I'm a simple guy, I see Roger Deakins and I click.
I bet Deakins would be surprised to know he is a poster boy for Smallrig
Aye aye fella
Lol amen
Cut my teeth learning to pull focus directly on the lens, then moving on from there. It taught me the important lesson of treating the lens as an extension of yourself. Once you do, your moves become more consistently confident. So many people miss this when they’re first starting out!
Please make a video on how to actually pull focus. How to know when you've nailed perfect focus and things like that. I know there are different ways for different systems but still, it would be very helpful so we'll know what to expect when we get to manually pull focus.
Please do it!!!
I'm an AC, this video explains it really well. Watch it again.
They kind of did, you can measure distance. To help you can leave tape on the ground and mark the follow focus to match so you know where the focus point is based off where your actor is standing.
@@StephenHerron i still dont get it, what about being 4 feet from a subject? Do you enter that distance somewhere in the camera?
@@BambooScar the distance markings are on the lens.
I've been following this channel for 10 years. Still, and will forever be, my favorite channel ever! You guys have BEEN rocking it
Thank you!
Smallrig made Ryan forget that his camera has internal ND's.
Ahhh hahaha true 😂😂😂
No, he just wants that sweet sponsor money
It's honestly incredible how much focus influences a shot, more than cameras!
Absolutely love those comments with Josh. I actually don't have a clue about filmmaking although I like it but it's those things that inspire me.
That and when you were honestly encouraging people to share in times of need
This makes me appreciate Sony FX6 even more, autofocus and auto ND in one cinema package, whenever run and gun is needed.
how does autofocus help when you need to do a manual focus?
Love the focus puns! You really know how to bring attention to a subject. 😃😃😂😂
This video is the first that really explained depth of field, thank you so much
Very cool you guys! I think what sells me the most on the small rig puller is the metal adjustable stops for pulling two distances. What an easy way to do it - especially when you the alternative is usually a sharpie.
This is the first thing I watched on my new computer monitor, a 43" LG 4K TV! Episode looked great.
Ooo small rig has a follow focus now :o and I love that it doesnt need a rail system. That's always been what held me back from using one
One of the best product promo/tutorial videos y’all have done. Ordering both items today!
This is exactly why film riot is a beast in the filmmaking teaching game!!
You learn more from these guys than you do in School tbh 💯 thank you guys
This video answered more questions than I watched it for. Thanks🥂
I agree, Focus is the one thing you can't get wrong. Also you can't lose focus on life too, so this is like a multifaceted lesson
Always a good time with you guys. Love this channel.
I just bought the Smallrig MagicFIZ Wireless Autofocus a couple of weeks ago. Worth it! If anyone is considering a compact wireless follow focus system, I highly recommend.
Very useful information again. God blesses you and have a great future.
Roger deakins is absolutely one of a kind cinematographer
Everything I have for my camera is SmallRig 😀😀😀
Most excellent explanation......well said!
A few seconds in and I'm already learning.
I think i want to get the SmallRig. Was thinking of getting it, and your video came at the right time.
Great video guys!
master in the house baby :)
The decor! The lighting!
This video was super helpful and fun. Thanks for sharing.
super duper cool and important video!
I am one to request to close down to get a little more wiggle room especially on tighter lenses. The bokeh difference doesn't break the feel if you go up 2 stops on 85mm or higher shots. The dp's I've worked with would refuse to drop down from t1.8 when we are outside with plenty of light and plenty of iso to play with..
This video will come in very handy for me
Now that you guys are pimpin that BMPCC 6k, would be nice to see how you use your luts with braw.
Ryan, you are looking good!
Ryan that skeleton pocket watch.... I need it
The videos looks like a MasterClass Class 👍 top quality
Should one get a manual lens for this, since so many modern lenses are focus by wire?
Thanks for the pvz video y’all made years back I loved it when I was a kid
This content is just so amazing. Been watching film riot for over 10 years…still the best
Hey can you make some water and fire bending effect tutorial pls😁😁😁😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊🎈🎈🎈
Love that you’re still rockin them rokinons!
Gotta love the focus jokes
I hear "I actually liked pulling this way" with no boom-chicka-bow-wow or even a sideways glance... am I even watching Film Riot?
"It was weird "🤣
Wow, you guys sure have some cool equipment. I appreciate you showing us stuff like this cause someday i might have to rent one and I wont be so alien to it
Huh, I haven't pulled focus from under the lens before. I will have to try it sometime and see if it's more comfortable.
1st Love that Roger Deakins was the thumbnail the GOAT Of Cinematography and then as freelance DOP I have found it so crucial to have a focus puller you can trust because as you say its literally so important otherwise most of the time its unusable footage
Did you guys ever go into the science behind why aperture affects depth of field? Would love to see that
I appreciated your focus joke Ryan
This was a great video! Now to add that matte box to my Amazon Cart
An awesome video Ryan!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Pls tell us when the next short filming opportunity will commence
Missed you guys
I just got that follow focus and I’m loving it🤙
That tape measure is so cool lol
Always drop everything to see these videos, thanks for the great information!
Currently have a low budget starting out as a filmmaker, is there a way to master focus on a moving object without a follow focus, maybe make a DIY follow focus? Or is it just something I'd have to save up for in the future? I'd be grateful to know if it's possible.
Great video as always guys! 👌
Try using this follow focus with the Tamron 18-300 to adjust the zoom. In this zoom lens it works so hard that no follow focus can do it. :-)
Hey, thanks for the video. Since you've used a black magic 6k pro; is that cam good in low light conditions?
And is there a camera lens that you recommend for low light scenarios? Thanks.
I have a question, what if I wanted to do both focus and iris at the same time?
I have a dslr, I wonder if I should get a follow focus now or wait until I get a much more professional camera?
What's really amazing is that Film Riot still hasn't learned to balance the music with the dialog. That music at 07:19 is way too loud as opposed to the dialog. Anyone listening through headphones got their ears blasted.
Sounds fine and I'm listening on senhieser hd600's. it's a bit on the loud side but nothing to bad.
Agreed, anytime you have to adjust volume while watching the same video, the creator messed up leveling the audio. It's flashback to broadcast tv, where commercials would be way too loud than the programming. ✌
If you watched Oppenheimer, you'll see that completely missing focus multiple times can be in a big movie
This is great and so helpful!
ME: Man I can't seem to focus.
RANDOM STRANGER: (Pulls focus on my eyes)
ME: Oh thank you.
I almost dismissed this video thinking it was a video essay 😂
Woke up this morning
The new F60 just came out. I got it but I think Smallrig kind of messed up on the design. How is the resistance on this model?
Can we put the Small Rig Matte Box Mini on 55 mm thread lenses?
You guys have so much great knowledge! Thank you so much for sharing it
Sooo helpful, love the rig !
great vid.. as always.... thanks
Best channel
As a great fan of your channel, I'm sorry to say that I learned nothing except on "new smallrig products".
This video sleeps on really BASIC concepts to become a giant advertising in disguise. Felt like old-school tele-shopping.
Very informative. Thanks!
Love the episode!
Would the follow focus A B stops work with a focus by wire lens?
No, doesn't work, the actual focal distance does not correspond to the focus ring's position
9:57 THIS is why it's so great having Justin back lolol
What do you use for wireless focus?
Prisoners, No Country for Old Men and Blade Runner 2049 are Deakins at his best!
Jesse James is his best.
Ya, it was a beautiful movie, but it isn't one of my favs. Just based on cinematography I would say it is definitely up there as his best, but if we are judging them based as movies, I didn't love it.
@@DiLeggeBrothers You're young, you'll figure it out eventually.. maybe.
Another factor that affects the depth of field is the size of the sensor: the larger the sensor / format -> the smaller the DOF.
Title had to be: Click the link in the description. Also that thumbnail lol
Thank you
I always had a hard time trying to get perfect focus since I only have use of the screen of my canon 80d. I appreciate the knowledge definitely gonna use
I just ordered this follow focus today after watching your video. I was thinking of getting one for (don't throw rocks at me) for my zoom lens (for the actual zoom).
Got a nice little discount and am looking forward to it. Had my a7S III in my hand with my rig for like 30 minutes visualizing how this could be helpful and where it can fit.
Because I shoot mainly run and gun, and because the focus on the a7S III is great, mounting it on the left, next to my handle practically brings a wheel next to my left hand, while my right hand is ready to modify any controls that are next to the grip or tap the screen for a track focus.
Still thinking if I should mount it to the cage or to my mini-rig that has 2 rods and handles. Lego is fun :) I'll test it once it arrives.
Those jokes weren't thaaaat bad I actually chuckled haha
I still feel much of Army of the Dead extreme shallow depth of field was done in post. It didnt look like it was just from the lens to me.
Great video
Why do I always have to buy anything you guys tell us to buy..this is the sole reason i'll never be able to afford a home, it's okay, love you Ryan, bye-bye ❤
This is a channel where I just hit "Like" before I actually start watching. I saw that follow focus and I'm getting it. I rigged up my 6K pro with @smallrig as well and I'm very happy. How does that rockinon perform? are you happy with it? have you tried the Meike S35 35mm T2.1 yet??? Any thoughts??? Thanks for all the tips as always. Oh, love that background!
Hardly any useful info about pulling focus. This is just a plug for Smallrig, which BTW, I love as well.
Thank you Film Riot
I listened to your advice about filming children, I'm now being investigated by the FBI and found myself in prison :(
Bloody useful, thanks!
There is one matte box that comes with a light. Is that good?
Film riot is my film school 😍
I saw in this video that you use the BMPCC6k. I am torn between whether I should get the a7siii or the BMPCC6k. I am a solo student filmmaker and have saved up enough for either, however I am very unsure which one to get. If anyone with experience on these cameras give me their opinion, I would be very grateful.
Do you need a cage for this?
Tilta Mini follow focus vs smallrig Mini follow focus?
What lenses do you guys typically use with your BMPCC 6K?
