  • Millions of Americans struggle to access fresh and affordable groceries every day. The areas they live in are most often called "food deserts," but academics and activists use another term they say better reflects the systemic racism that created them. That term is “food apartheid.” Here’s how food apartheid plays out in Chicago - and how local community members are trying to solve it.

    This lady talks about accepting responsibility yet she doesn’t even understand the real reason these food deserts exist because to do so would place the blame on the people who live in these areas. These grocery stores are private businesses. They care about dollars being handed to them not by the color of someone’s skin whose handing them money for a service….a service that brings fresh food and greater food options at cheaper prices. Simply these stores are providing a service and often not getting paid for it due to shoplifting, such that they end up losing money. Add in the added security and insurance costs and it makes turning a profit even harder. The irony is probably half the people in these areas are on SNAP and already get free food. It’s not even them who are paying for their groceries. Am I supposed to feel bad they can no longer stick a ribeye down their pants and walk out the store?

    Gonna call BS. There are supermarkets on the poor side of my city. They just don't have all the theft. These are businesses not charities.

      there aren't many grocery stores in the black communities

      Not only did this comment manage to be classist, it is also racist and you profiled an entire minority group. How much time do you spend in the "poor side" of your city? Do you talk with this community and listen to their first hand experiences with food insecurity, or do you just judge them for being in this position due to systemic racism. Why don't you wake up and realize that the US is not a country of equal opportunity, and that minority groups are in these positions becasue the government benefits from it. Internalized racism runs rampant in the US, and you are the perfect example.

      @@graceconnelly9289 and also, what's so racist about wanting to make money? If the store has a theft problem, they're going to close, regardless of the colors in the neighborhood. The stores on the poor part of my town don't have a theft problem. Just because the black part of your town might have a theft problem that doesn't mean it's racist that the store is going to close. But racism is the excuse for everything right?

    This isn't racism it's business. If a store could operate profitably they could. They can't because of rampant theft.

    This is a crime issue, you'll never have needed stores unless you curb the shoplifting and robbery

    Unfortunately we all live in a capitalistic Society to where you have to have money to get the best food and fortunately this area is poor and and many people are on government assistance therefore there's no incentive for grocery stores to visit that location for long-term profitability

    • @robinsss
      @robinsss 2 роки тому +14

      that's not the issue
      they can still make a profit in these areas the reason they don't want to open there is because the crime is so high
      that brings problems
      the residents should call their alderman and demand tough policing to reduce crime

      Wow this statement is so full of crap. Hell with the food assistance the poor gets, they can "afford" to eat better than most middle class. I cannot count how many times I have seen someone pay for a cart of steaks with a damn EBT card. Maybe if they would not use them for others for cash to buy beer and lotto tickets? Maybe?
