      @@FACTUAL_KEY"Head" is the difference in height between top of the water at the intake and the outlet from the turbine.
      Basically the "falling height" of water doing the work on turbines.

      @@celcorsystems1890 Head is the amount of water above a turbine. Flow rate is more complicated so I recommend watching a vid on that.

    This must be the most dumbed down version of this topic.
    Kaplan turbines can be used in several applications. Francis turbines are used because they are CHEAP. Kaplan turbines with their adjustable pitch can almost be as efficient as a Pelton turbine. The Francis will never come close but can be installed and run cheaply. That's why there are so many of them, mainly in China, India and other undeveloped countries. The Francis is the oldest and least efficient of the three.

    Interesting , I assume that this is also applicable to gases as well . So most fans are axial as are wind turbines (horizontal axis) and fans that develop higher pressure are listed as mixed flow (like a pump) .

    flow rate = Power/efficiency*water density*specific gravity*head
    *if the problem is to choose what type of turbine to use
    *but efficiency is not given, does it mean efficiency is neglected and cancel out?
    *to determine what type of turbine you need H= head and M = flow rate to graph/plot

    • @daviddavids2884
      @daviddavids2884 6 років тому +2

      imo, the shape and orientation of the vanes result in upper and lower zones of energy conversion. the lower more-curved part of the vanes converts reaction force, as the water tries to fall 'straight' down (what a kaplan does). cheers
