The best way I've found to make sure I'm charging enough for my work is to accurately measure all the pieces of a product (including labor! at a living wage!) and total that up so I know my actual cost of goods sold. Then mark up by the amount of profit I want to make on each sale. I made a spreadsheet so that I can just enter numbers for each thing and it auto-calculates most of it for me.
@TheIcingArtist I wouldn't be able to eat the last cake knowing that there was risk of plastic wrap. I would 🤢, and it wouldn't even help if I went over it with a fine toothed comb. They should not have done that to you - though if they did, honestly, I would much rather they put in a balloon than plastic wrap. Yuck. Just no. 100% no.
I love this! As a cake decorator, I really like that you explained why the more expensive cakes cost more. Unfortunately, I just can not justify lowering my prices in this economy, when I can barely even afford the ingredients 🤷🏻♀️

They just accept it when raise my prices every year (about an increase of $0.25-$0.50/ serving usually).
A friend/coworker’s mom used to do cakes for our youngest’s birthday parties. She was pretty good & did it more for fun than for a business. She would use the star tip & the lining tip but did characters. Elmo, Blue from Blue’s Clues etc… she was very good & only charged about $20 for a cake that served 15-20. She also did cakes for other people too & I felt she was losing money. She did start charging a bit more.
Okay, I totally 100% understand that bakers should tell their customers if there are parts of a cake that is not edible bc holy stars that would have been a huge liability... that being said, that was one of the coolest cake cutting experiences I have ever witnessed -- and it was on theme! Also, shout out to Iulia for making these videos so much fun to watch ~ :D Thanks for your hard work on editing these!

I didn't get a free cookie as a kid, but my kids did. Our grocery store has the fruit available for kids. I have no idea on the free cookie situation now since they're all big.

I most definitely used to go to the bakery in a grocery store and got free cookies. They used to have a little wicker basket with different types of cookies in it and I used to make beeline for it. So, you're not crazy Kevin and I share in your nostalgia 🤣 Also, great job Iulia! 🎉🎉🎉
As a home baker I am definitely starting to learn to charge what I’m worth and I find that majority of my customers don’t have an issue with my pricing and the ones that argue are just simply not my type of customer so I don’t get discouraged. Im also learning to say no which is definitely hard.
I also want to mention how much I appreciate you talking about the challenges that us home bakers have to handle. I found myself nodding yes a ton throughout the video.
Iulia is the MVP of editing! I’m glad you mentioned inflation because I know that has affected so much. The bakers need to look out for their bottom line, too.
The research that goes into these cake requests is incredible! I know nothing about Taylor Swift so if I was given the task of a themed cake… that would be SO much work! I totally understand the pricing when that’s included!!
My grocery store used to give a (fresh baked) cookie, and a piece of deli meat if you asked. What was really cool was when you asked for a cookie they would offer you a coupon for 1 free fruit instead of the cookie, so you could get an apple, banana, orange, or pear. I don't think they do this anymore unfortunately but it's a great idea
Kevin, our grocery store’s bakery ALWAYS had cookies out on a tray. Hearing you talk about it unlocked a memory! Every time we went to the store we immediately went to the bakery cause we were excited to see what flavor they had out that day
Last baker could have done a chocolate ball with the red stuff inside (a well tempered chocolate should not be difficult to cut into) Edit. Iulia is indeed a fabulous editor, thanks for your hard work 🫶🏻
I live in Australia so don’t have the nostalgic memories of walking into a grocerie store and asking for a cookie from the bakery but kids can get a free piece of fruit from the fruit/vegetable section of the grocery store. Also, the editing of this video is both hilarious and awesome. Great job Iulia.
For our wedding we did a 2 tier cake that served 30 for 550 with delievery and set up. This was from an at home baker who was actually was the winner of crime scene kitchen we watched during covid. We were very happy with our custom cake. She even offered ro do a free aniversary cake so we didn't need to save tge top tier. 😊
an icing artist video but make it taylor eras themed. hands down best day of my life. TY LAURIE FOR MAKING MY DAY ❤❤❤ (and tysm iulia for editing these vids lysm)
iulia does a fantastic job at editing! as an editor i understand how time consuming and tedious it can be sometimes but her work is great, she always seem to give her 100% so kudos to her!!
Iulia is very very talented.. makes everything look slick and seamless.. love this channel, I have went out and purchased a table top mixer so I can learn how to make homemade cakes and frosting, I’ve been practicing my flower making skills, learning how to make sugar flowers as well.. not as easy as it looks for sure… thanks for doing everything that your entire team does..
I’m loving the new style of this video! It’s super interesting to see all the prep work and how to develop and set up your videos. As a viewer it creates more buildup and makes me even more invested in the end results:) looking forward to what you two do this year!
Our grocery store still does the free cookie! My 3 yr old LOVES going grocery shopping for that reason only😂 Lulia is doing an amazing job I ❤ her editing style
The last one is definitely worth the price! So pretty and much more tastefully designed than a lot of cakes. That would be my biggest issue with spending so much on a cake, when it comes out big, but to brightly colored or just looking cartoony.
'Cause of your channel, I made my own cake and decorated it. Everyone said something along the lines of it looked too good to be real 😆 Thanks for the inspo!
One of our local grocery stores still gives out free cookies to kids. They stopped for covid and then started again after. I didn't know about it either until a worker there told us because my 5 year old told her she was working too hard.. 😂 My kids now constantly ask to go to "the cookie store" 😂
The grocery store cookies! I can't believe you unlocked a childhood memory! One of our local chains did cookies and one did cheese sticks (the breadstick-like product, not like, string cheese or mozzarella sticks - and now I'm wondering if cheese sticks were a regional thing because I feel like I don't see them in grocery stores anymore?) and I vividly remember always going back to the bakery and asking for whichever one was at that store and they almost always had them there behind the counter!
Ulia is is a great editor. And... growing up my mom would always take us to the bakery for our free cookie to eat while she shopped so it definitely really was a thing. As a side note I hope you are nice, and kindly let the home baker know about not putting balloons etc in without telling the customer.
This makes me want to show you how my daughter’s grocery store Wednesday birthday cake came out this year. I was actually very impressed. They didn’t have a deco set for it, I told her she could have freedom with it, and it was simple, but perfect.
I bake the cakes for all the birthdays in my family, and when it’s my bday and they ask what kind of cake I want, I always say a Publix cake lol bc I just love the change and the nostalgia as you said lol and they’re really good too lol their buttercream is so unique and yummy and I can never replicate it.
Love Publix cake…their basic vanilla w/ vanilla icing is what we get most often…we just had one for Thanksgiving & Christmas… The carrot cake bar is also great, and the chocolate ganache supreme w/ yellow cake, instead of chocolate, is my personal favorite!
@@Lynastia-TheS1lly please share when you do lol altho I think it’s premade and shipped it them or it’s like packets of premade stuff they mix with other stuff.
I so relate to Kevin forgetting what he was about to say midsentence, but I'm sure Iulia can edit him appear coherent. I think, visually, I liked the most expensive cake the best, but I really appreciate the writing on the grocery store cake, and I liked the simplicity of it. The $50 cake didn't fully capture the Taylor vibe, but the snake was adorable. I think How to Cook That made a blank space cake when the music video came out, or something with a similar idea, and I'm sure it wasn't a balloon.
These cakes made me so happy and how fun was that last one! 🔪 What would you use if you were to make a cake similar to that? Shoutout to Iulia for her great editing skills! 👏🏻
When the How to Cook That channel made the blank space cake, she made a box out of white chocolate the same shape as the cake, then put it on top and frosted over everything to make it all look like cake.
Iulia is a great editor and i would never skip that part im glad yall inlcuded you going to get them it was really fun to watch and he has the best vibe lol and i also start sentences having no clue where there going and my memory is awful 😂
Kevin u are hilarious, Iulia you do a fantastic job keeping up withthese two, Laurie I loved this video, more plz looking forward to the next!! Hope u get to see TS soon!!
hey! I am a cake decorator in Texas. My personal experience is that most customers are willing to pay a higher price when they value what you do and have confidence in how amazing the product is. 🎂
I started baking and decorating cakes for my friends and family as a “hobby” and honestly I didn’t realise how time consuming it was! From baking the cake/s (usually multiple) wrapping and cooling it, cutting the cakes level, making the frosting, layering the cake & crumb coat, colouring the frosting, final coat, setting up your piping bags, (again usually multiple colour, and multiple piping bags), finally decorating the cake 😮💨 Then the clean up!!! 😩 It’s literally hours and hours and a couple of days work to make an awesome looking cake and I think all you professional bakers out there are under appreciated and you should be charging whatever you think your time is worth for the cake that is ordered! ❤️
No way! I have those very same nostalgic memories of going into a grocery store with my mom and asking if we could walk by the bakery section, so I could ask them if they have any cookies and they almost always did until I was like a preteen and then it appears they stopped doing it entirely.
@@weaverofbrokenthreadsyou saying that reminds me of the fact ours always had little cheese tasting trays on top of the counter until they stopped for some reason 🤔
Iulia does a great job editing these videos! Also just the fact that Lauri knew exactly what he meant by his secret'; and I love Kevin's road trip conversations 😆
I worked at a Loeb Grocery store and we definitely had free cookies! It was called the Loeb Cookie Club, with a cookie of the day and even had a mascot, Kookie! (google helped me remember his name!)
My father owned his own bakery. He left a good paying job to pursue baking which is what he loved. So many people complain about price but don’t realize HOW MANY HOURS it takes to do stuff. I watched and helped him for years and he always made it look so easy, and it’s really not.
I have a good friend who is a baker and does custom cakes and cookies, and her prices reflect her work, which is amazing. She also does allergy-friendly stuff, and takes on challenges with joy, but she also charges for her time and grows her own organic flowers and would never put latex in a cake unless someone specifically asked for it.
'I can go to the grocery store and pay.......' My response to this is, yes, you could. I'm not selling mass manufactured grocery store cakes, I'm selling homemade and individually decorated custom cakes. You can pay $25 for a pair of sneaks at Wally World, too. But you don't go into the Nike store and order Jordan's expecting to pay what you would for Walmart shoes!
I remember the free cookies and infact not too long ago at my small town grocery store the baker came up to my kids and offered them a cookie! I dont pay for cakes, I either make them or use a box mix. I try to keep birthday parties to $100 for food and decorations so all these cakes are out of my budget, but I do understand why they cost what they do.
I’m guessing cake #2 used premade icing in a tub. That’s why it tasted flavourless. They just added vanilla to mask the shortening. So they just had to colour the icing. Don’t know how cake #3 for $65 made any money?? Edible image paper isn’t cheap. Cake #4 is pretty much what $110 will get you. As you know ingredients are pricey and you have to make a profit. But yikes a balloon in a cake…oh my. Soooo dangerous unless you’ve been forewarned. Last cake is the winner for the price. And great editing job Iulia. 👍👍
@@TheIcingArtist Oh ya….can’t believe baker didn’t tell you about the balloon!!! Giant no no. Technically, they could lose their license if you reported to the health department 🫢🫢
@@Clarky1951plus, I have a latex allergy. So I mean obviously I can't eat a cake with a balloon in it but a popping balloon aerosolizes laxtex all over the place.
@@owentheslug Absolutely!!! I mean I have arguments all the time on my cakey fb pages. Especially about “real” flowers, and wires in cakes. I use to sell cakes, and I know there are strict health guidelines and protocols. I never made cakes for people with specific allergies, like nuts or celiac. Because I couldn’t say I had a 100% contaminant free kitchen. Couldn’t guarantee no cross transfer. Would never take the risk of making someone extremely I’ll, possibly life threatening.
@@Clarky1951 oh, also? florist tape not food safe, flowers (real or fake) unless purchased specifically for food product not food safe. sounds like you know this but it's amazing how many people don't
My hubby says when he was a kid, they went to this one little store and could buy a grab bag for a quarter that had pieces of cookies that had crumbled, broken, etc. he said they could get a good amount of cookie like that. And sometimes, they would get cake, donut and pastry pieces too.
Number 4 would have had to go straight into the trash & i would have to had someone else clean the whole area it was in. I have a laxtex allergy, I know it's not a super high number of people that have it but it's not unheard of. I would rather have any cake from the grocery store than something where they opt to add things like that. At least the grocery store tells you what's in the cake.
Happy New Year! I bought an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen for my grand-daughters 5th birthday last August and only spent $38. It had a Unicorn on it and served 8-10, but it was really rich, so it went further cause a small slice was filling. Hi Julia! You do an awesome job with editing. Tell Kevin I watched the video from start to finish....LOL LOL LOL
Lori, Crazy Idea. 💡Order 3 Cakes decorated from each bakery for exact same price and theme. Order 3 iced but not decorated cakes from these bakeries in same flavors they give you in decorated cakes. Do your normal taste testing and give each a score. Then take these cakes to the streets and set up a table for passersby to give their scores on each. Have 1 slice cut out of each one to reveal the look of inside but leave rest in tact. Give folks sample taste from the undecorated cakes. Have them score on a 1 - 10 on each of the following categories and then divide by 4 to get their final (averaged) score. 1. Technique and Construction (skill) 2. Taste (including flavor, moistness) 3. Value (what you got for the money) 4. Creativity and Overall Eye Appeal Let’s say I scored like this: #1 - Score of 5, #2 - Score of 7, #3 - Score of 8, #4 - Score of 6, Grand Total scores are 26. Divided by 4 = FINAL Score of 6.5 Complicated? Yes but, I’d say this would help to get fair solid scores.
whenever a creative (whether that's a baker, artist, musician, etc) is given freedom they always seem to go above and beyond... specially if they appreciate the overall theme
I personally prefer just cake/dessert centric videos, but I understand that this is starting to move towards a "lifestyle"/funny style video channel and I think I just have to accept it.
For me - for a custom cake and if you know the cake from there is good/what you prefer, then of course the price is worth it. If they only want to pay grocery store cake prices, go to the grocery store then! Nice work on the editing Iulia, the unsung hero 😊
2 years ago for my 40th birthday I had this natural bakery near me make a Star Wars themed cake. It was so delicious, and nobody could tell it was gluten free or vegan. Also I loved that she uses natural dyes for her icing. It cost probably $40 for a reasonably small cake.
Kevin and Laurie are very funny just naturally but Iulia's edits make them even funnier. I love this channel thank you all so much for your hard work and the laughs.
The cookie thing was definitely a thing and I'm so glad someone else remembers it. I tried to tell my husband about it one day in a store and he didn't believe me and said that if it did happen it's because I grew up in a small town, but I remembered it happening when I visited family too.. so glad someone else says this happened

@@TheIcingArtist and yummier than any gelatin :D Doesn't need to be white chocolate either but it fit the best in the situation (but it is funny to have white chocolate chunks and pretend those are pieces of bone or such :D)
Yeah like chocolate bombs just a smaller one near the top would been fine 🤣
Yeah, when Ann Reardon did the blank space cake on her channel (How to Cook That) she made a box out of white chocolate and put it on top of the cake, then icing over everything.
We all love when Kevin is on camera, even though he doesn't like it :)
Thank you Iulia for your amazing editing skills!
Kevin’s talks in these videos are comforting and IULIA IS A QUEEN for editing these videos. We love you!!
Publix still does the free cookies for kids. The tradition still lives!
Great job Iulia!
I most definitely used to go to the bakery in a grocery store and got free cookies. They used to have a little wicker basket with different types of cookies in it and I used to make beeline for it. So, you're not crazy Kevin and I share in your nostalgia 🤣
Also, great job Iulia! 🎉🎉🎉
IULIA you're amazing. We need more Keven tells Laurie what colors to use
I love Iulias sense of humor and editing skills ❤
Great editing by Iulia. Clean cuts, transitions and great additions for the asides. I am really impressed by her skills.
The research that goes into these cake requests is incredible! I know nothing about Taylor Swift so if I was given the task of a themed cake… that would be SO much work! I totally understand the pricing when that’s included!!
the only thing I remember of Taylor Swift is a commercial with cute kittens!
yeah i only know romeo and juliet, and blank space. i have no freaking clue what these "eras" are people speak of . lol
@@calliemyersbuchanan6458they are her albums, but she fully immerses herself and her albums are about her life at that point.
Hi Iulia! Kevin not being able to track his current thought in a sentence has me dying 😂
Thank you for asking about the cookies, I remember getting a free cookie when I was a kid. Thank you iulia for great editing videos!
I had no idea!! I was really missing out!
Some stores had amazing ones where you could get the actual bakery cookies & others gave you like an Oreo
They used to offer store made chocolate chip cookies to my kids up until covid.
All the grocery stores in my area gave a free cookie when u asked that brought back memories ❤
Kevin, our grocery store’s bakery ALWAYS had cookies out on a tray. Hearing you talk about it unlocked a memory! Every time we went to the store we immediately went to the bakery cause we were excited to see what flavor they had out that day
I appreciate all of the work Iulia does to keep us entertained
I love all the small content kevin brings in the videos and the edits on all these videos have been amazing Iulia
Last baker could have done a chocolate ball with the red stuff inside (a well tempered chocolate should not be difficult to cut into)
Edit.
When I was a kid the local supermarket butcher used to give us a free mini Frankfurt. Not as good as a cookie, but not bad either lol
IULIA is bae ❤
same here in the uk x
Some stores in the USA have free fruit for kids too. Usually a small orange/Clementine or a banana.
I love the idea of kids being allowed a free piece of fruit in the grocery store. It helps promote healthy eating, even it’s only a little bit.
Used to get a free little red sausage, cherio from deli. Even my kids got them on occasion before you could get fruit.
In Croatia near Rijeka , standard cake for 12 people is 50-60 euros. If you want some picture or some figures than is from 80-120 euros.
Iulia thanks for your hard work! Love that you guys wanted at acknowledge her 😊❤
For our wedding we did a 2 tier cake that served 30 for 550 with delievery and set up. This was from an at home baker who was actually was the winner of crime scene kitchen we watched during covid. We were very happy with our custom cake. She even offered ro do a free aniversary cake so we didn't need to save tge top tier. 😊
Go Iulia and love seeing Kevin talking to the camera while collecting the cakes. Always look forward to the videos 😊
THIS
I want Kevin to take us on trips every time, and for Iulia to never stop with that top notch editing!
Iulia's editing is top-tier! Also...so much more fun watching Kevin pick up the cakes and losing his train of thought😂
an icing artist video but make it taylor eras themed. hands down best day of my life. TY LAURIE FOR MAKING MY DAY ❤❤❤ (and tysm iulia for editing these vids lysm)
I've been dying to do something Taylor Swift for so long!!

I enjoyed watching Kevin go and get the cakes, and Iulia's work on the videos is absolutely phenomenal
iulia does a fantastic job at editing! as an editor i understand how time consuming and tedious it can be sometimes but her work is great, she always seem to give her 100% so kudos to her!!
Thank you Iulia for making such wonderful videos and edits! they turn out amazing everytime, congrats for being on the team!! 👏
I like the ride along with Kevin picking up the cake. And good job Iulia editing.
Iulia does a great job editing these videos!
She's the best!!!
Publix gives free cookies to children chocolate chip or sugar cookies in the bakery area
Love Publix cake…their basic vanilla w/ vanilla icing is what we get most often…we just had one for Thanksgiving & Christmas…
The carrot cake bar is also great, and the chocolate ganache supreme w/ yellow cake, instead of chocolate, is my personal favorite!
Yes! I need to find out how they do their icing. I know the QA manager of the ATL bakery, so I guess should just ask lol
@@Lynastia-TheS1lly please share when you do lol altho I think it’s premade and shipped it them or it’s like packets of premade stuff they mix with other stuff.
More road trip moments. I want to see Kevin’s reaction as he sees it before Lori does.
Iulia is a fantastic editor! Loving the time with Kevin.
Thank you Iulia. You do amazing work and help bring peace to my days when I see that there is a new Icing Artist video!!!
I love seeing Kevin picking up cakes! Please keep this in the future. so much fun!
IULIA YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Seriously thank you for editing these awesome videos for Laurie
Iulia clearly does an amazing job. You should give her a raise.
Iluia clearly does a great job with attention to detail regarding your videos. ❤

HOW DIDN'T I KNOW THIS
We used to get a piece of sausage from the butcher at the grocery store
I definitely remember getting free cookies 🍪
@@weaverofbrokenthreadsyou saying that reminds me of the fact ours always had little cheese tasting trays on top of the counter until they stopped for some reason 🤔
I remember the free cookies.
Iulia does a FABULOUS job on editing!! Always love the videos! 💕💕💕💕✨
'I can go to the grocery store and pay.......'
My response to this is, yes, you could.
The grocery store cake was so cute in execution. I love it. So sweet and charming.
Thanks kevin for the road trip and thanks Iulia for your work on the editing. You are amazing.
Iulia, you're doing an amazing job with these videos!
Yes!!!! I agree with everything! And the last cake blew my mind, but omg the balloon lol!!! I was shocked!
Thank you Iulia for the wonderful editing!
There's the blow up!
Thank you Lulia 💕
My hubby says when he was a kid, they went to this one little store and could buy a grab bag for a quarter that had pieces of cookies that had crumbled, broken, etc. he said they could get a good amount of cookie like that. And sometimes, they would get cake, donut and pastry pieces too.
I-U-L-I-A loving that you spelled out your name as Kevin said it. We all love and appreciate your behind-the-scenes work! ✨✨✨
Well done Iulia for making Kevin’s road trip be hilarious! Laurie’s not bad either 🤣
Loved all the cakes but I’m a big Swiftie too ❤
Number 4 would have had to go straight into the trash & i would have to had someone else clean the whole area it was in.
1. Technique and Construction (skill)
2. Taste (including flavor, moistness)
3. Value (what you got for the money)
4. Creativity and Overall Eye Appeal
Let’s say I scored like this: #1 - Score of 5, #2 - Score of 7, #3 - Score of 8, #4 - Score of 6,
Grand Total scores are 26. Divided by 4 = FINAL Score of 6.5
Complicated? Yes but, I’d say this would help to get fair solid scores.
whenever a creative (whether that's a baker, artist, musician, etc) is given freedom they always seem to go above and beyond... specially if they appreciate the overall theme
Laurie, you're definitely the queen of custom cake decorating.
I personally prefer just cake/dessert centric videos, but I understand that this is starting to move towards a "lifestyle"/funny style video channel and I think I just have to accept it.
I agree with you. Sometimes I like more behind of scenes but most of the times I jump to the next section from the video. A variety would be awesome 🎉
Hey love from South Africa ❤
I'm also from south Africa😅
For me - for a custom cake and if you know the cake from there is good/what you prefer, then of course the price is worth it. If they only want to pay grocery store cake prices, go to the grocery store then!
Nice work on the editing Iulia, the unsung hero 😊
Thanks for all of your hard work Iulia!
Iulia’s editing is top notch!
She guarantees the video keeps the entertaining pace
The baker in the second bakery is a fellow swiftie that's why she worked so hard
