. More important is to get used to them and mixing on them. Then you can mix on anything really.
It is great to be reminded that more is not always more when it comes to creativity and the methods we implement. Great to see a budget option, there are many who would be looking for a video just like this one...a reachable start to creating music.
Cool subject, Sanjay! I'm actually typing this on my T430s. I own and use many Lenovo laptops. They are tough as nails, fairly easy to upgrade and repair, and as you stated, pretty cheap. I have a few recommendations as well for those that have a bit more cash to spend: 1) Try to get the laptop with the NVIDIA chipset. Graphics performance will be better and some plugins take advantage of it. 2) The Hybrid drive is nice, but if you can at least go to a 500gb SSD, do it. They are running about $50.00 now, and you will get a huge performance increase, but far less power usage, which will help your battery life if you are working portable. 3) You can hook up an external monitor using the mini-Display port on these laptops. You will need a mini-Display port to convert to HDMI to DVI and you can go to a Thrift Store/Internet marketplace and get them cheap (I find them for $20 or less) OR get the docking station on Ebay for $20.00 and get all the video output ports. And as you mentioned, go for the RAM upgrade as well.
an ableton live 10 suite costs US$749... damn, that's more than double the cost of this music studio! i'm still finding it crazy, thank you so much for the video!!
There is always someone in UA-cam that's have what you need I am going to set up this set up when I will make something I will surely give you the credits because you and charlie puth just gave a push to my music career
Really nice advice there! Plus the T430 is very explandable and upgradable. There is a whole community of its users. I have this one and upgraded the socketed CPU to an I7 with 4 cores 8 threads, 16 GB of ram and have an 120 GB MSATA boot drive and a 480 GB Sata 2,5 " second drive. So it will be more than usable with Windows 10 as an budget mobile audio production workstation!
Great video and I totally agree, the laptop I currently have is so slow and glitchy but I can still make it work to create music. You have to work with what you've got!
I would switch out the speakers and the interface for the beyerdynamic 770 at 32 ohms. And if I’m only making music get rid of the mic and upgrade the keyboard to the akai lpk25 for $70
Side note, the reason I would get the beyerdynamics headphones instead of the speakers is cause you could use your car speakers and your phone as a reference. Keep in mind most people will listen to your music on a phone so making sure it sounds good on your phone is key 🔑
Locutz M listening to it in a car is just for reference, you should be listening to your music on other sources too cause it sounds different in all of them. I Listen to my music on speakers, headphones and my phone before I put something out. I just said car and phone cause those are the most common ways people listen to music
You always have the best videos Sanjay! You explain things so well and are so informative ! You’re helping me so much in my music production journey ! Thanks a million 😄😄😄!!
I feel this vid! My keyboard is literally over 3 times as much as my computer, and my computer works fine. Honestly, if you're on a budget, just get a used computer off eBay. I got a 2009 iMac for $120, with upgraded ram, and it works fine!
@@SanjayC Core 2 Duo, 16gb ram (upgraded recently from 8) I don't know any of the other specs off the top of my head, I'm on a different computer now. It runs a lot of stuff really great, but it's not good for gaming.
I'm so glad I found your channel, I already have a Thinkpad T430 and a budget PC I built, and with the advice I've found on your channel I'm going to be setting up my own studio at home and hopefully producing an album by this time next year.
Cakewalk is great it sounds clean the learning curve is minimal too , I know those speakers been looking at it for a while now ,if I have to get anything from this list would be a computer and a midi controller .maybe some headphones cause where I live I can't use speakers .I already have a Scarlett 2i2 1st gen ,great video sanjay .(edited) I have komplte start too that plugin is Amazing .
@@SanjayC I think headphones are a lot better for people starting out. They're going to be a lot more accurate than cheap monitors. Beyers are great, you can get AKG702s on amazon for 100gbp now though. People are going nuts over those Kali LP6's ,good size for smaller room and 300gbp a pair, that's so good even if they're half as good as they're meant to be.
You are such a champion. I pretty much just click 'like' as soon as the video starts at this point. This wasn't even a video for me, but I wanted to see what you put together for such a price because things like that amuse me just as thought experiments, too :D
I just bought my most expensive piece of gear yet (a godin a6 ultra) and love using expensive stuff. That being said, I have spent forever using the bare minimum, and I've never found a cheap setup to be a limiting one. Props to you Sanjay, good vid
I started with my friends laptop and we would make awesome music I finally asked my mom and told her for over two years I been making music at my friends house she said ok if I get straight a’s but she also said even if I don’t I can spend at least 400 dollars so thanks man this is a big thing for me
Its hard to find good information with someone who knows how to flow as they teach. It's a challenge to refer to all those links and references every time without making one want to stop listening and you kept it focused on the point. lol Great job, great info
Thank you so much for this video! I have been using a Korg digital 16 track recorder for 15 years , though, recently my old Mac (which, I uploaded everything to for simple distribution) died on me. So, basically I'm clueless about the virtual recording world. I went to Best Buy today and the experience was deflating. No one really helped me understand the parts that I would need to start this journey. This video though....what a relief!! I thought that I would be well over 2k for something resembling a studio. Not so though. Thank you again. From one artist to another, I deeply appreciate you and your willingness to share information.
Pretty cool video and I appreciate that you know how to be engaging without being obnoxious. I’m a little older but stepping into Production And this was a good resource for me.
@@SanjayC so sanjay we know you got the laptop for the purpose of the video I am in the market for a budget laptop to do some at home recordings would you be willing to sell it?? Long shot but thought id ask!!!!$
This is very refreshing, while other synthTubers are unwrapping obscenely expensive premium synths, you provide a way for average folks to get started.
Thanks Babak. Music is for everyone. Not only the rich. I've been blessed, but I know where I came from. And this video is for everyone who needs it. 🙏
All true, however a computer with only 4GB will struggle with a project with many audio tracks and plug-ins running in real time. More powerful computer and an external drive would help greatly. It’s true you don’t need super expensive equipment to make hits, actually a laptop alone would be enough if that’s all you got.
What you want to look at in general is retired "business class" laptops. The Thinkpad T430 in the video is one of them, and they can also come with i7s or 8-16GB of ram or be easily upgraded to them. Theres other models like the 15 inch T530, the smaller X230, or newer ones like T440 and T450 and up. Dell has business laptops with pretty equivalent specs too, such as Latitude E6430. If you are fine with a desktop rather than a laptop, Dell Optiplex beefier than those laptops can also be found dirt cheap. Check out school auctions and stuff around you, these machines (laptops and desktops) get thrown out by the pallet when they upgrade their computer labs, that is why they are so cheap in general. Govdeals dot com is a good place to look, then craigslist, then finally ebay. As for what CPU gen - third (Ivy Bridge) or fourth gen (Haswell) Intel i5 or i7 or newer is what you want. Dont go with 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge) or older.
@OG Smokin not yet. The expenses to buy tools scared me at first. Thanks to this channel I cam start work for the money and have a fresh start. Plus I reside in africa, definitely it would be difficult to get the tools he mentioned
Thank you for putting that together. The only substantial drawback that I see with this setup is the limited 1.600 x 900 screen resolution of the laptop. To me every pixel counts when producing music. And the 14 inch screen is another strain on my old eyes. A recommendation for anyone feeling alike would be to spend another 20 bucks on any used 22 inch monitor and there you go *bäm* you got full hd, loads of screen space and even a double screen setup if you dare (having an own screen for the mixer section is worth gold). Again thank you very much Sanjay C!
That's the same budget laptop I recommend for starting in programming and I started recommending it since I was in a really tight budget in my first job, it handles everything like a beast 😎👌
The bare minimum gear is not recommended. Coz we will have to upgrade sooner or later then its a waste of money on the very cheap stuff. Don't get laptop, get a PC. Get good keyboard. Studio monitors are not necessary in my opinion, get a good headphone. Get the Focusrite Scarlett bundle.
I used the Focusrite bundle in my home studio: ua-cam.com/video/vtBi2mfrym0/v-deo.html and it's great! I do use a laptop tho, but it handles just fine, plus you can work anywhere.
I didn't get much help when I first got started, and I want to make sure no one ever has that problem. This is a video I've wanted to create for years. Finally done! Thank you for the support, Samma!
I used to live in Madagascar, the #4 poorest country in the world. Something like $350 was indeed a year's worth of paycheck if you're lucky enough to get a job. If you can receive stuff I can find some cheap garage sale gear and send it to you. I live in the US now and even low wage jobs here make me feel like a rich king when I think about my past. Best wishes for your journey brother.
@gid I always hated the price gouging that happens whenever stuff is hard to find or import in the country I came from. Sometimes they would sell a cheap $25 microphone for $120 or so and it was very bad. I indeed feel very lucky to be here hence me trying out all hobbies etc to not waste the opportunities I have.
Hey man, just watched this video and completely inspired me to sell my Tama rockstar kit and my 5 string LTD bass and amp to get all this stuff. I've always wanted to produce and make my own music. Thank you so much for the inspiration man.
Hey man quick question, so I'm looking into getting this used audio interface but I don't think it comes with the software it's a native instruments Native Instruments KOMPLETE AUDIO 6 Audio Interface and was curious if A it's something worth getting and B without software how do I use it?
Price is cool, video is cool. This will work for beginners. It will let people know what they need, and do not need, with their next upgrades or new gear purchases. Thanks for posting this!

@@SanjayC hai! I wanna say a thing that fl studio gives unlimited time trail. The only limit *some* plugins and you can't save the project. But,it is a lot for beginners to learn. I mean I was did music in trail version of fl studio for 2 years and just bought the signature bundle 2 months ago for this long time gap. And I like ableton live as much as fl studio. Because I want to learn many DAWs such fl,live, pro tools, bandlab. If you make a series of ableton live tutorials in 10 mins time covering each section of live such as arranging workflow and tools to arrange, session view's looping workflow, using fx,importing, exporting, installing plugins etc, etc.,😅 REALLY no one explains and teaches as you do🤗 If you do tutorials I think it'll be useful for lot of people😍

This is a pristine video Sanjay. I really appreciate people like you. Coming from a long time engineer and keyboardist. Another awesome video Sanjay ! This is great for both young folks and those on a tight $350 budget. Being able to create music should be accessible to as many people as possible. There is something good for the soul when you're creating all forms of music...I'm not expecting to sell my music per se or being a DJ professional (well who knows?) for me it's totally therapeutic. However I want to create background music and sounds for what I do in my real work which is Elearning content design and development. I'm a big believer in bringing in new skills to what you're already doing.

this video is amazing, as someone who wants to do this as a hobby, looking at expensive setups made me almost think about it twice, but your video really gave me a push! nice
Takes me back to my beginnings I had a 4gb laptop with 250gb I believe and this was 10 years ago! Now I got a 32gb 1tb i7 gaming laptop and I still believe the upgrades don’t make the producer it is the producer who puts drive into what they do to make the upgrades eventually. Thanks for sharing this man!
Thanks for this video Sanjay. I'm a multi-instrumentalist who got tired of making cover videos because of copyright strikes. I started working on a home studio in the past few months and have been struggling to make sense of cakewalk. I tried watching other videos but they made it seem more complicated. I hope you'll consider making a tutorial for a total noob in the future. All the best. I'll definitely check you other videos. I'm learning a lot. Thanks.

You're welcome. The DT770 are excellent. What monitors are you using right now?
@@SanjayC I'm currently using Presonus Eris e4.5
Love those monitors!
For all of budged equipment videos that i've watched, this one is the best one, it realy is simple, and it gives you the right choise to buy (for me) thanks sanjay.
Thanks Brandon. I appreciate the positive feedback. Are you looking to buy some of this stuff?
@@SanjayCyes, i actually do but i just dont have the money to buy it yet
That's cool. Save up...at least it will be quicker with this setup! :-)
@@SanjayC ya, im saving up to buy a microphone, either rode m5 for Acoustic or other condenser mic. Do you have a sugestion for a condenser mic (not a handheld mic) around 200$? So it'll be good enough to start with vocal recording and also instrument recording
@@SanjayC oh ya, can you make a review about the m audio keystation 88, its not that expensive and i need your thoughts 😁
This is amazing Sanjay. This will definitely help a lot of up and coming music creatives out there. For $350.00 that's a steal deal bundle.
Yeah, for sure. Lots of people say they use this computer too. So if you need a cheap computer, this would be great.
@@SanjayC I'm all set. I'm still rocking MBP Late 2013 model. I'd love an upgrade...so maybe later on this year I'll probably treat myself.🙏🏾
dude this is insane love this simple set up haven't bought any monitors yet n my studio is already over 400$
You can do a lot with little. You don't need to spend lots of money on monitors. More important is to get used to them and mixing on them. Then you can mix on anything really.
This is exactly what I needed. You are a bro!!
Glad I could help
Sanjay feels and talks like an older brother! Appreciate you sir!
Great UA-cam idea, two thumbs up! It shows that we don't need all the bells and whistles to make great music.
So true!
It is great to be reminded that more is not always more when it comes to creativity and the methods we implement. Great to see a budget option, there are many who would be looking for a video just like this one...a reachable start to creating music.
Perfectly said. That's why I wanted to make this video. Music is for everyone to express. Love that you feel the same, Simon!
These are excellent tips, Michael. Thanks so much for sharing!
an ableton live 10 suite costs US$749... damn, that's more than double the cost of this music studio!
i'm still finding it crazy, thank you so much for the video!!
Yeah, you don't really need too much fancy stuff. Just use what you can afford
Hell, I use BandLab. It’s free to use and has everything Ableton and FL have
or abletone costs 0$ if you know where to look...
just use Reaper, free for 60 days and won't stop working after that
Use Fl Studio Demo

Really nice advice there! Plus the T430 is very explandable and upgradable. There is a whole community of its users. I have this one and upgraded the socketed CPU to an I7 with 4 cores 8 threads, 16 GB of ram and have an 120 GB MSATA boot drive and a 480 GB Sata 2,5 " second drive. So it will be more than usable with Windows 10 as an budget mobile audio production workstation!

Great video and I totally agree, the laptop I currently have is so slow and glitchy but I can still make it work to create music. You have to work with what you've got!
Absolutely!

I'm glad you think so. Music is for everyone at any price range
I have an 8-year-old kid who is showing interest in beat making. This is a good budget setup. Thanks, man!!
Anytime. And kudos to you for helping your kid make music!
@@schizobeats5640 most of us don't have car or cars .
Locutz M listening to it in a car is just for reference, you should be listening to your music on other sources too cause it sounds different in all of them. I feel this vid! My keyboard is literally over 3 times as much as my computer, and my computer works fine. Honestly, if you're on a budget, just get a used computer off eBay. I got a 2009 iMac for $120, with upgraded ram, and it works fine!

@@SanjayC I think headphones are a lot better for people starting out. They're going to be a lot more accurate than cheap monitors.

Yes, I agree, Babak A. Sanjay’s video was inclusive - love that about him!
All true, however a computer with only 4GB will struggle with a project with many audio tracks and plug-ins running in real time. More powerful computer and an external drive would help greatly. It’s true you don’t need super expensive equipment to make hits, actually a laptop alone would be enough if that’s all you got.
Is a 8gb laptop good?
Sanjay C I really thanks you for having this video about free software & plugins etc. it's a huge help for a beginner like me.
Glad it was helpful!
2:39 "i'll put a few links to laptops like mine in the description" - i'm interested in those links
Thank you so much! Your videos are high quality, you certainly deserve more recognition. Really helpful
Glad you like them! Thank you!

I totally agree with you about the screen. Would really benefit from any $20 monitor that you have laying around. Thanks for the suggestion.
Started with a USB Mic and cheap studio headphones. Now my set up is worth 3-4k
Wow...nice!
That's the same budget laptop I recommend for starting in programming and I started recommending it since I was in a really tight budget in my first job, it handles everything like a beast 😎👌
Yeah, great little laptop! Can't believe its so cheap.
It's amazing to see how much you really help out everyone, much love Sanjay

Now, if only I had $350 or, in my country's language, about a year's pay in minimum wage.

@gid I always hated the price gouging that happens whenever stuff is hard to find or import in the country I came from. Sometimes they would sell a cheap $25 microphone for $120 or so and it was very bad.
