Whoa! Amazing video. Where I live there is a lot butterfly. There is a black butterfly with thin yellow diagonal strips. May I ask what butterfly is that?

Maybe for one of your longer videos, but I’m curious as to how species that do not rear their young manage to “pass down” knowledge. I can see a bear cub or a kit learning from a parent not to eat that pretty swallowtail over there. But how does a crow get the message?

Great question Sarah and not one that can be answered in its entirety here. The basic answer is that an inherent fear is genetically coded within the DNA. Fears can be learned and innate. An animal that is willing to eat that toxic butterfly, not having an immunity to the toxin, will probably not survive to pass on its genetic code. But an animal with a genetic predisposition to avoid eating that toxic butterfly will likely pass on its genetic code which includes that fear of toxic butterflies. These fears can be expressed from ancestral DNA, new mutations and the likes. It really is much more complex than that when encompassing all food webs, animal arms races, mutations, etc..
You're right, it would be a great topic for a longer video. I did make a short one on why we humans fear snakes and spiders. ua-cam.com/video/Slo1MtR8qOU/v-deo.html Thanks for your question!
