the way this reporter treated coco was exactly how my school's communication director treated me during an interview about justice for Asians against hate crimes. The school's communication director questioned my ability to speak, my ability to work and live here with very ignorant questions only because my English was great and I had so many supporters at school. She treated people who spoke English not so well very nicely because somehow that made her comfortable. But with me she questioned every single thing. Just like the video, the white supremacy, prejudice, arrogance and otherness is real. Coco handled it gracefully and she was beyond beautiful in the video. We should also be brave to speak up when confronted with microaggression and supremacies. We will always miss you Coco - rest in peace!
I still remember seeing her performance live on TV and feeling mesmerised by her talent and skill and so freaking proud of her as a fellow Hongkonger and Asian. Thank you, Coco, for sharing your music and your light with us throughout the years. You're free from the worldly darkness that tried to take away your light. May you rest in peace and shine brighter than ever among the stars. P. S. The calibre of the questions was shocking.
She was so ahead of her time, when the world was still so steeped in ignorance, as shown by these reporters, that we never truly appreciate her. RIP Coco
I think the host only wanted to get to know Coco more in depth. She can't let go of coco's hand that's a very high form of adoration. You don't see that alot in Hollywood.
I felt the host wasn’t meant to be rude or offensive, she just wanted to confirm and not assuming anything, actually she is very much supportive Asian artist to be successful and go big in state, by saying this is the time, very positive and open minded to diversify
Sure if Coco is a Caucasian, the reporter wouldn't ask what her native language is, being Caucasian does mean they can speak English either. What does someone's native language has to do with Oscar?
🤔 The first time I saw this I thought ths interviewer was a bit rude too. But later I thought ok perhaps she simply wanted to let the audience know more about her cultural background and highlight her multilingualism. Since Asians in Hollywood were pretty rare in those days I guess. She may have come off as a bit direct in the beginning but she was then she was pleasant throughout. I'm from Hong Kong too and it's so sad we lost such a talented person. RIP Coco 🙏
What a reporter, what difference sing for dozens people and sing for billions. Besides not everybody in the world watch Oscar. Even in US, I am sure not everyone do.
Why did she say her first language was English? It wasn't, her first language is Cantonese. She moved to the US when she was 10 or something, that's definitely not early age. And she's got an accent too.
Linguistically, yes 10 years old is still really young. You wouldn't expect a 10 year old to read sophisticated article and understand everything. She said her first language is English because she is more comfortable speaking/thinking in English..... And just because you have an accent, it doesn't mean you aren't fluent or comfortable speaking.
