The North Philly Peace Park will always be personally dear to my heart. I was part of the first park where we cleared the trash to plant the farm. When the city shut us down I discovered Islam through the powerful chanting of the west african sufis that came to bless the park and pray for its revival and safety of which yall see today in this video. Alhamdulillah
In sweden we have system of ”colony slots”. Associations own pieces of land in the cities which are open for farming. These slots are very cheap to rent, like 50$ a year for 40 square meters (a friend told me who rents a slot to grow food). People grow all kinds of things and I think it is a wonderful way of coming closer to nature living an urban life! It’s inherit in human nature loving to watch things grow, a need I would say ^^
I started a community garden in 2008 in my low income, largely Spanish speaking neighborhood. I'm an old white lady. I'm also a Master Gardener. There probably are plenty of people in your area who would love to create not only a community garden but educational programs to expand the garden's impact, like you see in this video. Talk to a local garden club, Habitat for Humanity, a church, the Extension Service at the nearest university, the PTA/PTO, the Salvation Army or other groups working in low income communities, your local town or city council. In other words, YOU can be the "someone" to start a program like this and you will soon find many others who want to help. We need to stop wishing "someone" will create change when we are capable of being that "someone" ourselves.
Get together with like minded people, through a church or school or other community group, find a vacant piece of land (talk to your local economic development committee) and contact your local garden club for help with how and what to plant. Contact a group in your area that knows how to recruit volunteers, like Habitat for Humanity. In other words, instead of wishing "someone" would create a program like this, you can be the one to get that ball rolling. You'll be surprised at how many people will be willing to help.
The amount of shops looted and burnt out last year in these communities, that's why there are food deserts. It's too dangerous and expensive for people to risk their livelihood.
You're right, but if you are trying to bring diverse groups of people together to create something positive, you use emotionally neutral words. So, Black Lives Matter instead of Jail Killer Cops, for example.
Lol, what a joke. If the issue is a food desert, then raise investment and open an actual grocery store. Not a hobby garden that grows 10 carrots a season.
@@breadman32398 "just invest money together and start up another grocery store" So you insult a 'joke' by suggesting another joke? Honestly what you said only amounts to "just don't be poor, problem solved". They obviously have neither the money or means to buy and run a grocery store if they have to resort to starting small scale urban farms to provide any if at all(considering rodents, thieves, or just natural loss of crops) vegetables to their diets.

One is stuck playing the impassioned protagonist in one’s Subjective Narrative of Self 🎈
Not a food dessert, because a dessert is a natural occurrence. But food apartheid.

Food deserts exist around Detroit because who can stay in business when the community is shoplifting them out of business

Wakame Chaka…. I think you need to educate yourself bit more.
@@chrisjm4 how so?
@@breadman32398 it’s a more complicated than just “raising investment and putting an actual grocery store”.
@@chrisjm4 how so? Not having access to food is the problem. Grocery stores provide access to food. They also provide jobs for the area aswell.
