  • The Dutch city of Den Haag, internationally called The Hague, was liberated from the German occupation during World War 2 in May 1945.
    The Hague is know world wide for being the city of peace, among other with its Peace Palace that houses the International Court of Justice.
    It also is and was the residence of the Dutch government, as well as the capital of the province of South Holland.
    On May the 5th, the whole of the Netherlands annually celebrates the liberation of our country in 1945. But in fact The Hague was not liberated until May 8 when the Canadian troups entered this city.
    On the evening of May 4, 1945, the news came that German troops had surrendered in northwestern Europe. Some residents of The Hague carefully took to the streets, but they were sent home. The liberation had not yet been officially confirmed and the liberators had not yet arrived in The Hague. Anything could still happen. On 7 May, for example, dozens of people were killed in a shooting on the Dam Square in Amsterdam.
    Even when the liberation was confirmed on 5 May, it was not yet celebrated in The Hague. There were still armed German soldiers and agents everywhere. It wasn't until May 8, 1945, when the Allies entered the city, that the celebrations could start.
    The film starts with footage of food droppings near The Hague on the 29th of April, a week preceeding the liberation, to aleviate the hunger that the Dutch population suffered during the hunger winter. This time the Allied bombers have a different load than bombs.
    Subsequently we see the troups enter the city and being welcomed by the major on the balcony of the town hall surrounded by large numbers of very enthusiastic citizens, followed by many similar scenes in the rest of the city.
    In the film we also see close-ups of the arrested top of the National Socialist Movement, in short the NSB, a political party that was founded in 1931 and collaborated with the Germans during the war to run the country.

    Muziek:

    There are two more episodes in this series to be released in the running-up to Dutch liberation day on 5th of May later this week. They will be about the liberation of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Next year we intend to continue this series with more liberation footage of other Dutch towns and cities (like Eindhoven, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Giethoorn a.o.).

    1:26 Groenmarkt; zicht op de Bonneterie. De stoet komt vanaf het Buitenhof. Het oude stadhuis bij de Grote Kerk is daarna te zien. 3:14 Een ander deel sluit zich aan bij het oude stadhuis. 3:19 Rond de Grote Kerk. 4:00 Buitenhof. Zicht richting Spui. 4:18 Binnenhof op de achtergrond, en daarna "Vijverdam"/Gevangen poort. 4:33 Paleis Noordeinde. 5:18 weer bij oude stadhuis. 5:58 Laan van Meerdervoort. Daar is te zien dat de bovenleiding van de tram weg is. Sinds 17 november 1944 reden er geen trams meer in Den Haag e.o. omdat er geen elektriciteit meer was. Sinds 1940 moest het OV steeds verder inkrimpen, terwijl particulier verkeer helemaal ophield door brandstofgebrek. De toch al sterk beperkte buslijnen werden op 6 september 1944 al stilgelegd, omdat er geen rijvaardige bus meer over was. Veel bussen en trams waren naar Duitsland verdwenen. Op 11 juni 1945 kon na groot herstel de tramdienst beperkt hervat worden. De busdiensten begonnen pas op 1 februari 1946, op zéér beperkte schaal.

    Leuk Rick, dat je nu ook historisch materiaa tot leven brengt en van deskundig commentaar voorziet. Dat is naast de prachtige gerestaureerde, sfeervolle en van mooie muziek voorziene filmen, weer een een hele nieuwe dimensie. Voor ons kijkers in ieder geval een mooie duik in ons verleden. Ik herbekijk je materiaal regelmatig weer, het is bijna therapeutisch ;) Dat je maar nog lang deze prachtige en steeds professioneler wordende hobby mag uitvoeren. Fijne dag! Ronald.

      Dank je wel Ronald. Het is een leuke hobby. Voorlopig ga ik ermee door, bij leven en welzijn en zolang UA-cam niet voor de derde keer moeilijk gaat doen, want historische kanalen zijn ze niet bepaald vriendelijk gezind: Mijn kanaal is al twee keer helemaal, zonder enige waarschuwing noch overleg, demonetized (terwijl ze vervolgens alles opstrijken). Dat noemen ze dan een "Partnership"...

    • @ronnie9187
      @ronnie9187 2 роки тому

      @@Rick88888888 Ik vermoed dat UA-cam extreem gevoelig is voor alles wat zelfs maar ruikt naar Copyrights en eventuele claims. Ik werk voor een groot IT bedrijf en minstens maandelijks moet ik een "compliance" trainging doen, wat je wel niet mag zeggen, doen, wat je wel/niet mag posten op social media, of een cadeaubon mag aannemen of weggeven, etc etc etc. We worden geregeerd door advocaten en een claimcultuur ben ik bang, er zal best vroeger iets fout zijn gegaan, maar het was allemaal wel een stuk relaxter.

    • @Rick88888888
      @Rick88888888  2 роки тому +1

      @@ronnie9187 Dank je, maar copyright is absoluut niet het probleem want tegenwoordig wordt alles door UA-cam met een algoritme op copyright (en ook add suitability) gescand. Nee, je wordt demonetized als filmmateriaal al eerder elders op UA-cam door iemand anders is gezet. Dat noemen ze "re-used content". Hun algoritmes (en ook druiloor reviewers) zien het verschil niet tussen grondig gerestaureerde en ingekleurde versies.
      Het ergste is dat wanneer je kanaal wordt demonetized de advertenties gewoon onder je filmpjes doorgaan en UA-cam dan 100% daarvan opstrijkt.

    My Mom grew up in Scheveningen
    Scheveningen was the small sea harbour next to The Hague, and was vital for the Germans, so Scheveningen became ''Sperrgebiet'', meaning everybody not working in the harbour needed to be evacuated permanently,
    Because her Dad worked at Port Control, the family was allowed to stay there during the war, and always had fish to trade, and were able to survive the 45 Famine.

    What type of small (film-)camera was it that the woman on the truck had, seen from about 2.34 to 2:38? Looks more like a modern videocamera! Was it a new, very small 16 mm? Or anything else?

    my oma passed last year, she was very young when the nazis took over the netherlands. at her funeral they talked about a photo of her at the dutch liberation parties. i dont remember much but i remember apparantely there was a drunk chicken or something lol. she didnt really talk about those days much which i cannot blame her, she wouldnt have had the best memory and wouldnt want to remember such a terrible part of the history of the country she is from. the last time i think i saw her was before lockdown, i remember her having a bunch of papers on the history of her then house in england, it apparantely used to sell guns or something. always had interesting stories and i remember often wondering what it was like to grow up in nazi occupied countries like germany, poland or the netherlands.

      the allies did, it wasnt the soviets nor america, but the allies. while it's true the soviets fought fiercely and faced the majority of the german forces, they simply wouldn't have been able to do so without america and britan. the same however could be said of them, without the soviets, any attempt at landing on europe would result in disaster.
      in the end, the coordination and symbiosis between the allied powers was probably the main factor in their victory over the axis.

      Google NIOD: "It is estimated that between 22,000 and 25,000 Dutchmen served in the formations of the Waffen-SS, of which between 4,000 and 6,000 were killed, killed or missing".
      Your comparison with the numbers defending The Netherlands are out of context. Either you mention how many Dutch men defended The Netherlands before it capitulated or mention how many were in the resistance and fighting in the Navy or elsewhere abroad thereafter.
      oorlogsbronnen.nl/ "300,000 Dutch soldiers must prevent a German invasion."
      NLVeterareneninstuut.nl: "In the years 1939-1945, more than 380,000 Dutch military personnel and many thousands of militarized civilians served the Kingdom." Nationaalarchief.nl: "Towards the end of the war the number of resistance fighters had increased to 45.000". So you simply are talking rubbish. No "fun fact" at all, but wild fantasy or stupid hear-say. Yes, I get very cross about such comments.
