Great, Shiraito Falls area is now much better than in 2011. You didn't mention that you can see Mt Fuji from above the fall. Also, another way for transport is to take the shinkansen to Mishima and then rent a car there, and go around Mt Fuji (I made it in two days).

what are the requirements on renting a car in japan? do i need to get a Driving permit in Japan before I'm allow to rent a car? or a US passport will be accepted?

What's the best way to see this if you dont rent a car? are there tour buses?
By bus! Or train! You can go to the main lake kawaguchi! Everything's around there.
