I love the way in the taxi scene he boyfriend takes the front seat instead of sitting next to her, it’s always small things that makes how you feel about someone
To be fair, in the fictional documentary, the camera person would have to have sat in the passenger seat and probably asked Lee to sit up front so that they could film Dawn opening the gift - but this also deliberately reinforces the lack of connection between them.
@@Chris-qn6pr Yes in tv and film, the cameraman is always in the front seat. I've never seen two people in the back of a car at the same time. Dummy.
Lets forget about where the camera people are, Emma is right...Dawn is isolated in the back seat. BTW I've shot plenty of scenes with 2 in the back seat!
@@sixfoot6films I don’t think you’ve understood the point I was making. The audience is supposed to know that this is a documentary. The whole aspect of the TV crew manipulating the situation (eg agreeing to pay for Lee and Dawn’s return home) is an integral part of the plot.
@@fuckamericanidiot do you not understand that it is a fictional documentary? You completely miss the point I was making.
I know that feeling, when the only person you like leaves the party, everyone else there does not even matter and the night is bit of a blur! And Brent totally gets it at the end. Good guy deep down
88Burbank Neil was being a douche about Brents date the entire special. That being said I really do think Neil was prepared to be friendly maybe even easy going with Brent, but then Brent comes completely out of left field acting like a douche due to his insecurities. Neils respect deteriorated as a result.
88Burbank yeah, Neil did try with Brent but because Brent was so threatened by him he sort of gave up. In the end he was hoping that David wouldn’t have a date to the party and embarrass him tho
One of the greatest moments in British television comedy, right up there with the final five minutes of Blackadder Goes Forth, Delboy and Rodney becoming millionaires outside Sothebys, etc.
Agreed man. If you do some research man... it's crazy. School was actually started in the 1800s by businesses to cultivate more compliant workers. That's why when you do good you get a grade A
... like a piece of meat. And the training is about memorization and obedience versus critical thinking/problem solving/skills/ and other stuff relevant for life. Now millions of people are going to suffer as labor jobs and non executive positions get taken by robots and AI.
@@thehighburyzone311 That's quite true, actually. My first real boss had many of David Brent's characteristics, as I suspect most bosses do, the overwhelming one being that he really seemed to think we well-nigh worshipped him, but when I really think about his character, he wasn't nasty with it. A first-rate plonker, yes, but no real malice there.
It's a great ending. The way she walks in, tear stained, and finally gets her man. And they had such balls to end it when they did, right at the top.
I always think shows should end at the top, let it conclude naturally and don't keep finding ways to go on because that is when problems start. I love the US Office to bits but it should have ended way before Steve Carrell left the show - should have ended it when Dunder Mifflin went under in my opinion. That was a fitting end.
UK Office knew when it concluded.
Dawn was really focused and determined to get to Tim, which was the exact opposite throughout the series where She looked so lost and insecure.
@@seltyI agree, in the US and its audiences they have a hard time in understanding that 'less is more'.
honestly i got a bit teary eyed there. it was really perfect isnt it. and david brent for once didnt try and steal the show. also shows his growth in all this.
@@seltylmfao, ending the show as everyone gets fired... You people. Entertainment is about escapism. As bleak as the UK office ends it STILL ends with Tim and Dawn getting together. That's still escapism, because it's very rare that people are brave enough in real life to leave crappy relationships and take a chance at happiness.
So the UK office gets to end on a happy nite but you wanted the US version to end with everyone losing their jobs? No Holly for Michael? I agree it went on too long, but season 5 was not the place to end it.
I always liked David’s little look tot eh camera at the end. He is really chuffed for Tim in that moment, none of the usual jealousy or trying to steal the limelight...he is just genuinely happy for someone he considers a mate
Glad you pointed that out. I didn't notice. Fantastic directing and acting.
I've alway respected Brent's look to camera after that kiss, shows his genuine humility under his insecurities
I also get the vibe that he knew along about their "thing"
I said the same thing after seeing that scene for the first time. He's not actin' the prat. He's genuinely happy for his friend 🥲
Brent isn't a bad guy at all. He's just very insecure, lonely and lacks social skills. Finch and Neil have everything he wants, but are objectively nasty people.
My favourite thing about this scene is the knowledge that Keith is the DJ and decided to select these songs
Outstanding move.

@@rasraccoon1270 Aw - yes - brilliantly put 🙂
Lucy Davies is amazing in the entire series. I might have fallen in love with her, too.
I like how when she says “uhm not anymore” she looks back at Tim and tilts her head to the side very slightly. As to say “me and you yeah?”
Superb
I’m late to the whole conversation but yeah, bloody hell an amazing performance by Davies. The anxious energy of returning, finding tim, hesitation before crossing the room then that slight fearful smile with so much unspoken context before going in for the kiss. It’s incredibly nuanced and completely convincing.
This show was a masterpiece. It went far beyond just a comedy. It’s timeless. Gervais and Merchant’s writing was superb.
They are fecking geniuses. It's just yet another boring office, yet within that there's so much going on, touching on themes that everyone will go through, love, pain, depression, having a laugh, acceptance, boredom, banter. And it's these little things that matter the most.
@@owenchan8431yeah it's so good that it till be hard to ever get close to this. Masterpiece in every sense of the word.
Real life with those awkward moments mixed with classic Gervais comedy. Brilliant.
@@mirifiquebeauty People not giving Stephen Merchant the credit he deserves on this is a disgrace. Ricky Gervais was 40 before he made it big and didn't until he met Merchant. Hands down the best, most satisfying ending of any tv show ever.

Everything in this final scene is perfect right down to the timing of the Take That’s ‘fist of pure emotions, head of shattered dreams’ line as he shakes hands with Dawn’s fiancé, Lee and then looks to Dawn when leaving and Yazoo’s ‘all I needed was the love you gave’ when she comes back for Tim. @@donkbotiousmaximus Yeah Tim has a very brief and concealed reaction about it. He was so careful to not show his feelings. I only had a hint because I saw the US Office before and they used this.
The way Dawn looks at Tim when she stands there for that split second is heart melting. Same as when David smiles at the end. We were finally seeing David as the person he was deep down - a good guy. It’s so well acted all round in this, that you forget it’s not real.
Definitely. When their eyes lock, that little contortion her face makes is so pure
I think it is before this that David actually comes good; when he tells his supposed mate to back off when he makes fun of his new girlfriend- I loved that moment.
Damn, first time I was this I cried like a bitch. Over everything else I admire Tim's positive outlook on life. It's one of the hardest things to do to let the 'one' go.
I think he was kidding himself in saying what he was saying. He would have known damn well that Dawn going would leave a huge void in his life that would be hard to fill. I think he was giving the positive outlook he strived for, but did not genuinely believe in.
What made the scene more powerful is that in Britain, most men as soon as they hit 30 and are still single turn from optimists into pessimists. We start to expect disappointment and failure and we don't put too much stock into finding the love of our life. So when/if it finally happens the emotions are overwhelming.
@@PeaceDweller It’s experienced in the US as well. More so now in the world, I believe, due to how easy it is to show your success. Social media, for the good it does have, makes it easy to see successful people. Further making your personal achievements pale in comparison. Little side rant, but I believe it follows on the lines of the show.
Honestly this was such a good scene, I cried a little as well. As they leave the way he has a hand on her it’s almost like his scared that if he lets her go she will disappear. He finally gets the girl he loves, and he does not want to let go. 2 people that were miserable now have something to look forward to
@@dan003 Not at all! That is not Tim's journey as a character - his development in the show is to find his confidence in himself and that's the same for Dawn. They both needed to find themselves and take control of the life they felt imprisoned in the ways they could. Dawn came back, YES, but he made the choice to let her go to begin to move on with his life - THAT my friend is two beautiful examples of great writing and amazing growth that inspires audiences.
Doesn't matter if I'm in line at a crowded supermarket, whenever 'Only You' comes on I think of this beautiful scene and get chills all over.

I'm a grown man and I had a tear in my eye the first time I saw this, for a few reasons, one being that I thought how hard life can be at times and how its so rare to find that special person you actually want to be with. If you've ever lost someone you care about or pushed them away because you were immature at the time or because you had unresolved issues then this scene with Tim and Dawn brings back those feelings of what it would be like to be in love again. My dream mate
I love that David had matured enough he didn't need to interject with a joke, he was just quietly happy for them
Yeah you expect him to say a Brentism but this was so perfect
I love the expression on the face of David at 2:52. You can see he's genuinely happy for Tim and Dawn.
One of the greatest moments in TV.
I remember it well, 2003, St Stephens night, i set the record on the old VHS hoping it wouldnt malfunction while i was on a night out! I watched it the next night, dying of a hangover, and since i was already emotionally fragile because of said hangover, i cried like a baby
I completely agree Chris. I think it's the best romance seen I've ever watched on TV/film.
It absolutely is! This is right up there, with George saying "I'm...scared, sir".
To think that this is where a lot of us first got to watch the man who'd give us Watson and Bilbo. It was so cool to watch him nail the subtle emotions of Tim and then find out someone with that kind of talent would be playing some of the most famous characters ever.
Tim is a more iconic character than both.
Trash
First time I saw him was in Ali G Indahouse. Didn't watch The Office until a few years after it was released.
Hobbit may have been awful but Martin Feeeman nailed Bilbo
She as well was incredible. It's really hard to cry naturally like that and bring tears/emotion from the audience. She was so good at thinly veiled vulnerability and jadedness. Honestly both of them are incredible actors.
Best sitcom ever and best ending ever!!
I’m not going to lie, I teared up when Dawn appeared in the background... 😭
This still sticks out as one of the best finales to me. It really had us resigned to the thought of Tim and Dawn being each other’s the one who got away, but then they switched it around in the most satisfying way.
The moment she sees tims message and starts crying was such a beautiful moment
Merchant and Gervais are level one geniuses. The very best 'sit-coms' always have this level of emotion bubbling under the surface. Just like in real life. This was/is/always will be one of the best, right up there with Only Fools and Fawlty Towers.
The romance between tim and dawn was beautifully written and superbly acted the whole country cheered this kiss
The seconds before realizing that she was there are so exciting, it is as if in an instant his life changes forever.
Despite how solemn it sounds with Martins voice, Tims monologue is very insprirational to everyone who feelsl like they are stuck in a dead end life.
I'm not sure if it is meant to be totally inspirational. I think he's trying to convince himself to remain stuck in his deadend existence, when his heart knows that he just missed the biggest chance of his life. True love doesn't necessarily find you twice, or even once. Dawn saves his life at the end here.
This scene is one of if not the best endings to a show. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the American version(my favorite show of all time), but they never had a scene as good as this. Tim didn’t ask Dawn, the resistance to leaving the party, the two songs that play, Tim accepts she’s gone, the secret Santa swap, the old drawing, Dawn in the backseat by herself, the pause before the kiss, the way she takes his hand, and the good guy David smiling at the end. Best ending ever.
Every time i listen to that gorgeous song i get double emotional. The song itself has a lot of power but in this scene it's brilliant. Touches you inside
The Office UK is so absolutely amazing. David, Gareth, Tim and Dawn are just outstanding actors. Tim and Dawns scene at the end is so profound, it makes me cry buckets and wishing for something even half that special 💞
You're not alone, feeling that way. That's partly why the show also had such a genuine human relevance to it.
David casually and silently smiling at the camera at the end made me feel he was genuinely really happy for them. I thought it was a really nice touch. He can be a bit of an egomaniac at times but he’s really not a bad guy and he does care about a lot of the people who used to work under him.
No one ever remembers a couple of heroes of this storyline: The TV crew themselves break the golden rule of documentary making and get involved in the drama, offering to fly Dawn to the reunion, clearly hoping that something might happen between her and Tim (they know what is really going on more than anyone), and "Jamie", and office worker played by Jamie Deeks, who swaps his secret Santa choice with Tim, without whom Dawn would never have received the paintbox which brought her back to the party.
You never know who's looking out for you.
hard not to slip into hyperbole when describing this series. but what a beautiful and powerful moment. so moving and you feel so happy for these characters even 20 years later and having seen a dozen times.
Every piece of music played at the party is brilliantly chosen. A triumph!
Simply the greatest scene in British television. Note perfect.
For a show that was like an improvised documentary, the acting is genius. Martin Freeman feeling awkward and not being able to say what he wanted. Dawn looking like she's trapped in a shit relationship not knowing how to get out. The interview where Tim is trying to explain it like it's OK and life goes on when he's really breaking inside.
It's beyond parr. Phenomenal cast
Damn right.
This made men cry!

The UK Office feels so real and authentic, like you’re a fly on the wall in a real office with real people. The US one is goofy and cartoony in contrast.
+Cyrus Farid
It’s goofy and cartoony out of contrast.
I know, god it grates on me. It's practically slapstick, and the 'documentary-shaky-camera' feel isn't even right, it's overproduced.
I think that speaks to how Americans and Brits like their comedy.
Us Brits like self, deprecating, sarcastic and awkward comedy. Americans prefer it a little more slapstick and over the top.
I really liked the American version but the UK version just felt more real to me.
@@Fugax_8 that's not right, british comedy is about the characters, american comedy is about the situation. Just look at the u.s version of the inbetweeners. That's why they made david Brent relatable whereas michael scott is unrealistically stupid. David always came across like he was half-intelligent and not unfunny when he wanted to be but kept shooting himself in the foot in front of the characters. David Brent felt like a real guy. Thats why the u.s show played up Jim's pranks so much to the point that dwight comes off stupid for not clocking them while tim pranking gareth always felt very real and believable. The Office was utter genius from beginning to end.
It really was. And it started the whole mockumentary format; after the show won at the Golden Globes in 2004 and was critically acclaimed in the US (even if US audiences didnt quite get it) the amount of sitcoms that chose to go that route; no studio audience, no laughtrack, talking to camera format, it all started with the UK office.
What gets me about this is at the end David Brent smiles after they kiss. It's this genuine happiness for Tim and an understanding of that connection. Despite that David is a wally he has a heart of gold. I don't think the character would work if he was a arsehole. It's such an amazing comedy if not one of the best ever written!
The thing that makes this so powerful is that it’s one of the very few *believable* nice guy gets the girl scenarios. ❤️
It also helps that Tim is a genuinely nice guy, not a "nice guy".
@@philiphunn194 I loved how he pushed for Gareth to have the manager job, Jim would never did something close to that.

It is hard, I can also relate... but I actually had to go to another country for a year and when I came back, she went for a year abroad too... and I learned she was with another bloke from work whom I knew. It was hard to get over that, it kinda wasn't this situation like with Dawn and Tim, I am pretty sure she did not have any bigger feelings towards me but I suck at getting over these things, I rarely meet somebody I can fall for and it takes a lot of time to get over it.
