I have been saving my paper towels since seeing this tutorial about 2 months ago. Now I have enough to make some nice pieces of "fabric" which I'm thinking of using as a journal cover! Tfs xox
Love your ideas, you always thunk of such cool things! Will definitely be using this - I imagine these would make a lovely journal when bound!! - Megan
Thanks Jenni for including my Art Page. What a fab idea. Great to try out even with the intention to do it. I can just imagine the lovely loose effects using watercolour paints. Thanks for the inspiration. :-)
when i taught at an art center for adults with disabilities I stockpied newspapers with all the paint my students tried to waste...I'm now making books.... now that I don't teach them any more, this will be a great new upcycling project...thanks i love it
I love your ideas. using the paper towels for pages in a journal book is wonderful!!! Thanks for sharing this great idea. I can see so many possibilities......... use large shape dies to cut it out! Stamp it! tear to use for borders on cards................. the mind boggles a this!!
I heap praises on you lovely lady, this is a gorgeous way of reusing paper towels. My thoughts also go to Sweepiebum, my little furbaby does not like storms either, so I sympathise with him. Lots of cuddles and warm thoughts. xxxxx
Like Shoshi Platypus, I have been doing this for a while & I even dry emboss them afterwards to add even more dimension & texture. I do use baby wipes too, they do have a different result but can still be used. Fabric paint works well on the end results too. I NEVER throw any towels away, got bags full. Thought I was a bit mad (well I am actually) for doing this, seems not. Sometimes I prefer the patterns etc on these than on a piece I have spent ages on, lol. This is great to share for those who haven't tried it. C :))
You are so right to use up your paper towels. I'm constantly dabbing up paint and the paper towels are full of glorious colour and they look wonderful in collage projects. Why would you want to throw any away? Xx
Thank you so much that's awesome. I've used baby wipes and made leaves 🍃 from them (after dying them green) and they've come out really well. So I'm going to have a go at using paper towels too.
Wish I had the problem of messy used papertowels lol. I don't paint or stamp enough over papertowels-- i sit stuff on scratch paper and dab with fabric rags from around the house- lol. Soo cool though. TFS I'll keep the technique in a playlist
Makes me think of the Artist Ken Delmar ! His story started out saving these scrap dabbing towels and loved the way it absorbed the paint and made designs. Just lovely! Xo -April
So cool they look like expensive hand made papers! I don't know that my neat temperament will allow me enjoy doing this, but it was interesting to see how you created these upcycled papers. TFS Hugs Kristina
I love texture it really changes the value of things I truly love this idea but then again I love everything that jennibellie does such a beautiful mind, I also learned from another artist if you take some fabric that you don't like paint it with white gesso you can make a kind of canvas out of it...
How fun! It makes me sad that I switched to using old t-shirts because of the fun things I could do with the fabric. I may have to buy some paper towels to try this out.
Well I didn’t have any used paper towels to recycle so I decided to make some in the process my hands got quite messy because I decided to use deco art ultra dye instead of paint because the colors are so intense well I grabbed a baby wipe which looked so pretty and to be honest they are thicker than the paper towels so I actually made some with the wipes I did 3colors in swirls like the dye and wipes are wet so it spread so beautifully I haven’t put them together yet but I can’t wait they’re going to be so pretty thanks for the idea
Love this, Jennibellie. I've been doing this for quite a while and never throw anything out lol! I've got some at top right on my blog header - I added some carefully placed gilding flakes to that piece. It's a great technique for adding to existing surfaces, too - I have sometimes used just one sheet because it's supported underneath, and also I've torn the used paper towels into small pieces and reconstituted them - this way you can use it to cover 3-D objects. Also you can crinkle up the pieces as you put them down, for extra texture, and add some gilding wax to the high spots. Some of my best sheets have come from spraying with Dylusions inks - really intense colour! I've got quite a box full now. Endless possibilities - I love this stuff! You can also use paper table napkins, either plain or patterned, and tear the layers apart. I've got a box of those, too! Shoshi
Shoshi, I loved your ideas. Thanks for taking the time to share. I have a question. What is & where can you get "gilding flakes"? Sounds wonderful. Would love to see your pieces. Do you have a web-site? Thanks again for the information.
Donna MAY-BRUNET Hi Donna - thanks for your nice response! If you do a Google search for gilding flakes you'll find lots of different suppliers, as well as technique videos etc. They are little flakes of very thin metallic plastic which are very light and get absolutely everywhere - turn off the fan before using lol!! It's best also to decant them from the tiny box they come in, into something larger (e.g. Chinese takeaway plastic box) so they are easier to use and make less mess. They are sprinkled onto a glued surface and then burnished with a rough sponge which gets rid of the loose bits and you end up with a gorgeous metallic surface. Yes, I have a blog - shoshiplatypus.blogspot.co.uk and if you search for "gilding flakes" in my labels list in the RH sidebar you can see some posts where I've used them. Lots of other mixed media stuff on my blog as well. Have fun! Shoshi
Hey jenni- I love this idea. I scored a few boxes of heavy duty paper towel and I wanna send you a pack of it. I bet you'd easily be able to get by with only doubling it instead of layering 4 pieces. Each sheet is SO thick its already durable. Hit me back and let me know how I can get this to you. I love sharing stuff, and I'm super excited you shared this tip. I'm converts. Feel kinda bad now tho for ALL the paper towel that I've just thrown away. Haha
If you cut open ziplock plastic bags or grab some non-adhesive plastic used for covering books, or a thicker cellophane, you can use that underneath the paper towels so you can move them somewhere to dry, then just peel them off once they’re dry
Wow, very lovely. I don't actually use paper towels like this, but I think I'm going to buy a cheap package from the dollar store, yuck it up with paint and then do this to make tough paper. Love it!!
I save as much as I can but I don't have a lot of space. Great idea, I will try the next time I work on that kind of project. Thank you so much! By the way The Frugalcrafter mentioned you on her youtube channel. She recommended your last video for people to watch. FYI
Great idea.....I don't have a plastic mat to let them dry. I'm worrying about it sticking to my table, can I use wax or parchment paper? Thanks your the greatest :)
Hello jenniebellie! I was just writing how to you get inspired? Because I have lots of bits and bobs, but my brain comes to halt. Love your videos, you have very good ideas! :-)
Wonderful! I came looking for this because I had paper towels leftover after tie dying work my nephew and they are too pretty to throw away, but I didn't know what I could do with them. Question: the paper towels need to be completely dry before applying the glue mix?
This is amazing. Love how you recycle stuff! Question: I wonder if you could run the finished product through a printer and use it as a more durable paper?
Can you share what surface you dried the paper towels on? Mine sticks to a glass pallet I used so I re-wet it and put it on wax paper and it's sticking to that also.
It'll be in the monthly challenge group on journalworkshops.ning.com/ soon hun, I'm editing the vid now & will send email to everyone once I've posted it xx

you can try it hun, I'd wait for them to completely dry out first though & I imagine you'll get a lot stiffer results - I'm going by the times I've used them to wipe up glue or accidentally got glue on them they've dried out quite hard, so I doubt you'll get the flexibility with them but it may still be a cool surface to work on xx
You can use those. Just dry them first. I made a tutorial al while ago on how to make flowers of your baby wipes...... maybe that's an idea for you too.
This is brilliant! It would be so cool to have an art class save up their paper towels for a year then make projects with it.
OMG! All the wonderful ideas going through my head right now of all the beautiful creation i could make with this media.

Would you recommend putting it on wax paper to potect the table. Surface if you don't have a craft sheet.

I thought I heard in another video that you have an etsy shop? Can you tell me the name please, if you do, that is.... Thanks, Christi.

or you could clear gesso over it and use any pen!
Can you share what surface you dried the paper towels on? Mine sticks to a glass pallet I used so I re-wet it and put it on wax paper and it's sticking to that also.
Try taping down some cling (plastic) wrap.
I turn mine into washi tape with double sided tape :D

I bet you COULD do it with a spray bottle but, you'd have to water it down considerably which, mightn't work with this sort of project.
I do my coffee filters, I don't use paper towels
teabags are my favorite to work with....
a favorite😉
